Considering some professional forum software

As you might be aware, this wonderful SMF software is free. It's by far the best free forum software available, by a mile. However, because it's free, you get the occasional little bug, especially in the add ons like the arcade. It's also quite a dog to customise, as I've found out by trying to play with stuff on the test forum.

So I'm considering a total upgrade to a professional package such as v-bulletin. V-bulletin is what was used by wfcf.com when it was around for a few weeks in May/June time. Not only is it very very stable, but it's also easily customisable and has a shed load of add ons, including some very good arcade stuff. Another advantage is a bug free economy, a virtual shop and a virtual bookie for gambling our virtual money away.

Downside is the cost, currently £91 for a lifetime licence, then just £20ish per year for upgrades after the first year. As I'm sure we'll be around for a while then I'll probably do it sooner rather than later, but I'm just trying to sell some stuff on ebay and hiding away the money without "her indoors" finding out ;) If you're interested then check out v-bulletin here. http://www.vbulletin.com/

Please don't think this is a cry for cash, it most certainly isn't. I'm just thinking aloud and passing on what's probably going to happen. Just checking out what I can do with the licence etc before I make the jump.

I'll have to say out of all the forums I have visited, this is by far the best and easiest to use. No overcomplicated junck but enough power to do just what you need. Can't speak about ease of administration however.

    Another good one isused on:

But the vbulletin does look good.

I think we all agree that the 'fishal board is a load of Luton.

Had a look at avforums. Looks quite good. I'll investigate more tomorrow. The reason I like v-Bulletin so much is that I've been a moderator on a board that uses it for a while now and it's just so easy to use. It looks good out of the box too.

I have used phpbb2 forums before and they have been very good, and easy to customize

I've made a decision. I'm definately going for vbulletin software "fairly" soon. Loads more and much better quality games, a virtual economy, vbookie betting events, a shop to buy stuff (with your virtual cash), loads more addons, easily configuarable and loads less bugs than the free stuff. Watch this space.

Just purchased it. Currently downloading it to my hotel room in Sweden. I'll try a test install later and let you know how it went and what it's like. If successful then I'll do an upgrade on the main site early next week hopefully ;D

For those of you who have never used it, trust me on this, you'll love it!

I've been playing with the new stuff a little bit and it's extremely involved. So many options that it's hard to know where to begin! I've changed my estimate from next week to the week after. If we're here to stay, (we are), then it's going to have to happen. Trust me on this, you will learn to love the new software!
