Sunderland have agreed a £5million fee with Cardiff City for top scorer Michael Chopra, according to Sky Sports News.

The former Newcastle United striker enjoyed an impressive debut season at Ninian Park, notching 22 goals in 42 Championship appearances.

He also scored both goals in Cardiff's 2-1 win at Sunderland last October and is now discussing a move to the Stadium of Light.

Bluebirds boss Dave Jones recently revealed the club had fielded no offers for the 23-year-old and stressed his wish to hang on to Chopra.

But Jones also acknowledged that every player has his price and it appears Sunderland have matched Cardiff's valuation.

Roy Keane has moved for Chopra after pulling out of a £6million deal to sign David Nugent from Preston North End.

Meanwhile, Iraq international Nashat Akram is still waiting for an update on Sunderland's reported interest in his services.

The midfielder claimed last month that talks were being held over a potential move from his current Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab, but has heard nothing since.

Akram said: "I haven't heard anything. My agent is dealing with everything, but for now I am playing at the Asian Cup and I am concentrating only on this.

"I have never spoken to anyone at Sunderland, only my agent has talked to them.

"Of course I'd like to play in the Premier League, everybody wants to play there.

"I know about their coach Roy Keane and that would be good for me and good for Iraqi people."

5 million is alot of money, too much in my opinion. I like the way hes now playing for sunderland, and i reckon he will score against newcastle. :]]

However, this is another striker off the list of possible buys.

I think Kamara and Chopra are hideously overpriced. £6mil and £5mil respectably is more than I would have paid for their services. Anyway, that is the weird and wacky world that we live in.

Would have loved to see him back here, but not for that kind of money.

£5mil for Chopra?! Sunderland must really be getting desperate.

They haven't made one signing so far who would suggest to me that they're not going to get relegated again.

I think it's inevtitable now that average to good players will be commanding that kind of money...it's no secret what the Premiership teams are making moneywise just by being in the Premiership now, and Championship selling teams can hold out for that kind of money knowing that they will eventually get it. I bet you if it was a Premiership club who had come in for McAnuff they would have to have paid more than we got him for...

Hopefully we will be no different if it comes to bids coming in for Boozer/Shittu....

Quality signing by Sunderland...will do well in the Premiership! I don't think he's over priced at all! Young went for almost £10,000,000...they're paying for potential just like Villa did!

    Will score goals next season!

    haha £5m.

£3m absolute tops. The only reason Ash went for so mcuh was it was January and Villa were desperate.

I reckon he will score 10, and play 29 games.

Nick mate, no way on earth is that a decent deal.

He's largely unproven in the Prem, I think he scored 1 goal with Newcastle who are a better side than Sunderland.

5M? Never saw Keano as the type to get desperate.

Hideously over-priced, sure he's a good player, but there is no chance he'll fire the goals Sunderland are going to need to stay up. Can't see any Premiership clubs losing any sleep about playing against him.
