Hanging up his boots at the end of the season although some might say that he's been doing that since leaving Newcastle!

Great striker at Liverpool and for England - would have done even better but for injuries.

Possibly the most injury prone player I have ever seen. Actually wait... Ledley King?

I was sure he would break the England goals scored record. Shame.

The last player that made me excited to watch England play. Will always remember his Argentina goal and the Germany hat trick. RIP.

Fondly remembered by all Toon and Stoke fans. ;)

His goalscoring record is impressive but would he break into the top class of England strikers ? People like Greaves for example or Lineker or Woodcock all strikers with different modus operandi. Greaves for instance was sucessful abroad albeit for a very brief spell with AC Milan but was homesick and was also sucessful as a whole in Europe.

Once his pace vanished and injuries hampered him he lacked the footballing intelligence to adapt and also the pace had vanished which used to get him beyond defences and away from defenders. Poor management on both sides from Liverpool and England in terms of working on those hamstrings.
