A couple of weeks ago I had a long chat with a good friend (I was best man at a couple of his many weddings) who is a retired detective chief inspector with Herts plod. I was moaning about the general poor quality of the police (based entirely on the fact that most of them look so scruffy and unfit). It clearly touched a nerve because it prompted him to go on a long rant about the men and women "that can barely hold a pen or tie their own shoe laces" that now make up our police service. Apparently, the vetting process for new recruits is far less rigorous than it once was (no home visits and face-to-face interviews not required!) because they're under pressure to make up the numbers of new coppers promised by Bo Jo.
Would anybody really be surprised if Lancashire Constabulary's finest simply failed to spot the body as it lay in the stream?

Maybe, but the family hired SGI themselves, a specialist in that particular field, so the fact they didn’t find her and then declared she wasn’t in the river is fairly odd.

SGI bloke was on LBC this morning saying he's not going to take the fall for this, and that his super-sonar thingy only searches the river-bed, not the reeds. Maybe he needs to buy a reed-thingy.

Oh there's certainly been a big drop in quality coming in. Loads of reasons for that - some you'd recognise from the general world of work, others more police-specific driven by stupid politicians. But on the point of this search specifically, the diving unit is a specialist unit that's usually dead man's shoes. If you look at them wheeling up to the scene most of the time they're older chaps. Doubt they're as affected by the recruitment issues of the here and now.

Guess it was a case of "reed it and weep" for him this morning in more ways than one.

This I don't quite get, a human body is pretty big compared to a lot of things that may get caught up in reeds and when they first started looking her body must only recently got there.

This is a very sad situation and my thoughts go out to the family and friends of Nicola, and her, if she did choose to take her own life.

There's definitely something that doesn't sit right with me about it all though. I don't personally wish to speculate but it seems like there may be more than meets the eye.

As I believe @UEA_Hornet said, things like this show the very worst of humanity.

Truely heart breaking for all close to her. It was going to end up this way more so than positive. I did not follow this as closely as some of you but at least the family have closure and as small as that feels right now, it means the worry and doubt can pass. Whether this was just a tragic accident or something more sinister is obviously going to take a bit of time. Warmest regards to all who knew her x.
