none of these poems are abuot why we had to go to war. they are all anti war, but i supoose we should just let germany and the rest take over europe?

Ah well that one was a little different. Plenty of political forces behind that one, at a time when the industrialised countries were still dominated by the upper classes while the lower classes lived in comparative squalor with a poor electoral system. Arguably communism in Russia rose out of the whole class war caused by WW1.

It wasn't even seen by the public as a righteous war (unlike say WW2). On a very basic level it was a fight between related royal families, so you can maybe understand why the majority of the working class conscripted soldiers were a little peeved at being sacrificed so George (UK) could fight cousin Wilhelm (Germany) to back up his cousin Nicholas (Russia) who was bound to support Serbia where Wilhelm's mate Franz (Austria) had been assassinated in 1914.

Add in gas, summary executions for cowardice, concripts aged under 16, commanders still using outdated 19th century battle manouvres, trenches and no end in sight to a war that was predicted to be over by Xmas 1914 and you can imagine why the soliders weren't too happy with things...

both world wars were just general terms. world war one was also about eastern european countries establishing ethinic and civic nations which interfered with major central european countries and britains interests in a balance of power led them getting involved in those areas whcih as uea summised, is not really relevant to the oppressed massess.
