Ironic that Maurice Cook should have died the day before the two teams with whom he spent most of his career met. I knew him reasonably well. A larger than life figure. Great crowd favourite at the Vic. Could run the whole 90 minutes despite not being over enthusiastic about training nor a great believer in a healthy lifestyle. Was very good natured and great sense of humour. Very hostile reaction from the fans when he was sold to Fulham for 15,000 pounds. (he was on 30 pounds per week at the time of his transfer) The hostility only evaporated when Cliff Holton was signed later. A different breed to today's players. He will be missed.
Hi Ron, thanks for posting that. RIP Maurice Cook. It's sad there's nothing on the official site about him.
Welcome to the boards Ron. I do not presonally recollect Maurice Cook, as i am a younger fan, however RIP to him , and condolences to his family.
Yes, good to see that it was. I think it was appropriate that he was remembered before the Fulham vs Watford match.
Thanks for the memories...Maurice, you were a real old fashioned English Centre Forward, in the days when players earned petty cash.
Strange occurrence here - I took a friend who has watched local football for 70 odd years, and as we were sitting down for the game, he started going on about this bloke who had played for Berko, then gone on to Watford , then play alongside the likes of johnny Haynes and Jimmy Hill at flam... he had hust remembered his name and asked rhetorically what had happened to him when they announced the minutes silence....spooky.
