I’d agree I think the best result for us/worst for you would’ve been you defending a draw or lead for 80+ minutes. That would’ve sapped your energy and then if you lost it at the end also drained a bit of confidence. As it is you seemed to be going through the motions, so I don’t think the result would’ve actually been that energy draining or confidence sapping. You’ve been on a good run so I think a heavy defeat to city will be easy for the players to compartmentalise as one of those things.

Looks like Hendrick and Lennon will be leaving Burnley at the end of their contracts and there is an unease at the club. (All from The Athletic, well the clickbaity headline anyhow)

Im glad you say it's seen as disgusting in Burnley, but I'm not sure I believe you. How does it sit with Burnley's 'whites only' first team squad. As far as I know Aaron Lennon is the only player you've fielded this season who isnt white and he's half Irish! It looks pretty dodgy to the outside world that the Burnley fans who protested against black lives matter were the only fans of the 20 PL clubs to do so during the first round of matches and support the only club that has a 'whites only' recruitment policy. I know you have some younger homegrown BAME players on your books but your club's recruitment policy was there for all to see against Man City. It will be the same on Thursday, half our outfield players will be black or mixed race and they will be taking on an all white Burnley 11. It's not a coincidence that all of your team on Thursday will be white, it's a calculated decision made by your club to foster a 'whites only mentality'. It's not surprising some of your fans made the 'white lives matter' protest when every player on the pitch and on the bench was white. These 2 things feed into each other. You guys are dragging football back to the dark days of the 70s and 80s both on and off the pitch.

Oh come on. You’re saying Burnley has a ‘whites only’ policy? That’s clearly nonsense, not to mention illegal. Remind me which club we bought Andre Gray from?

How do you explain 18 white players in the team and on the bench last night against City and not a single non-white player in a league where about a third of players are black. You think thats a coincidence? Aaron Lennon is the only non-white player currently on Burnley's books to have played for the club in the PL.

These stats are interesting but are different to the ones Chumlax was quoting about US police shootings.

The KFF stats are about overall deaths per 100,000 What I infer from them is that is that more black people die per 100,000 than white people by 100,000 which links into life expectancy variation which I suspect would tell a similar story. I suspect that deprivation has a part to play in this but either way it still highlights a sense of race inequality which supports the idea that black lives should matter as much as white or any other lives.

I’m not sure there is a problem with stats in this instance as the both tell the same story.

    Yes.

To repeat, any such policy would clearly be illegal.

Saying "White Lives Matter" is racist. The rules are different and everyone knows that. Whether it's right or wrong, that's just the way it is.

Personally I think the slogan "Black Lives Matter" is provocative and divisive. It sends out the wrong message and will anger some non-black people. It divides people because it's not all inclusive. For the message to be powerful it has to be all inclusive. This is what's behind the Burnley slogan, a largely white working-class community, a retaliation saying white lives matter too.

Saying white lives matter specifically, now, when nobody has any reason to, is what is offensive.

In another context, for a different reason, sure, its fine. To fly a plane over a football game where people are symbolically noting that black peoples lives do matter, it's a simple slap in the face.

Sorry @domthehornet couldn't let this one go:

Poor old "big nose" gets an undeserved bad press. They had quite a unique and sophisticated culture (recent burial finds have reinforced this), were really 'tough' sons-of-bitches living a hard life (most of their skeletons have shown show numerous healed fractures) and were only out-competed by H. sapiens when the climate began to get much warmer and wetter (end of the last Ice Age). H. sapiens lived alongside them for much longer than previously thought and judging by the 1-4% of Neanderthal DNA 'we' all carry it gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "...alongside...".

This 'non inclusive' complaint is a load of rubbish in my opinion and such a cop out.

You say you don't feel included. Ok then! Try spending a day in a black person's shoes. They started this whole movement and have named the movement as such because they don't feel included and they face outrageous discrimination and prijudice in all levels of society. Personally, as a white British man who has grown up in privilege, I am happy to stand in solidarity with this movement because I understand that for once, it's not all about me and white people.

There are 2 groups of people who find the 'Black lives matter' slogan provocative.

    1. Racists.
    2. Those who has simply misunderstood the message.

I don't think you are a racist by any means, Hornetboy1, I thinky you have just midconstrued the slogan.

Utter piffle. Conflating your dislike of Burnley’s on-field tactics with the racism issue is a totally facile argument.

I'm just being honest rather than politically correct. The slogan is divisive, there's no point denying that. It will wind up certain sections of society, hence the Burnley banner. Non-white people can look at it and say "hey, what about me, doesn't my life matter?". It's obvious some people will see it this way. That's why I don't think it's a good message. It will divide rather than unite, which is the problem.

Racism exists, but there has been a lot of improvement in society in general about excepted behaviour. Go back to the 70's/80's and compare the two from today. A lot more needs to be done, but society, in general, is going in the right direction. These campaigns give a bit of kick up the backside, and incremental improvements tend to be made.

Go back to the 70's. There used to be comedy's like On the Buses or Love Thy Neighbour. Extremely racist. People often referred to black people in a derogative way. It was normal in those times. But people have been educated since then, and the vast majority know what is the right behaviour. What is accepted and what is not.

You will never irradiate hard-core racists. They tend to exist in poor, large white populated areas, like Burnley & Liverpool.

Go to central London and no-one will blink an eye if you dress like a fairy with a magic wand, walk around naked painted blue, or whatever you want to do. Being black, foreign or gay means nothing at in central London. It's all tolerated.

Considering black people are a minority in the UK, looking at the line-ups in the Premier League, I'd say they are over represented by 2 to 3 times. I think they do OK in that respect.

It's a remarkable observation. Didn't Gray play for Burnley? I've just checked their squad and noted that Ali Koiki is black. Aaron Lennon is of Jamaican heritage.

I agree, there are few black players in their squad, compared to us for example, but I believe it's to do with the region. Do you think Burnley would turn down the chance of signing Ismaila Sarr? Of course not. Maybe it's a case of black people don't really want to live in Burnley. It's a two-way thing.

You can have an all-black team, all-white or mixed. It shouldn't matter. All that matters is the ability of the player. Making observations that Burnley only have white players is unhelpful and casts a slur on the club. I'm sure Burnley Football Club would sign 30 black players if they were better than the players they have now. It's all about getting the best team you can for as little money possible.

I remember Watford played a friendly at home when Boothroyd was manager and every single player was black. I didn't even realise until about 80 minutes before I twigged it. This is normal. Most people, especially when judging football players, don't see the skin colour. They just see the player and he is judged solely on his ability. Colour has no relevance at all to most people. Unfortunately there will always be a minority of hard-core people that think differently, and it's these people that need to be targeted and educated, if at all possible.

  33. Everyone of sane mind supports (a peaceful lawful) BLM movement.

Everyone of sane mind supports the eradication (or irradiation if you prefer :)) of discrimination based on ethnicity, age, gender, sexual preference, class, disability etc.

However, claims that Burnley FC are racist because the majority of players are white, or that US police never shoot whites, asians, hispanics do the movement more harm than good because it makes it appear protesters are all complete loonies.
