The law he decreed stated that every couple was to have children until they had a boy, and then they were to stop procreating. What effect would this have on the proportion of males and females to the population? Explain.

A. No effect at all. There will always be a 50/50 chance of a boy or girl no matter when you stop.

It would increase the male population.

Statistically there are slightly more males born than females, therefore, in a large enough sample, more boys would be born first.

 

As berkshire said, there would be no effect at all since the chances of having a boy vs girl is 50/50.

The 50% of mothers that had a girl could then have another baby, but half of those would have boys and half girls, keeping the ratio of boys to girls roughly 50/50.

In ALL the countries listed (including UK) the male:female ratio favours males.

UK figure is 514 boys per 1000 births.

 

I presume the question was "assuming" a 50/50 split.

 

Why would you presume that? It is not and never has been a 50/50 split.

Shouldn't answers to quiz questions be based on fact rather than assumptions?
