Wigan have given Sunderland the go-ahead to speak to their manager Steve Bruce about taking over as the new Black Cats boss, BBC Sport understands.

It wasn't that long ago he left birmingham to join wigan.

The only benefit about going to sunderland is that he will get more money due to a new takeover, but saying that i think atm wigan have a much better squad than sunderland.

In the summer at wigan valencia is going to go which is a downer for bruce but he would get the £15-20 or whatever they sell him for but will be at least £12m imo. I think the manager will get to spend all of it to rebuild the squad.

Do you think going to sunderland would be a step back? I think that he has certainly improved wigan and whats to say he can't improve them even more after the valencia money? They seem to find some hidden talents for a club of there size and premiership standard palyers eg scharner, zaki, palacios, rogallega, valencia, figueroa

Also i thought sunderland were going for a big name manager?
Thats what they said when Sbargia resigned

Wigan are as good as they're going to get. Some very good players, but the club can't grow any further.

Sunderland have a much larger potential. Big stadium, loadsamoney, and an alright core of players. If Bruce could poach the best from Wigan, who will be very hurt by losing Valencia in the summer, and put the money to good use then they could be in Europe in a few years, which I don't see Wigan doing.

Plus, if Newcastle stall then Sunderland could well become the Premier club in the North East, which would give it even greater potential.

Also, although Dave Whelan is a good bloke, I see Niall Quinn being a fantastic boss to have, especially since he's given, via verbal contract on MOTD, Ricky Sbragia a 'job for life', despite him being poor-to-adequate in his time there.

Sunderland are a much bigger club than Wigan.

Wigan are a poxy club who act as Africa's feeder club to get into English football. Poor support too.

Sunderland are the biggest club in the NE, noisy, loaded, have a mahussive stadium and a massive support base.

    Wigan<Sunderland.

Wigan and Bolton should come back down here into the Chumpionship where they belong.
