Dixie Hale, an absolutely central figure in our first promotion to level 2, has died it seems. The epitome of the all-action midfielder for whom the team came 1st, 2nd & 3rd. RIP Dixie.
Blimey, so sad. I was only watching a documentary on him and his footballer brother about a month ago. RIP Dixie.
Oh this is terrible news. I used to sing that song in my romper suit, not knowing what it meant! Sincere condolences to his family. RIP Dixie.
No he was a hard man We has Duncan Welbourne and Dixie at the same time - either could make Roy Keane cry! ZZ - where was this documentary?
Commiserations to his family and friends, I also watched the documentary see below (523) 2000, The famous Hale family of Waterford. Alfie , Dixie and Harry - YouTube
Terry Garbett was no shrinking violet either and Dennis Bond got stuck in Plan A - win the ball and give it to Scully
He did play in my first season (69-70) but not between Jan 3rd and April 18th - my one and only game that year was March 6th and he wasn't involved. Thought you would all like to know this
My first season was 67/68 and Dixie was a huge favourite of mine along with Tony Currie (briefly), Scully (of course) and Terry Garbett very early on. In the documentary mentioned by ZZ and Teide above (a great watch by the way), Dixie talks about the FA Cup 4th round game against Man U in 1969 as his best ever game, assume the one at Old Trafford rather than the replay! Here's stevo's vid and great to see Scully sidestep Bobby Charlton before slamming in our goal... I got a late call up to go to Manchester as my dad's friend wasn't well, so I got his ticket. I was so excited I could barely speak all day and refused to believe we had scored until around half time as things like that just weren't possible when Best, Law and Charlton were on the pitch in the opposition. I do remember my dad telling me how well Dixie had played against some of the best players in the world. Great memories. RIP Dixie
I have to admit I don't really remember Dixie, but as he played for Watford that's good enough for me, so may he R.I.P
Very sad news but unfortunately not totally unexpected. A totally committed player and still had great fond memories of his time here under Furphy. http://wfcforums.com/index.php?thre...graphs-video-thread.55508/page-4#post-2967261 https://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/soccer/arid-40287974.html
Yes same here. In my mind he was like our very own version of nobby stiles but that was young eyes and now old memory. He didn't stand out to me for some reason but then my heroes were Scully, Duncan W and Tom W who played like Robbo did later.... Sad news.
Yes, he was hard as nails in midfield, ran himself into the ground, but could also play a killer pass. I still remember the one that put Barry Endean in for the winning goal at Swindon in our promotion season.
I was brought up on stories of Dixie dancing in a hoola skirt down the Social Club! I always thought that Joan Baez's song "The night they drove ol' Dixie down" (Originally a tune by The Band, I later found out) was all about him, and when I heard it on the radio imagined some scene down Occupation Road involving a big yellow car. I also only knew him as Dixie (he was a friend of the family) so I also used to think people were talking about him when they were talking about some footballer called Dixie Dean. I didn't realise they were two different people for a few years.
