Either that you get as take out on your way home or make yourself

    I’ll start:
Toasted cheese sandwich. I’ve tried many variations and if I may this is the best:

lightly toast two pieces of white bread. Place on grill tray, garlic paste or finely chopped garlic to very very thinly cover bread, thick sliced mature (salty crystal vintage is best) cheddar to cover then a few finely sliced mushrooms, salt, pepper and oil to cover. If available some truffle shavings.

Grill at full blast until you like it

    Place bread together and slice

  2. Too much hard work for "late night food", sounds great but more like dinner!

At uni there was a Chinese takeaway on the way home from town that did spring rolls as fat as your fist. By the time I'd munched trough one of them walking up the hill the fat and grease had dripped out all down my trousers.

Legendary. This is over 20 years ago and just the though of them has got me salivating.

Fudge me, the place is still there:

I thought I was the only one! Garlic paste/purée thinly spread on thick bread, maybe a little sun dried tomato paste too if I’ve got it. Nice cheddar so it gets a proper bubble on under the grill. If I’ve got the house to myself I’ll usually pick up some anchovies because I’m not allowed them when she’s around so they might make it on too with a few black olives.

I usually keep it open rather than sandwiches but I’ll give that a try next time. With increased alcohol consumption comes increasingly elaborate and creative late night snacking.

I threw together some gnocchi with a sage and lemon butter the other night, I’m a right lardy ******* at the minute.

Oh man you’ve just reminded me of these pancake rolls I’d buy after finishing work at a bar in Nottingham. An obscenely big duck and bean sprout roll deep fried, easily as big as a size 9 shoe.

I seem to remember asking if there was a way of them injecting cold hoisin sauce into the roll to cool the contents and just to have a bit of hoisin sauce. Never happened though.

...and you didn't sauce (pun intended) your own plastic syringe? I'm disappointed in you.

Fish finger sandwich with brown sauce
Following on from Hornmeisters post about the grease on the trousers, there used to be a kebab van outside Amersham station and one very cold evening after a night in the pub I had one to eat on the walk home. Once I reached home I noticed that the fat from the kebab had formed a stalagtite off the bottom of my wrist!!

Sorry Knight GT, but that is utterly wrong, has to be tomato ketchup on a fish finger sandwich....white bread as well. Now a bacon buttie has to be brown sauce

I’d say neither for a fish finger sandwich, tartar sauce and some cornichons, made with sourdough bread as well.

Little bit more difficult bread wise unless you've prepared in advance! Fine with tartar sauce though but definitely not ketchup @rochdale away

    Pickled egg anyone?

I bet she loves it when I sneak into bed two hours after her smelling of fags, beer, vinegar and eggs. What a catch.

I've recently discovered the joy that is a fish finger sandwich with mature cheddar and a garlicky chilli sauce. Absolutely wonderful sandwich.

Someone posted the exact same thing the other day but when I liked the post something went wrong and the post had disappeared.

    How strange.

I definitely agree that there’s something special and well, a bit gratifyingly dirty about sweet chilli sauce and cheese. I used to do super noodles with chilli sauce and Red Leicester as a drunk snack.

It was me on the wrong account!

The super noodles sound filthy. There used to be a fantastic takeaway in Watford called Hot Stuff that did cheesy chips and onion bhajis. Whack those two together with a bit of chilli sauce and it was glorious.

    Fusion cuisine at its finest.

Serve the noodles on toast if cooking as a main course.

That sounds disgustingly glorious, like an alternative spaghetti hoops on toast.

This is why it is wrong to have la di dah fans of other (more successful) clubs on the forum. Next thing you know it’s all sun dried tomatoes, garlic paste, olives and more Pimms chaps? Watford fans are salt of the Earth types to whom a bag of scampi is a big day out.

I had a couple of jars at home last night, and was inspired by this thread to throw together some fish finger tacos.

Flour tortillas from the local Mexican bakery, some jalapeño ranch dip my wife makes, a bit of coleslaw and a couple fish fingers. Lovely stuff.

    Thank you, forum.
