The awful realisation that there could only be one reason for his name to crop up. He was central to Ipswich matching the big clubs for several seasons. I see he was 5’10’’ but seemed a major presence.
Apart from his untimely death, I am surprised that in 2012 only 6 years ago Beattie was paid £45 for Saturday matches and £75 for weekday matches by the BBC. That does seem very low to me as a football summariser for a local BBC station, although he was a top quality player, unfortunately his rewards didn't match it! I am sure that the people of Ipswich will give him a hero's send off!
Ipswich fans of that vintage will tell you he was more than that. In the 70s he was seen as their Duncan Edwards, one who was good enough to ‘play anywhere’.
