Yes you are right. I thought he was in situ for the first 2-2 Hull replay but it was Tom Walley.

More admirable for his attitude, but, no, he really is not a better player.

I'm sure you've made a good point. But presumably we had to pick from who was available, (unless we to do an Everton).

I may be wrong but this is surely the only FA Cup Tie where one team had three managers during it - Bassett for the first game, Walley for the first replay and Harrison for the second replay.

If we count Walley as a Watford manager, then he is my 28th during my time following Watford. I used to enjoy going to Millwall when JT was playing to hear the Den faithful chorusing "Walley is a gherkin". Took me a while to figure that one out. As did their comments on John Thomas....

If you're counting Tom Walley you should also count Bertie Mee, who took charge for a bit when GT was hospitalised (appendix I think?).

If you insist - though 29 sounds a bit excessive and boastful.

I presume if the worse did happen he wouldn't stick around for a season in the Championship - lets hope we don't have to find out!

Surely, surely, surely not the riot act. Make it clear everybody's in with an equal chance, full-on match against Southampton (and probably in training, too) so people can show what they are made of plus one or two items (built on in successive days) that help to organize a defence. Their confidence as a team needs boosting and their confidence in him as a trainer does, too.

I remember this well, listening to it on the radio on my new Walkman I'd got for xmas:). Officially, Tom Walley was in charge - but Steve Harrison was in attendance, and after going in two goals down at the break he joined Walley in the dressing room to give the players a "rollicking". It seemed to work as we snatched the draw.

Harrison mentions being with the team in his programme notes for the 2nd replay:

And the highlights of the game show him arriving at Hull with Elton John:

Silvia's problem was that once the injuries took away the threat we once posed with one up front, he didn't use the resources we had left to best effect. Who gives a stuff no-one else plays 2 up front? When you've got a ready made big man knocking it down for the ready made little man to stick it in the net only a fool wouldn't give it a go.

  15. I thought it was down to me turning up at half time, a little tiddly from a long train ride, and preceding to berate our fans, using the most unpleasant language, for standing in silence in a moment of need. Some may be surprised to hear it, but I can be a complete nob at times. Got a lift back on the coaches, but, if justice had been done, I would have been left in a puddle of pee outside the station.

  16. So. Just because we look better when we play two up top, why should anyone think its worth trying it out given the squad we have?

    What was your point again?

  17. Thought you were making valid points, and as you pointed out on numerous occasions, what was being said was pure speculation; important to bare in mind up until the proof comes out.

There was an issue with some posters where, rather than entering into the discussion, they seemed to think it was unfair to speculate despite what seemed like clear evidence; but in my opinion it is important to remember that there are other possibilities, however convinced we may have been.

Sorry, I am doing my signature 'pompous patronising' thing. I'll get my coat.

Issue is the sticking it in the net. I'm not sure either of those donkeys could finish a chicken dinner.

Edit: Deeney could definitely finish an actual chicken dinner, I didn't think that through.

QSF didn't have the injury problems but even he recognised that by having two up front could be effective even though it was against his philosophy.

More like not being played to their strengths.

In the two most recent games Silva dared to try it out cos what we were doing wasn’t working:
    - Deeney came on vs Southampton and knocked it down for Gray to run onto - good save from the keeper.
    - Deeney came on vs Leicester and knocked it down for Gray to run into - good save from the keeper.

1 up front is sometimes a joy to watch but you need quality behind the 1 to get results. When that quality disappeared Silva ignored an alternative formation that was staring at him.

I’m feeling optimistic. He can, at the very worst, only be marginally less successful than Silva has been since the Everton approach.

When you’re flatlining any change has to be a good thing.

I wonder if our upcoming fixtures against the big 6 inspired the choice of a head coach who has reputation of upsetting the big boys.

All this debate about the manager and why he was chosen is all well and good but you are all missing a salient point. The Pozzo model decrees that any manager appointed must be easier on the eye than the average English football manager. I am pleased to report that, although he's no Joka or Flores, Gracia does fit this model so, for that reason, I'm in.

Yeah I know. What I was trying to say is that results will likely improve even if it’s just by virtue of the fact they can’t really get worse.

One of coaches was under Enrique at Barcelona , could have been in charge of paper clips for all I know , but at least he’s got Barcelona on his CV.

Another played and scouted in England so should know the lingo.

Has to be better than Walter's pregnant man assistant manager last year. He' the inspiration for Deeney I reckon.
