I find this hard to believe, but if someone finds video of it, then I'm happy to be convinced. It just doesn't make sense for him to hate the English, considering his fecking girlfriend is English. Henman even came out after the "anyone but England" comment (which was in itself taken out of context) and said there was no way he was an Anglophobe and it was all nonsense.

If we play them, then I want us to win, but other than that I wish them as well as I would any other team. In fact I'd rather they win than a foreign team

After he beat Youhzny he said he hated the English, wanted to see London burned and was glad that the only good thing that England ever produced was his girlfriend's mimsy. He makes her keep silent during sex and wear a ginger wig, otherwise he can't come.

I think he's a nice bloke, he certainly comes across well in more everyday situations than he does on and around the court. No-one that knows him seems to have anything negative to say about him.

The Scottish/English thing was just a bit of banter he was having with another tennis player who was giving Murray stick about the Scottish team being c**p compared with England. The newspaper reporter just took the bit he wanted and ignored the rest - and people like you form an opinion on it.

I really like Andy Murray. And I actually like Scotland, Scottish people, plenty of Scottish sportspeople, etc. as hard as that may be for Nath to believe.

I mainly like Andy Murray because he seems a bit more normal than a lot of elite sportspeople - seemingly a big part of the reason a lot of people don't like him.

Despite the fact I quite clearly pointed out his comments about England have absolutely nothing to do with my dislike of him.

Don't mention it when talking about why you don't like him then

Apologies, I was misappropriating comments from someone else. I think that zz had quoted you for his first paragraph, and was addressing the thread for the second. Though I obviously wouldn't want to speak for someone else's comments.

    Friday..

Will be a tough game and I guess a worry might be how much this match took out of him particularly given the others had straight sets wins.

If you are being pedantic, I actually said 'people like you' meaning those that don't to be associated with Scotland in the same way as others do.

Seriously, I saw a program on him about a year ago and then a recent documentary, and he just does seem like a decent and pretty funny guy.

But on the tennis court, I'll agree with you, he's a miserable git!

I have nothing against Scotland, the Irelands or Wales.

I still consider myself English rather than British, though, and I don't think there is anything wrong with that. Britain is nothing more than a political animal; Scottish, Welsh, Irish and English culture are all distinct in their own way, and I think that's something to be celebrated.

    Also, f*** haggis.

Always find it weird when people say they're English and not British. It was the English who invented the term, and indeed for hundreds of years the two words were synonyms for each other, with people in what is now modern England more commonly referring to themselves in terms of what house they hailed from. If you go back a long way an Englishman could refer to someone from Wales or Scotland. It's a stupid modern practice to suddenly deny being a part of the union in favour of some faux nationalism.

To get back on topic, I think this is Murray's year. Providing he doesn't end up in another 5 setter in the semis, I think he'll go on to beat Djokovic in the final.

So England isn't its own individual nation, no? You could also argue that it's weird to call yourself British instead of European then. Shall we just abolish all English individualism?

I was merely pointing out that the notion of "England" does not have the historical connotations that many people assume it does.

I don't have a problem with people saying they're English, I just think it's weird when people say they're English and not British. To use your own analogy it's like saying you're British but not European. It just doesn't make sense.

Now can we please get back to Murray?

The day a Scotsman says he's a Brit will be a long time coming.

Besides it's only banter ... mostly and Bannockburn was an awful long time ago.
In reality there's not a bad word I can say against them and from experience that's mutual for the ones that actually venture south of Hadrian's wall.

Well done Murray on beating Spain's number 9 :)
To Be honest thought Verdasco was going to win that one, but the amount of unforced errors he had were unbelievable.
Semi-final should be interesting against the mahussive nearly as big as leicester Polish bloke.

There are people in Yorkshire who don't feel they have anything in common with the rest of England as they are proud to be from Yorkshire and nothing else. Same with Cornwall and other counties with their own strong individual identities. Perhaps we should go back to the Saxon kingdoms and only support people from Middlesex?

With the roof being closed does that make Murray the first Scot to ever complain about a lock-in?

    Not that I'm stereotyping. Much.

Not wanting to get too embroiled in a political debate on a football thread, can I just say that the term British existed before English did or before the concept of 'England' ever existed. HecticFreeze I echo your sentiments, but in a slightly different way.

To expand, the original inhabitants of this land were a sub culture of the Celts that moved into Northern Europe about 10,000 years ago. These British people inhabited all of isles associated with Great Britain and parts of northern France (hence the Breton (aka British) peoples in northern France).

2000 years ago the Romans invaded, and then 1500 years ago the Angles and Saxons invaded from Northern Germany and Denmark. Angles is where we derive 'Anglo-Saxon' and hence English from.

Then in 1066 we were invaded by the Normans from Northern France (who were actually Vikings recently inhabiting stolen land from the Franks just a generation before).

From then until post war period the population influx remained stable, however after WW2 the UK saw possibly the greatest and most varied migration of people the world has ever seen in such a short span of time. This has led to UK and especially London becoming the biggest mixing pot in the world, where the term of what it is to be 'English' is an ever changing, evolving thing.

My point is who gives a **** who is British, Scottish, Welsh etc bla bla bla, its all irrelevant. We re just a very condensed group of people living on a small outcrop of rock in the middle of the Atlantic/North Sea. Lets enjoy our differences and then celebrate our difference because if we were all the same it would be a ****ing boring world to live in.

So yeah, come on Murray, you English *******, unless he loses then obvioulsy he s Scottish

Not a huge fan of Murray. He's played well here today though, I also think Janowicz is going to have a good future in the game.

Cracking performance in those last two sets. Just not sure that he can beat djokovic on Sunday though.

Murray was incredible. Janowicz looked very impressive to start with but he'll have to do what Murray did and learn how to play these big games against top opponents. I do see Janowicz being a force in the game in the future, but he needs to be less of a ****.

His personality and attitude is probably half of what will take him far to be honest, I've watched him before and he literally doesn't care if he's playing against the #1 or #250, he thinks he can beat anyone. Not a bad competitive attitude to have so long as you become technically enough to back it up.

  34. wfcmoog

    wfcmoog Tinpot

He may think he can beat the #1 but he can't and he won't until he learns to manage his attitude and temper.

  35. Prentice

His attitude and temper were fine really, other than swinging his racket at the net, it was him mentally losing the game once he'd lost that lead in the third set, if he kept on top of it then he probably would have gone on to win it 3-1.

He has a bit of Goran Ivanisevic about him.
