I know this happens in a few countries (think Iceland might be one), but i would be in favour of something like 2 points for a high scoring draw, like the pools systam does. But it could work I suppose. Perhaps it is because our american friends at cocoa-cola have just renewed the sponsorship deal and they saw those Budweiser World Cup adverts and did not see the irony This reaks of Americans sports with the view of everygame has to have a winner and a loser. This is the sort of thing that should be trialled lower down the leagues first such as the conference south/north, like they did with those kick-ins instead of throw-ins a few years ago
Can't scrap draws and have a penalty shoot-out, what a stupid idea! I can't explain why it is stupid, except it is! I agree there should be a bonus point if you score 3+ goals though, like with bonus points in rugby union
Well I can think of one obvious reason why it is stupid. We have a team newly promoted to the Premiership with a solid defence and creative and hard-working midfield but lacking a Premiership quality strikeforce to turn those draws into much needed wins (bit like a superior form of us at the start of the season). With penalties being a lottery at the best of times, this team will probably lose 3 (or will it be 2?) valuable points to many teams after being the better side on numerous occasions, eventually getting relegated at the expense of a poorer team who over the course of the season just happened to get luckier from 12 yards out. You could also apply the reverse argument about a team playing plenty of exciting attacking football but with a dodgy defence that is chasing promotion or a European spot and often draws games 2-2, 3-3 etc. Without our 15 draws last season we would not have even finished in the play-offs, so you can't overestimate the importance of draws, whether or not some people are narrow-minded enough to believe they encourage negative, defensive-minded football.
Agree with that 100%. You typed what i was thinking, i just didn't have the energy to actually think about it and write it down.
Maybe............ A team should only be awarded 2 points for a win in this way, in stead of 3, and possibly the losing side could still retain the usual 1 point?
i see where you are coming from but have to say i disagree, that would create confusion in the league, it would give the losing clubs point they dont deserve imho!
There's no need to change the points system in english football, the only change i'd even contemplate agreeing with is a bonus point for scoring a certain amount of goals but even that is a pretty POINTless ]]) thing to introduce.
if its not broken, dont fix it! I think it applies to this situation really! I dont know anyone who isnt happy with the way things are at the moment quite frankly!
Us WFC fans..... would probably be happier, because we have had a lot of draws this season about 12, imagine if just half of those had been converted into wins, we would be we would be 6 points better off, even allowing for the other half being converted into defeats. Don't forget that most of our fellow strugglers have not had anywhere near tha amount of draws that we have, so they would not have fared as well as us under the proposed new system.
No, no, no, no, no... :dismay: Abolish draws? What's that all about? Why don't they just declare everyone a winner and promote the three biggest clubs every season? Or what about awarding points for novelty chants, cans of coca cola consumed and best looking director?
There is a positive to taking pens at the end of a draw, perhaps and it's a big perhaps English players would get used to taking them and will not f*ck it up in big international games .
EXCLSUIVE Commentry from English Football in 3 years time (American accent): "Approaching the end of the 4th Quarter here at Madison Square Garden and its still Manchester in pole, Chelsea on the offence with Adu, great team play, Ballack...AIR SHOT, Ally Ooop and off the rim from Shevchenko, falls for.... oh what a great SCORE from Drogba! 2-2! and just when you think Drogba's spent 6 minutes in the Sin bin for simulation!!....And look at this!!...Roman is running down the aisle, hes just su-plexed Mourinho!! Randolf Learners getting involved, it mayhem here at Madison Square Garden !..There must be a winner tonight ladies and gentlemen, and now time for the Free shot shoot out sponsored by Budweiser...." "And tommorow night, Its the Liverpool Dolphins at Newcastle!"
Crazy idea. Will never, ever catch on. Why risk a point for three and end up with nothing? Plus teams could go up without ever winning inside 90 minutes. CRAZY!
