Beckham watch: just seen beckham in asda in watford ordering cheese. Watch this space.

That was Chris Packham not Beckham. Beckham was at the deli counter ordering onion bhajis.

I'm not sure I believe it but my mate who has some affiliation within his camp has told me he's leaning heavily towards a London based club to be near home, one which would value his move rather than just put him on high wages and bring him on as a 'legend' now and again. Wonder if the championship appeals, I doubt he could get a CL club at his age...

He should sign with Watford, so the Pozzo's could move him to Granada and Udine and back to WFC and sell three versions of a Beckham shirt, and all that.

    Becks for WFC!

That would be a marketing masterstroke by the pozzo's. But the amount of shirt sales all 3 clubs would generate still wouldn't cover half his wages.

How much profit is in a shirt? They cost about $70 when new here for replicas, $90 for 'authentic'.

Let's say there are $50 profit in it, just at average.

Beckham sold 300,000 Galaxy shirts in the first 9 months, the 9 in which he barely played, I might add...anyway:

    $50 x only 200,000 shirts = $10,000,000

His Galaxy salary is $6.5 million.

Let's say he sells 100,000 WFC shirts, 100,000 Granada CF shirts and 100,000 Udinese shirts: $15,000,000 total profits.

Say what you will about the Beckham camp, but these guys know how to make a buck or two.

What's the difference between replica and authentic?

  11. Fitz

    Fitz Squad Player

For Adidas, Authentic is supposedly what the players wear, with mesh sides to be lighter, and has the things like scudetto sewed on or league patches, where the replica is full cloth and has just the team patch on the breast...I dunno...they look the same to me but some geeky purists insist on the other over the one.

What does this do to your figures:

Look, I know we are talking about something so unlikely to happen that it is virtually science fiction, but not so long ago, that's what people thought about a team in an obscure league in a footy backwater. Also, this is not a Pozzo style move; it doesn't fit their business model. But having said that...

Yeah, why not? We are talking about David Beckham, regardless of what team has his name on the back, people will buy the living **** out of those shirts. I was just looking at a random photo of visitors to a trade show in Malaysia and one guy had a 2008 Home Galaxy jersey with Beckham's name and number on the back. The wearer was pretty unlikely to ever have gone to LA, yet he was wearing it. (Posh would make WFC change style and colors though...McD's yellow and red won't be seen on Beckmann.)

So based on this, let's say the kit costs £8 to make and let's use a generous exchange rate of $2:£1, so $16?

    $70 - $16 = $54 profit on each replica.
    $90 - $16 = $74 profit on each authentic.

So yeah, it could conceivably pay the player's salary for a year right off the bat.

These teams for these odds are a riot...

For any tempted bettors, he isn't going to go to another MLS team, so don't bother with the Timbers or Red Bull...

Any Chance Of Beckham to Watford

I not going to start saying about any inside knowledge and all that. When Becks said he was leaving LA he said he has one last challenge left in him? This would suggest something he has not done before.

I assume money can no longer be his goal, He is checking out Eton as well for his Children and the Family Home is in Hertfordshire. Is there even a smallest possible chance that he could be part of "the project" with the possible backing of Adidas and a coaching role at Watford, one of the less known clubs and so less pressure? just a thought?

Elton maybe able to talk him into as well?

As much as I would like to see this unless he wants to take a mahoosive pay cut (or someone daft enough to pay his wages) I very much doubt this'll happen as discussed in this thread.

I like it how people think that because he's mates with EJ would mean he'll play for the club.

Regardless of his age, without a shadow of a doubt, ticket sales, shirts and just general publicity would improve, and he's a legend.

Many players have endorsement deals from Nike or Adidas or Gatorade or airlines or shaving cream or razor makers and get additional pay for doing their ads and the like. That is not, however, a playing salary.

The link below is the 2012 MLS Salaries list for all MLS players.

    http://www.mlsplayers.org/files/October%201,%202012%20Salary%20Information%20-%20By%20Club.pdf

He gets paid $3,000,000 per year before playing bonuses, and if he hits them all, he gets up to $3,999,999 per year. If you divide $3,000,000 by 52 weeks it comes out to $58k/week, or if he hits all his bonuses it comes out to $77k/week.

EDIT: why do English measure football players salaries by the week? They surely aren't paid by the week...

As far as I know, most players over here are paid weekly. Well, that's the figures that the press report, anyway. We don't read about how much a player will get per year, we get '£50,000 per week' or '£250,000 per week'. People here would say that Watford players earn £3,000 per week rather than £256,000 annually. Not sure why, because we wouldn't for most other professions!

  33. nascot

    nascot First Team

I would imagine players are paid monthly in the same way as the majority of full time workers in the country. It's just the press that use the weekly figures.

I get paid by the moon.

Do you get paid in cheese Moog?

I would say that the reason for the press stating weekly amounts is that it is easier to quantify rather than "Becks earns a salary of £3,567,880.21."
