So, a Lidl store in Gloucestershire advertised six bottles of Prosecco at a dirt-cheap price. It resulted in people queuing around the store before 8am on Saturday morning. The stock was sold out by 8:05 leaving customers disappointed and upset at having to get up so early on a Saturday.

Was this just another case of the general public showing their greed and trying to get something for nothing? Or, are the connieving advertising men who work for the supermarket to blame? They knew full well from Black Friday events that such a deal would be too much for the hoards to resist. Sell a few cases at the low price and then tell them you've sold out, those stupid people won't leave the store empty handed once we've got them in the store and we'll increase our take for that day.

In 1990 Man U and Palace faced a replay in the FA Cup Final. There were about 10,000 put up for public sale at Wembley, (I'm guessing here). My Bruv in Law, being the plastic southern red that he is said, "let's go queue for tickets". We found out they were on sale at Wembley on the Tuesday morning. We got there at 5am and were probably 100th in the queue, (this was when the FA Cup was still mahusive), for the United side. We got the tickets when the gates opened at 9am, but by then the queues were absolutely monstrous.

That night and the next day the news was full of fans crying about how they couldn't get their tickets because there weren't enough. All I could think was that I despised both teams yet got there at stupid o clock for the chance to get a cup final ticket, if it was Watford I'd have been there all night. What sort of fan rocks up at 8.45 expecting to get a ticket? Bl**dy day trippers.

Always the lazy ba***rds that complain.

Brilliant work by the Marketing Team so exploit peoples stupidity and greed

Very simple really, create hype, create desire and leave people wanting more. Lidl were only ever going to sell a small amount, enough to brake even or make a small loss.

As @kVA says, they knew shoppers would leave with other goods, boosting their sales and also covering any losses that they could or would have made.

You don't become the biggest supermarket chain in Europe by not knowing what you are doing

...Aaaahh this explains it. I decided on Friday night to take the kids for a break down to Kent. I wanted to get some supplies to take down with us so thought I would pick them up when Lidl opens at 08h00 on Saturday morning. I was surprised to find a large queue outside and, shortly after the doors opened, a large irate crowd around the manager...
