Because we are talking about signing a player who is already 33. Dawson signed a 5 year contract probably in the hope of us getting a small transfer fee for him in 3 years time.

We haven’t got small fee’s for Prodl, Kaboul, Britos, - why would that change for Dawson?

Where do you get £75k from?

Kaboul was never fit for the last 2 seasons, Prodl is still here so may be sold and Britos retired. We may, or we may not get a fee for Dawson but I suspect that is the point of the contract.
At the end of the day if he’s excellent for Palace it’s a great signing but I think it’s a big risk and the last time I saw him play he was terrible

John McLelland's available on a free, low wages...worth a punt.

We are not getting a fee for Dawson at 32. we gave him a 5 year deal to convince him to sign.

There are no fees coming either for Kaboul, Prodl, Britos, Cathcart or Holebas.

That doesn’t answer the question I asked though. We signed Kaboul on a 3 year deal when he was over 30 Prodl 4 year deal when over 30 and not one rumour of him leaving. Britos given a new deal when 33 - him retiring is irrelevant. None of those deals point to us trying to sell them for a small fee. We are protecting a very small investment at that age.

The deals point more to the fact that we think those players will serve a purpose on the pitch at those ages.

Hear what you say but I think a 2 year deal for an ex England Cd at 33 is less of a risk financially than a €30m+ deal for a 21 year old from Rennes. You might think he’s not worth it but I don’t think it’s a “risk” like Sarr would have been had we been able to sign him. No upfront fee, no built in expected exit fee for Cahill.

Plus he’s a proven winner (PL, Cups, CL) and has captained both club and country. Would have added sorely needed leadership in defence.

But hey, ho - either way, not happening.

Always sceptical about signing ageing defenders from big clubs, sometimes they leave to go down the table and look a fish out of water. IIRC Palace don't exactly need defenders, but they do need a bit of youth rather than another old head

Oh it is absolutely no surprise whatsoever that he’s gone to Palace and they haven’t blinked at the wages. I have every belief that they will also be one of the clubs to sign up one of Welbeck, Sturridge or Carroll on a huge deal too.

Can’t believe we’ve missed out on this one. Clearly our top target, only to be beaten by Palace.

Him and Les Dawson will be a formidable partnership.
