What is the point of it all then? Is life really just the prelude to eternal oblivion?

Is it true that we are just a mobile collection of hydrocarbons? Is it the case that our emotions, memories, thoughts, hopes and dreams are all just electro-chemical reactions in our brain and its a cruel trick that these things 'mean' something? Is there is no such thing as a 'soul' and we are no more important than a rock or a tree, just more complex? Is death nothing more than the end of those electro-chemical reactions?

Just what the hell is going on?

In the grand scheme of things, everything you do is pointless and means nothing.

I think it’s best not to try and this about it too much otherwise you can send yourself mad. Whenever my mind starts to wonder towards it all I try and distract myself, and think, just try and enjoy yourself as much as possible.

There is a very real possibility we do not, and will never have, have the intelligence to answer or even comprehend the correct answer to the questions you pose.
The questions may not even make sense.
We are used to cause and effect. Actions having consequences, time moving forward, but that is because of what we are and how we perceive things. It may be that the true underlying "reality" does not work in this human centric way.

Without this answer I think just try and do your best and be kind.

Nihilism is still a relatively dirty word in modern day society, but as a result of the internet/widely available information, it seems many people are now open to the concept & I can only see that movement progressing.

Will not be in our lifetime, but I can imagine it might be possible to see a world largely free of religion/s in around 4 generations.

You need to find Jesus m8.
    He's gr8.
I was lost, wandering aimlessly, until I found him.
Why do you think we are in the premier league and not knocking around in Div 2 ? Because we have out-prayed our opponents, that's why.

Supporting Watford is a gateway to Nihalism.

At 2-0 up you still don't believe you've won until 90+5

Injury time is a human construct.

Don't get too hung up on it, games go on until we don't win. End of.

A good summary, to which the answer is ‘probably not’. I’ve got no problem with hard determinism.

But your use of the word ‘cruel’ is interesting. If we truly believed that we were no more important than a rock, there could not be such a thing as cruelty. But we strongly believe there is. Our consciousness transcends matter (whether or not it’s simply an illusion created by matter and energy). It allows us to create meaning.

That’s all we’ve got and ultimately it’s just a ride.

Everything is meaningless - there’s nothing new under the sun.
The search for meaning can send you loopy.
The answer maybe in the book of Ecclesiastes written about 300BCE.
Live life every day, enjoy the simple pleasures.
Be kind, do good. Give love.
What you give out comes back to you - maybe in unexpected ways.
What comes to us all? - death.
What happens after death? - oblivion or, if you have faith in God, endless life?
    Which do we believe?
We all gamble on the outcome.
Maybe Pascal’s wager could be a clue?

Here’s a Wiki link to Ecclesiastes. Just read the Summary.

    Ask Heurelho Gomes. He knows.

I'm often asked this very question by my senior citizens as they ruminate on their lives. What's it all about, eh?

And the answer is very simple.

    The hokey cokey.

One day, when we’ve all returned to the dust and gas from which we were formed, the sun will die and explode. In doing so the bits and bobs we’re made from, formed previously in other dying, exploding stars will be propelled out into the eternal darkness and scattered to each corner of the universe.

Basically we’re all ****ed and the best we can do is take solace in the eternal celestial beauty of the the stars and the absence of anything in between them. No worries.

Best time to be alive. No need to fight in a war. Computers, iphones, colour tv, comfortable cars, house price boom has benefitted most of us, GT (god), little old watford in the prem, and we'll be long gone by the time the population boom and global warming drains the planet of the last trees, animals, and drinking water. Probably gone before Trump, the Nth Koreans, or some Middle East militant group presses the nuclear button too. Best time to be alive EVER....
