Could it prove to be a big mistake by Boothroyd to turn down the money offered by Fulham for King ? Lets face it he has now scored only twice in the last 12 games , and the money could have been used to "Freshen Up " the squad and bring 2 or 3 in ! When you look at King`s career stats , where is the justification in asking for 6,7 or £8 million pounds for a journeyman especially when Reading and Blackburn want considerably less for Lita and Roberts ! Anyways looks like Fulham have declined Watfords kind offer to increase their bid and have moved on , I just wonder whether this was a game of brinksmanship that has gone horribly wrong for Boothroyd and Watford FC , its not like any other Club has been fighting Fulham for him , is it
No, he was right not to sell. 4m? we paid that for Ellington, and he is not fit to tie marlons shoe laces at the moment, plus, after Forest take their cut, what does that leave us with? a gaping hole up front.
I think it's generally agreed that we don't want Marlon to go and he is worth more than £4 million. I'll be glad when we get to the end of the window and some other posts can be started.
Would he get it..? Blimey no wonder Aidy and the board are losing the plot/ideas because now people are asking for King to leave!
a good post...however we cannot keep saying "if we paid 4 million for ellington then..." we paid well over the top for ellington , im sure you would all agree...west brom are still falling over themselves with laughter so to compare players value up against the money spent on ellington is wrong
Not really. we are still in an over inflated transfer market, and as such you aways look at other transfers to justify a price. The key here is, that we had to pay c 4m for a player (who at the time we belived to be prem standard) and as such would expect to have to pay the same again if we wanted a replacemnet. What we don't know is whether the replacement will be another lemon like Ellington, or a diamond like King? either way, in order to take that gamble, we will need 7-8m (more if its available) for King.
stas? 100 goals in just over 200 games roughly is a great record. we cant just buy new players though, squad needs to setttle
Better than some of the 1st posts on here. Although you did forget to brung the biscuits with you. If I was you I'd bookmark this page so that you can come and say I told you so when we miss out on promotion and he leaves on a free transfer at the end of next season
Fulham have now upped their bid to a staggering £5 million for "Burger", and you wont find one single post on any Fulham website where King is wanted at any price , If I was Boothroyd I would bite Fulhams hand off for that ! 2 goals in the last 12 Championship games is a shocking run of form
Not really, as I don't think we can be sure of buying a striker of King's quality, who will score goals and offer what he does, for £4m. Ellinglump is an example, but also a warning that we would be taking a gamble that whoever we brought in to replace would be as good. Under those conditions it makes no sense whatsoever to sell for anything under 8m.
But whose going to pay over 8 million for a player who has scored 2 goals in his last 12 championship games and unproven in the premiership..
The transfer system makes no sense..Ellinghton £4.2 mill with add on"s NO GOALS King 11 goals and a regular scorer £5mill....
Fact is, there will be at least 10 clubs waiting for him in the Summer to try and whip him off our hands. He loses absolutely nothing staying here now except 6 months at a higher wage rate, and has a huge amount to gain. It would be an unbelievable loss for Watford for him to go, as we could not get anyone near his quality in, and you are kidding yourself if you think the funds can be used to pay for anyone who is above Wigan standard. Premiership players do not play for Championship clubs.
That 9Mill was for someone who quite clearly had a ton of potential ability and was already playing for England U21s. No point in even suggesting we compare them.
agreed, a player is worth what clubs are willing to buy them for, and no club in their right minds would pay 8 mil for King.
I disagree - a player's worth can differ from club to club. I still believe that King is better than anyone else we can attract. Therefore, he's worth much more that an estimated selling price to us. Money is fine but as we saw with Collins John - a player of a certain calibre (not saying John is that) would pass on the opportunity.
Err, if there is no interest at that price, don't sell him. Simple really. Don't sell at a price which doesn't at least allow you to guarantee to replace him adequately. We sold Bouzza for 3.5 and have nowhere near replaced him, having spent a large chunk of that already.
