Oh, and he wasn't allowed to play for the prison team because he elbowed a 17 year old lag - so he's a big man too.

The bloke is a pr*ck but you can't deny that he is a goalscorer:

If he had not tried to worm out of what he did, I would say fair do's he has done his time, lets SIGN HIM UP!!!

However, as many of you have said, the man has shown no remorse, therefore in my eyes he is a scum bag, and I would not want him any where near our club!!!

I tend to agree with you there. If he had done his time and shown remorse I would have no problem, but I do wonder how we know whether he has shown remorse or not. We are reliant on what the press tells us, if he had shown REAL remorse he would not have gone to the press, but would have approached the families of those involved quietly. If I saw a headline along the lines of "MY DAILY HELL OVER KILLINGS", I would tend to think he doesn't mean it and is only saying it to get an easier life when he gets out.

In other words, I'm confused over this one, so probably glad that he isn't coming to us, so we don't have to deal with it other than a quick(ish) discussion on here.

Whilst I believe footballers should be Role Models I am also of the belief that once an offender has served his time then he should be integrated back into society and that people shouldn't be unduly persecuted just because their chosen career is in the public eye (if he was an accountant then no-one would moan if he went back into accountancy).

So I really have mixed feelings.

I doubt he'll live the life of reilly at Oldham Athletic. He's 31 so his career will be pretty much over anyway, bar a couple of years bumming around the lower leagues. You can't go around saying because his actions killed people and his chosen profession is football he shouldn't be allowed to work. As said above what if his career was more mundane? You have to be consistent and treat everyone the same or the whole basis for moral judgement surely collapses.

The shortcoming of the law is that he probably should have spent another couple of years in prison. But that's it. You would never spend life in prison for killing while drink driving or there would be nothing to make that offence differ from outright murder. And there's a large mental step betweem getting in a car while drunk and mowing someone down and setting out with a weapon and someone in mind to finish off.

A very sensible view, I am always very cautious when using the media as a source, however, my beliefs are based on a) what I saw and b) what the media DIDN'T say.

Hughes was arrested after the incident in November 2003 and was jailed in August 2004. He played 19 games for West Brom in that time showing no loss of form and showed the same arrogance he always did (the bugger even scored one against us during that time). The crash, death and maiming didn't affect him at all footballing-wise.

As stated above, he was on suicide watch during his porridge - not because of the suffering he has caused (he obviously had no big problem with that), but because his mrs had possibly cheated on him and he was banned from playing for the prison footy team (due to violent conduct). So being banned from the footy team affected him more than killing someone? What a *******.

  18. UEA_Hornet

    UEA_Hornet First Team Captain

I would hazard a guess that most people in prison on suicide watch are there because they feel sorry for themselves, not for the victim of their crime. I'm sure he's far from alone in having had that mindset. And your last line is a little flippant (;)) He was obvious distraught at being imprisoned, losing the prime 3yrs of his career, losing his wife and his reputation. You really think he was on suicide watch because he was excluded from a prison footy team? I didn't have you down as a Sun reader ;)

good luck to lee, time to start afresh at oldham. lets see if he's still got the goal scoring touch.

  20. Chewitt

    Completely agree with that.

Agreed, scoring goals doesn't come into the equation here, the man is a scumbag and was always an arrogant wan*er whilst at WBA and proved how scummy he is when he ran away from the incident.

    Good luck ?

I cant think of any other player who has had the amount of Stick He'll get. Presumably it'll be water of a ducks back!

  22. Scalexman

Exactly, as most people on suicide watch in prison are self obsessed scum.

Intentionally, I don't want to sound too serious:).

Obviously the wife situation must have been a bigger consideration, I was just being a little unfair to him:).

When something interesting happens I actually buy a spread of papers from across the political divide, it can be very interesting to see how differently things are reported. Believe me, The Sun isn't the worst at massaging the facts - the Guardian is MUCH worse, especially when it comes to the USA. So you can have me down as a Sun reader, and also a Daily Mail and Guardian reader - I sound like a monster:eek:

At the end of the day, morals are based on emotions, which make them unreliable and inconsistent.

If he was to come to this club, what do you think would be the percentage of fans that would boo him?

Id like to think that he will get abused, as he is a nasty guy. Yes, people deserve a second chance, but 3 years in, for killing 2 people? how is that justice. To me it seems that he is not even that sorry or remorseful.

  30. BrightonHornet

But which do you rate higher, morals or the law?

If it is morals then you also have to allow other people to act according to their morals which might not be the same as yours and you should not criticise them if they act outside the law.

If it is the law, then you should never act outside of the law however stupid it is or however much you disagree with it, you can only campaign to have laws changed.

Alternatively everyone should just agree with you and do exactly as you tell them to and not have their own opinions..... :]]

  31. luke_golden

    luke_golden Space Cadet

Agreed, but as said before, if he was an accountant, would people be making such a big deal of it? I doubt it.

Yes the laws might be based on morality, or right and wrong, but they act without the emotion of a human being, which as we can see in this case, affects what people think.

law is just part of societies contract with the state. its everyones right, nay duty (locke) to question it when you feel that the social contract is being broken by being insufficient as it is here. as such, people should definitely not be nice to that guy and still hold it over his head.

    This is a boring thread.

I know people who have been inside/still inside for GBH, ABH, Murder even (now out).

Doesn't change who they are as a person and should not stop them working and earninga living whatever you have done.

Its a shame that so,e young people will look at lee hughes and feel he was the one who was unlucky. There are alot of young kids these days who think its cool to drink drive and with a 3 years sentence for murder i doubt that will stop some taking the risk of drink driving. Look at jimmy davis he lost his life because of it just because your behind the wheel does not make you safe.
