Shame. Wanted us to get a goalkeeper where we dont expect a mistake each game rather than one where it might happen.

    Found a rare non-fan?

I know what you mean as he had a shaky reputation but Gomes has generally been excellent and one of our most consistent players.

His current mistake rate with Watford stands at about 1 per season.

    Too many for my liking.

We're not little ol' Watford anymore. We should be signing robots who can be runaway winners of the Player of the Season Award and also not make one solitary mistake in a game away at the eventual Premier League champions.

There are probably five goalkpeepers in the world who I would want instead of Gomes and all of them are at massive clubs and would cost tens of millions.

He's just brilliant. Distribution scares the **** out of me but I've never seen a better shot stopper play for us.

i'm not saying he's a disaster by any means it just he always makes me nervous at times when we play. Flapping at balls and what have you.
I like the goalies who are less flambouyant, boring almost, who just do the basics without concern.
But as moog points out we would have to pay more for those.

If his supposed flamboyancy makes you nervous then that is your issue to be honest, as aside from his howler versus Leicester I can't recall any clear examples of big mistakes he's made for us in his two seasons here unless I'm forgetting any.

  9. brilliant keeper one of the best in the prem last season, god knows how spuds screwed up but whatever happened its been our gain

Poor for at least one of the goals against Norwich at the end of the season as far as I recall

You're right, I stand corrected. It's more like two mistakes per season.

  12. Fair of you to say this, though I don't know how any person, fan or not, could have come to such an opinion having watched him play for Watford over the last two seasons. It would seem a shame if your opinion of him is predominantly formed from the few seasons at Spuds in which he gained what seems now to a ludicrous reputation for buffoonery, because that wasn't only a good few years ago, but also completely non-evident from what he has done since he got here.

There may be 'keepers that some consider better than H, but frankly, for demeanor, spirit, ability and, yes, reliability, there is not one of them I would swap for Gomes right now. He is up there with the best to the point where what you may gain from one will be compensated in some other way, and the difference in our over all performances would be negligible, if not detrimental.

Gomes is perfect for us, IMHO, and I am happy to enjoy his performances for what they are, rather than to allow long dead history in some other world to cause me unnecessary angst.

But we all have our own ways of managing expectations, and whatever works for you is cool.

He saved us last season. Best shot stopper I have seen here. I'll forgive occasional wobbles elsewhere in his play. Didn't he save a crazy amount of penalties?

I'm sure if you went through the season you could find more. Mistake against Liverpool as well for their second goal and gave away at least two penalties.

I love the man, but he is hardly faultless. Still think he is a fantastic keeper for our level though

He may want to retire in Brazil, he's spends his summers there - after all he's done for us, he's earned it.

Understandably cautious considering he spent the best part of three years sat in the reserves because of his long contract.

I'm enjoying my football at the moment, we're doing well. The Head Coach is great. Deeney is great, everyone is great. The lads have enjoyed the last couple weeks but we must now concentrate on Burnley as it's going to be a very tough game, we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves.... etc.

I assume I don't need to listen as it's most of what I just wrote above?

    from the original interview...

"i used to have a a spanish coach and now its an italian with a completely different head. expectations are always high when you change a coach because getting used to new methods is always intense work.

the new coach is very disciplined and focused on details. when he tells you to do something, you do it. we used to play 422 but now its a 352 with the possibility of a 433

i help on an off the field because everyone knows i have lots of experience in england and europe

i will do a coaching course this year. i think i'd be great at coaching, but i dont know if i want to do it. its nice to be prepared either way. the players union encourages it.

did you know van der saar went to man utd at 35? i'm not saying this is what i'm going to do, but i have 2 years on the contract, i'm still motivated to be the best, so lets see what happens in the future.

lwhat happened with leicester doesn't happen every year. our board is ambitious and we had a good season last year, but we are a realistic team. we will fight to get our best position and in the premier league even the smallest teams can get good signings because of the economic situation the league finds itself in

its a bit crazy/scary that teams can spend so much money. the pogba fee was a little bit outside the realms of reality, but thats english football for you.

the high fees are good in a way because it shows football has good organisational structures behind it. on the other hand, small teams struggle to build teams naturally. in england players who are not world class still sell for 50-60 million euros (why is he using euros?) and it distorts the market in other countries.

juventus didn't need to sell pogba for financial reasons so they got a high price. in brasil, where the organisation and administration is still awful teams like palmerias need to accept any value for players like gabriel jesus.

gabriel will go to man city like any other player. sure he can be the best, but at first he will be treated like any other, because a 32 million euro player doesn't have the same cache in england like it used to."

boring article. but it's always good to practice portuguese i guess
