He didnt play poorly. It's just Shittu has just played a stormer in both games.

To be honest he isnt even premiership quality he was over hyped last season.

Cant believe premiership clubs are in for him :dismay:

We cant let him go though because then it leaves Jackson who is sh!t

agree with bubble - we need jay & shittu at the back.

does that make jay worth £10k - i really dont know as I hvae no idea what the rest of the team are on however if I were jay and saw that jackson was on more then I would want at least the same

For Jay to leave someone has to want him though don't they? I't's more than likely paper talk. However the guy is on a contract, and when that is due renewal, then is the time for wage demands, not trying to hold us over a barrel just as the window is about to close.

Maybe foolham have made an offer and we are considering to sell or to pay Jay. Maybe Jay said he would be happy to stay if we were to pay him what another club would pay him.

Maybe he should be told he ain't really 10k good and he's being paid what he should be.

Sadly players will listen to their agents and try to take advantage of the increase in money we have.

Is he worth 10k a week?

I am not sure but then again I would not want to see Jay leave.

Nor do I want to pointlessly shove an extra £200k/year odd down the drain.]#

Though we can afford it, wasting money isn't the way to go.

Its all academic anyway nobody will want him that is in a better position than us.

having just got rid of clarke, allowing Jay to go makes no sense - we ahve won two games and looked solid at the back.

I'm surprised at your reaction potguy. your putting Jay on £6k a week with that £200k additonal wages figure.

I disagree with you, I think there are teams who would want him who are in a better position than us.

What sale price do you put on his head?

Wouldnt he have had some kind of offer thought to be able to quote an amount of £10k, I don't want him to go but I think that if what has been reported is true then he is kinda putting us over a barrel if he has had an offer.

Make him prove he's worth it. A bonus equivalent to that wage every week if he keeps a clean sheet.

But if we sell him and don't sign a decent replacement then it might be shoving £60million down the drain.

He had the whole of last season playing against some top footballers to prove what he is worth is as far as playing in a Watford shirt , but It's hard to decide wether these wage demands are excessive without knowing how much this equates to as a percentage rise on his current wages. It could be that he is currently the lowest paid first team player and feels aggrieved that there are players who are sitting on the bench / reserves on more than him.

wasn't everyone screaming out for him to be called up to the yankee national team just a year ago. I can't understand these scathing attacks on aplayer who has played with heart and soul while wearing the yellow shirt.

If he see's this thread he will also wonder why the uck he is here.

And will people please put a price tag on his head if they want him to go because of this so called wage demand so we can discuss the merits of the money we would be saving on his wages and how much we would spend on a better replacement and how much that replacement should be paid.

The fact is Jay wants to stay with us, that's the important thing, all he is asking is that we offer him the sort of money he could be earning were he to leave. He's willing to play championship football with us because really he doesn't want to leave when in all likelyhood the fact is that he could go and play in the prem. £10k a week isn't much nowadays and imo Jay is worth that to the team.

Where have I attacked him ?? if anything I am trying to defend his so called 'demands' ,at no point have i said that he's not worth it . All i did was point out to Meister that he showed his worth last year , meaning that he shouldnt have to have a pay rise on the mentioned bonus basis especially as there is more than one peron in the team responsible for keeping a clean sheet. !!

Think you should have directed your frustrations out at someone who has attacked him on this thread

Well, firstly, I recall an interview with an American press posted on here a few weeks back which I think put his wage in the region of £6 1/2k a week, give or take a bit. Which is where I got the £200k from.

I just think that we are setting a bad president really. Now, its understandable that someone like Marlon who is very nearly irreplaceable as a 20+ goal hitman can demand higher wages.

Jay is a good defender. That is it. I do think he does have potential to be very good if he becomes more consistent and controlled, bu fact remains three years ago he was probably on far less than £40k a year and playing for us happily. Strikes me our excursion to the Premiership has put his - and his agent's - head in the clouds.

I do not want to sell him at all. If push came to shove I would pay him the extra as I think especially with the sale of Carlisle he is vital to our promotion.

But he is not irreplaceable, and I am wary of players cashing on on us being a bit richer. You signed a contract, so live with it.

And for the record I reckon he is worth between £2-3m, depending on what club we are talking about.

Ok fair reply - but IMO a player who is worth 2-3 million would be eearning at least 10k a week. Collins John for example wants how a week and the price tag was £3 million ( give or take) -

the point is he is not irreplaceable, but with CC now gone we do need Jay as finding a replacement at this stage will be nigh on impossible ( unless its a swap deal and dosh)

I just feel people are being very harsh on a player who wears the watford top with passion and pride and has been a decnt player for us.

How do we know his comments are true ? this is just agent talk as usual.

Nobody on these boards know how much a player is on a week, it is all Chinese whispers.

Thats the disappointing thing. He does wear the shirt with pride. By all means negotiate your contract at the appropriate time (i.e when it has nearly run out) but don't go around demanding to be paid more money for no good reason.

Perhaps a £3m player should be on more, but I wouldn't have expected him to go about like an egotistical ****** at the beginning of the season demanding more money for his services.

Innocent until proven guilty - it is only at this stage a report in a speculative column of a paer and we do not know the true circumstances of the source. If Jay actually said this, I can see peoples point of view about it, but at this stage IMO the reaction is very OTT.

The career of a professional footballer can be very short and opportunities to make enough to retire on when/if necessary do not happen often.

He was worth 40K a year, he is now worth ???K a year... why shouldn't he want it ? It's all very well to talk about loyalty but, if he gets crocked in the next game and can never play again, the club will pay out the rest of his contract and he will then be broke. If he is worth 10K a week now, he should get it. By all means sign a contract extension as part of the deal. On the other hand, if he is not worth 10K, he should not get it, in the full knowledge that he may do a Connolly on us and sicknote till the end of his contract so he can go on a free and get a huge signing on bonus.

The fact that this rumour is public concerns me since it implies that he or his agent are trying to force the club's hand. On the other hand, it may be completely false, or it may be something that Aidy let spill by accident after Jay spoke with him about the matter. I don't know so I will avoid judging anyone until we find out what happens.

Meanwhile, a good defender should have a comparable value to a good striker... If Jay prevents a goal against us, Marlon doesn't have to score as many. I am not saying that the two are comparable class players, but we would need to find a comparable replacement and I don't see too many out there available as August fades into September.

I think we need to be very careful here. If we give Jay what he wants the avalanche may start rolling. Offer him the equivalent as a bonus if we go back up. Offer performance-related bonuses/wages. Give the players incentive. But don't open up the wallet too wide because it will mean everyone wants more.

The big issue here is to keep in mind this:

To get someone else AS good - how much would we have to pay him?

Rumour is that Derby and Middlesborough are watching the outcome. I am sure they will both offer him more than £10k per week.
After all we have probably saved that much by selling CC.

    A couple things...
I really respect many even most of your opinions on the game, how it's played, how well and how poorly the players play it, how skilled players and gaffers are.

However, between the quality (or lack thereof) of the press coverage and the lack of information about what players ACTUALLY make, I don't think anyone has any clue what they are talking about with regard to players salaries, save those who say "an athlete's career can be over in an instant, so more power to him". Sorry to be so blunt. I hope you still love me. Really.

Also, it's not like there isn't enough money. How many years could you pay a player 10k a week off of Bouazza's transfer fee alone? There is no limit to what teams can pay except financial solvency, if not mere common sense.

For your edification, since MLS actually DOES have a salary cap limiting what payrolls can exceed, the salaries of all players on all teams is public information. That makes it very easy to tell if someone is underpaid or overpaid. There are a lot of losers making good money and a lot of kids terribly underpaid. Jay would fit in around the $150k - $200k mark here.

I don't like to attitude pay me or I leave. But we dont know how much of that is down to the manipulating of words by the press.

If Jay sees other players around him on £10k or more and thinks he is worth it - why not ask. If you are at work - however much you enjoy it - and your colleague at the next desk earns a lot more than you for doing the same work as you as well as you, why not try and match it.

Although he has not been a pro all that long Jay is nearly 28 and so hasn't got years and years left in the sport.
