    Adrian Mariappa.

If we can get the rest of the squad to approach every game like you do, we'll be fine.

    I salute you.

First instinct was to make a snarky comment about filling the team with Championship standard players who 'try their best', but to be honest, look at Sheff Utd, we could do a lot worse...

Marriapa was excellent today. He also had a spell last year when he was excellent for about 5 games. Unfortunately more often than not he is slightly substandard. Great squad player but the fact he has started so many games the last 3 seasons shows our poor conditioning and dreadful defensive recruitment.

He does stay fit and free from suspension - I suspect that is why he is considered a key part of the squad.

    And can fill 2 positions..

Not even the oldest defender we have which maybe says something about the transfer policy/squad development.

Hero? We are bottom of the table. The squad contains no heroes at this moment in time.

None taken. But if a few more players had the fire in their bellies and the desire in their eyes that he has on the pitch, we'd achieve safety without a shadow of a doubt.

I don't think anybody can ever knock his effort and there are a few that could up their game certainly but the fact he is still playing says a lot about our recruitment back there

I have said many times on here that Mariappa is not good enough for the Premier league. I have also said that he comes across as a really good guy.
Ok, he has played well a few times. Even a broken watch is right twice a day.
He does try hard, but he is of limited ability.
The fact that he is in the starting 11 just shows how poor we are.
The recruitment has been atrocious. Get rid of some of the backroom blazer wearing staff asap.
He is just not good enough, but he is not the only one in this current squad.

Is he good enough to play a significant part in getting us to 4th from bottom this season? I believe he is.
Is his attitude to every game he plays in exactly what we need at the moment? I believe it is.

I've no argument at all with the points you make, although I've not met many folk who wear a broken watch...

My original post was about acknowledging the positives we have of Mariappa pulling on the shirt, how can I put it, in this moment.

I accept that he tries hard, can't fault his effort. Maybe with better players around him, he could hide a bit each game. You know that is just not possible with our defence.
I said in the Summer that we would struggle big time. First rate complacency and poor preparation. We stood still with an old squad and failed to correct the massive alarm bells from the end of the previous season.
I like Mariappa, l have met him off the pitch. Though as a Premier league player he is out of his depth. Then again, some of our other players could do well to follow his example of effort.

Oh yes I agree the age of our squad is an issue and a general sign of lack of investment.

Don't really see the point of this whole thread. Poor player who exemplifies the state of our recruitment by the very fact he is still in the first team picture, tries hard in a game, which we still lose, and someone sees that to be something worth pointing out.

Meanwhile we're still bottom and Mariappa has very much been part of some of our worst performances over the past year. So what?

He might be crap but fair f*cks for holding his own out of position against Liverpool.

I like him at right back. I think the team is better with bigger defenders at full back as Cathcart and Kabasele are not huge. He won't offer much going forward, but that's not the most important job for a full back.

We got lucky today and I'll take that. We huffed and puffed and got a point. Would take a point away any day. Massive game against Villa but we need a massive improvement on today. We sorely lacked Doucs in the middle and hopefully Sarr will be back for Saturday. Put in two magnificent crosses first half but no one on the end as usual.

Sorry, but if people are going to highlight the 2 isolated games where Mapps isn't terrible, it's understandable that people will point out the 2 dozen other games where he's utter bobbins.
