"Social Media are suggesting Walsall are chasing Watford stalwart Lloyd Doyley. Doyley is predominantly a right back but can also play at centre back. Doyley who is nickname Lloydinho by Watford fans, has played over four hundred games for the Hornets but is free to talk to clubs this summer. In 2012, the Jamaican Football Federation were tracking Doyley's progress, and in March 2013, Doyley received his first call up to the Jamaican national team and went on to play nine times for the Reggae Boyz." Who are 'Social Media'?
People mocking Lloyds one on one defensive abilities obviously have not been going to watch games for long and are jumping on the bandwagon. 1 on 1 he was as good as anyone(across all divisions). We all know his distribution was not very good but difficult to question his 1 on 1 ability. Not sure i can remember many instances when he was found wanting against anyone. Short memories or not been watching for too long
Define this mystical 'one on one' attribute for me then. I have honestly never heard it mentioned quite so much as it is about Doyley by his apologists. It's always his strongest attribute. Ok. Then it's usually said to be up there with the best the game has to offer or words to that effect. And that's where you disconnect from reality. Face it, if it was actually as important as you make out he'd have moved on long ago. Anyway, I only really popped up to reply to/laugh at the assertion that he could frustrate Messi. I think of all the big teams that have played Barca in the last decade, imagine all the fans on their forums saying the same about a specific player at their club and only afterwards realising the futility of their words.
TIL Lloyd Doyley is a better one-on-one defender than Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels and Sergio Ramos
Has Messi ever scored a goal while Lloyd Doyley has been on the same pitch as him? I think there's your answer.
He's also scored more goals than legend Peter Shilton (Just) therefore Doyley is better than Shilton.
Apologists!? Give me a break. Why does a man who played over 400 times in the top 2 tiers of English football need an apologist? Lloyd has the worst footballing technique I've ever seen in professional football. And in spite of this was able to contribute meaningfully in the eyes of countless Watford managers. This suggests his other attributes are/were excellent. Baffles me that some people STILL don't understand this.
I have never understood this "best one on one defender" title people give Lloyd. He backs off so much he's basically running alongside them, then by the time he decides to actually stick his foot in the opposition are already in our box and are able to get a shot off.
....which he usually blocks. I'm fine with someone backing off if they time an interception right rather than give away a foul. So many goals are conceded when a defender times a tackle wrong and gets skinned.
But you weren't talking about Lloyd over the years in your original comment. You were talking about current day Lloyd. Who doesn't get picked. Even for the bench. Or Jamaica.
And he hasn't played for so long because he's not very good anymore. Didn't even stand out for the u21s.
Not in comparison to the other players at our disposal I agree. Reckon he could still do a job at the mid-low championship range.
Lloyd Doyley has won the same amount of League titles as the much-loved-around-here Steven Gerrard. Give the man some respect FFS.
Messi would pi55 all over him. Youre talking about a player that can't get in our side against one of the best players there has ever been. The Lloyd love in getting silly again
Been watching a long time and have always agreed his one on one play was very good but as somebody else noted it has been predominantly in The Championship. This thread got silly when it was mentioned that anybody would struggle against him although Messi just might be ok. Think he might have played at a bigger club if that was the case and certainly for longer in the Premier League
Was a fantastic servant to the club. I wish him all the best for the future, but I don't think he quite has the ability to carry on in the Premier League. In his prime, not a lot got past him, but unfortunately his prime ended a few years back.
I don't want him to leave because if he does, every time we concede a goal next season somebody, quite seriously, will say, wouldn't have happened in Lloyds day!!! Been at the club through thick and thin, mostly thin to be honest and anybody who plays that many games deserves some respect but lets not get carried away. If somebody tried to go round the outside of him very few succeeded to his credit but his positioning was always a little suspect and his actual football ability was non existent. His lack of positional sense and reading of the game makes me wonder if he can be a coach that many think is the natural step for him but time will tell. His time here is now probably done though. He was basically not involved for the last half of the season and with us now being a division higher it seems hugely unlikely that will change. The last time I saw him (can't remember the opponents now) he was simply shocking and it looked then that he may not be good enough anymore. If he does move to a new club I wish him all the best and hope he proves to be a success. A good and loyal player for Watford, yes. One of the best around at any level? No
You say all that but the fact remains that he virtually man marked Christian Ronaldo out of that 06/07 game ... Meanwhile the Messi/Ronaldo debate still rages, both have their quality's.
"You are aware that when on top of his game, Doyley was as good a one on one defender as they come pretty much?"
Well at least if we face Lloyd again he probably won't score against us as former players usually seem to do!
One game from 9 years ago when he VIRTUALLY and apparently man marked a very young Ronaldo (20) out of the game but their first goal came from where he should have been but got caught ball watching. One game doesn't make a player. You seem to suggest because Ronaldo is a fantastic player but had a quiet game that puts Doyley on a par with him. Their career paths would suggest differently
Had a young Lloyd been able to pass the ball more than five yards, get forward and bash a worthwhile cross in their career paths might not have been quite as different as they have been. It's an outdated position but as an out and out defender he really has been among the best right backs this country has produced in recent history. Few would get past Lloyd with the ball still at their feet or put in a measured cross with him in attendance even now ... but unfortunately for him man markers are virtual history otherwise I'm sure he could still do a job.
Oh my ****ing christ what am I reading where am I, have I woken up in an alternate universe or am I the only one immune to a mind-altering nerve gas released in the UK overnight??
I said your original comment. I assume you weren't referring to a different Jamaica vs Argentina game back in 2008?
Think about it ... not many British right backs can defend any better than Lloyd even PL ones. The only real difference is that they can play a bit when in possession.
Doyley was one of our best players when played at Left-Back under Rodgers, and for a certain period under Mackay. I think that is his best position, but like others have said his ability on the ball(and maybe the occasional lapse in concentration) make him look like a liability. I don't think he should ever be played at Centre-Back again.
Some of the pro-doyley comments on here are getting out of control. He's always been a bit of a donkey whether you love him or not.
If he was really that good defensively do you not think some PL clubs would have taken him. This has to be the most ludicrous thread I've seen
