?

Do you feel Watford disrespected the cup and shortchanged the fans who travelled.

I really hope we pick the best team we can, sitting 7th in the league I think we can give the cup a good go this season.

  5. From the Guardian preview of weekend's cup ties:
    7) Newcastle to get stung by Hornets?
It might look like Newcastle have had Watford’s number this season – they beat Javi Gracia’s team at St James’ Park in November and then held them to a draw at Vicarage Road the following month – but a key feature of each of those games was Watford’s wastefulness. Gerard Deulofeu was the main culprit, repeatedly goofing in front of goal in both matches. If he plays on Saturday, he can expect to get opportunities to atone because Watford are the better team, much happier and far more likely than Newcastle to win a trophy in the foreseeable future, facts that are always worth mentioning to anyone who whines about the nefarious influence of foreign owners in English football. Tough game to call this, if they put out their reserves and we go full strength we may win depending if we have our shooting boots on.

Not sure why people are speculating about the strength of our team. Javi has already pretty much admitted it'll be the stiffs again.

Im concerned the Burnley game marks the beginning of a drop in form. We look thread bare in defence. We have lost the steal we had at the back in early games affording the opposition chances. Midfield without Doucs looked small and easily bullied.
The skilful latins upfront will have a few chances but its just that chances. Hopefully the coach can play a blinder and get it right and that Burnley was just a blip driven by being forced to play at their level.

We have a good first team, if the circumstances are right we can beat anyone save City and pool. The squad less so.

if we can nick a couple early doors it may be our day, I doubt Newcastle will put all into a fight to come back and our confidence should rise.

We have a good first team and in this league a good first team keeps you out of the bottom 3. If the circumstances are wrong we can lose to anyone save Huddersfield and Cardiff.

Could mean change 5 or change 11 though. I hope it’s the former otherwise it will be the usual 6 games in 8 weeks in Feb/Mar. Anymore than that and the poor players would get tired in any case I guess.

Oh yeah forgot about him! Think he needs to play every u23 game until he bosses the midfield, gets his confidence back, gets stuck into some 50/50’s etc - worst case come back for next season after full pre-season and fill the hole left after Doucs has farked off

  17. Gomes has a dodgy back on the goal keeping video, might Dahlberg play?

  18. Merson win Lawro lose. Same as Burnleh. Back to VR then.

I see no reason whatsoever to play Gomes over Foster. One area where rotation just weakens our chances and only serves sentimental value.

Cathcart back for this game so Prodl the only CB missing I think.

Foster for Gomes. Capoue for Wilmot. Gray for Success. For me that would be the right blend of first teamers and reserves.

Why not play our best eleven, Newcastle are no push overs especially at St James Park, and it would be nice to actually try and win the FA Cup, wouldn't it?

  23. Doucoure for Wilmott. I'd like to see Capoue as fresh as poss for tottingham.

7th in the FA cup isn't worth much.
Best to win the cup as we'll be going down next year anyway so at least we'd have the memories.

I wouldn’t put it past them to have a round of 5th to 8th matches. Ideal for padding out that blank week before the play off finals or ideally in July.

Win that and there are only 8 more rounds to go before you are through to the UEFA cup 1st qualifying round !

    Alright lads?

Newcastle have never got past the 4th round under Ashley and I'd be staggered if we manage to break that curse this season. We're dog **** and you're fundamentally not. Your reserves would likely beat our first team to be honest. We're missing a stack of players through injury or whatever, but Benitez won't be playing a full strength team anyway. Unless of course he plans to play the 2nd string against Man City.

I'd be surprised if we made big changes from the side that faced Blackburn. So, Woodman, Sterry, Roberts and Joselu instead of Dubravka, Yedlin, Diame and Rondon.

Off the pitch Ashley remains a shitshow of an owner, refusing to properly strengthen in the window. Which will likely mean that Benitez will be off at the end of the season. God help Mark Hughes when he tries to get this pack of likeable but limited players to safety next season.

Anybody needing pub advice, let me know.

Because Newcastle are also going to put out a lot of their reserves (as corroborated by the poster above me). I'd rather we went for our best ever PL finish than winning the Cup.

The FA cup without question. I've been going to the Vic since 1972 and have had no end of cup disappointments and would give anything to see my team lift the FA cup. As a kid it was (and still is in my simple eyes) the ultimate prize in football.

Finishing 7th or 10th makes very little difference to me. All it allows us to say to our mates who support teams that finish below us to say is "Waheyy we finished above you... For once..." when in reality, they've probably finished in higher positions several times. Historically, it looks okay that we've finished in the top 10 but does it really make any difference to us as a club? Burnley finished 7th last season, no one really cares that much considering they've been appalling ever since and it has been simply seen as a one off good season for them.

Reaching the final of the FA Cup or 'touch wood' winning it would be something to remember for the rest of our days as Watford fans.

Currently, the only thing we can boast about as fans of this club are that we finished 2nd to Liverpool once in the top flight and lost out to Everton in the finals of the FA Cup... Those are our two biggest achievements. A bit underwhelming if you ask me. Especially if you take into consideration that both these events happened over 30 years ago.

I know what option i'd take as a fan of a club that has one precisely nothing when it comes down to cups!

The FA Cup is worth more because it guarantees European qualification (at the group stage, so avoiding the Europa League playoffs) AND a cup AND a chance to win the Community Shield in the coming season.

7th in the league gets you either nothing or into the Europa league qualifiers, plus some additional prize money for league position.

It's not really much of a contest, to be honest.

This is mad. What is the point of football if not to win a trophy? If we won the Cup, it would be the greatest moment in our history and something we would remember for years to come. Who's going to sit around in five years time and warmly reminisce about that time we finished 7th?
