Guess so. Don't be surprised to see a fully fit Janmaat starring for his new club over 90 minutes next weekend.
We gave him a new contract at the end of Feb this year! We could've just let him go at the end of his contract this summer but instead signed him up for another two years whilst he was long term injured! Surely there must've been an agreement that he had to demonstrate fitness or maybe he's agreed to cancel it without pay? Otherwise this would actually take the biscuit as the single most idiotic decision we've ever made.
Obviously it’s important to hear from Roy and louorns on this matter, but other parties such as the player and the club may also have valuable insights.
Well given that Roy told us about Capoue's change of heart a few days back, we can expect an update from the club on Janmaat sometime early next week. Of course, any one of the journalists could ask at Ivic's press conference but they seem happy enough asking the same questions over and over again about Sarr, sometimes even repeating what the previous journo has said, so I won't hold my breath.
Bizarre (as always) if true, given the recent new contract (also bizarre). A much, much better player than both Femenia and Navarro when fit but unfortunately that now seems to be pretty much never.
A fully fit Janmaat always starts for his club. He then plays well, on average for approximately 1.25 matches. Then something breaks, flies off, explodes, shatters, pulls, melts or otherwise ceases to function. He then is unavailable for periods ranging from 2 weeks to 6 months.
TBF, all that Roy has said is that he's not with the main group and won't be back, he hasn't said if we're releasing him. I genuinely don't know what the best course of action here is, with Welbeck I don't think he was on a huge basic salary, and must still harbour hopes of getting one last big move, hence we settled amicably for free, I can't see Janmaat settling for that
Maybe there was some sort of clause inserted into his new contract that allowed us to release him if he was unable to get back to full fitness by a certain date? Just speculating, what are your thoughts?
I'll be sad if he's gone, but to be honest he's never been the same since he got rid of that long cassette tape haircut.
I'll be honest I thought he'd already gone - think he'd basically said he wanted to leave at the end of the contract and he left Newcastle when they got relegated. Didn't expect him to show us any loyalty
Twenty six appearances in last 30 months is the clue why it’s worth paying him up. Ultimately if he is unlikely to contribute, its best to part now and free up a full squad place, and plan the campaign with players likely to be available for selection, even if on the day they are not as talented, but competent enough for the campaign. It is unrealistic to retain him for a future Premier League campaign.
He could model the third kit for us and earn some of those wages at least. Ideally when we announce Elastoplast as our new sponsor.
What other club would give a 2 year extension to a player who’s highly susceptible to injury, is currently in rehab from a serious knee injury and is a high earner, all while the club teeters on the edge of relegation?
Not if it enables (or was thought at the time to enable) us to get a transfer fee for him. With relegation, getting his wages off the books probably becomes a higher priority than holding out for a fee.
Given his injury history when given the extension, his age, and the location and calibre of clubs who would ever be realistically interested in purchasing him from us, how much of a transfer fee do you think we could ever have expected to get, and how prudent a decision do you really think it was in light of that, though? It's pretty much been written in the stars for quite some time that he's going to go back to the Netherlands, and they have no money to speak of, relative to the concept of a Prem, or indeed just English, team 'getting a better transfer fee'. In reality, all it ever did was prohibit/discourage teams from coming in for him, and as a result force us into keeping hold of him and in turn not adequately replacing him/actually recruiting a competent right-back/backup right-back.
Exactly. It’s just the usual poor thinking that we must get a fee for a player at all costs. The fact that the risk of being lumbered with an injury prone ageing player on high wages who nobody wants vastly outweighs the potential benefit of getting a small fee is not considered. A deeply illogical move.
The wisdom of our contracts is born out by the fact that nobody else is willing to take them on. If players were worth what we were paying for as long as we were committed to paying it, someone would snap them up. The fact that we have to pay off contracts, farm out to Udinese or hang onto useless crap that weakens our squad, shows how rubbish our decision making has been for the past 3 years or so.
I don't think it was a good decision, just an optimistic punt to get something for a talented player whose current injury problem may not have looked so bad at the time.
Considering that last extension was given in February this year, if that was how they adjudged the situation at the time, then we should really be rather concerned about the faculties of whoever it was that did the judging.
The Pozzos seem to just absolutely despise losing players on a free or letting them run down their contracts. Maybe they’ve run the numbers and overall it still works for them to always try and keep players at least two years so they can try and get a fee for the. Not defending this by the way, it’s baffling in the instance of this particular player, but it just seems to be some sort of blanket approach they have, so there must be some reasoning behind it.
At least there's no favouritism between the Pozzo clubs in this regard. Seb Prodl is having a lovely time in Udine, got one more year left on his contract and he's only had to play 70 minutes of league football since the 17/18 season. He's a glorified training cone - if you can get yourself into the Pozzo system, boy will they look after you.
Player: "Right, I know I'm coming towards the end of my career and I've had a lot of injury problems but I'm hoping to extend my contract here for another ye..." Pozzo: "We'll give you four years and an automatic extension for a fifth if you play more than 25 minutes within those four years" Player: "O...K... but I..." Pozzo: "Alright fine, you drive a hard bargain. Six year deal with a two year extension if you turn up for training at least once a year" Best negotiator in the world.
Have we managed to get a fee for any of those players we bizarrely managed to sign up to new contracts for? We've just released Holebas (OK, he may have been able to do a job for us this season), Gomes (who's time was absolutely up, he 100% should have left a year ago rather than sign another extension) and it looks like Mapps is being released too, yet the sky hasn't fallen in
