What anti-virus spyware malware etc programmes do you recommend?

Currently I have the free Avast! one, but are there any more specific spyware/malware ones that are free and good?

    Thanks.

I 've used Avast for years without issue. Currently using Avg as I think it has a slightly lower system resource requirement.

Imho avoid Norton/symantic, Macafee and Kaspersky. They are all over bloated and slow to react to new threats.

I find that AVG Free is half decent.

I have used the following. Norton on the XP a few year's ago was draining on the CPU and RAM but recent editions are very good.

Kaspersky is excellent , certainly in my case with instant updates in real time. I also use the virtual keyboard when making online transactions. McAfee is a real nuisance. It is bloated and also restrict's legitimate sites you should be able to access.

    Bullguard are pretty good too.

You can download fully functioning trial's of all these programs Simms and see which one you are most comfortable with.

Always run automatic updates from your internet security program , use a free program like Lavasoft's Ad-Aware to remove cookies and always install essential MS's updates ASAP and a keep an eye out in the general news for potential upcoming threat's.

Run a general scan daily and a full scan each week to make sure everything is entirely clean and use complex passwords (write them down and keep them safe).

I've used this in the past and it was pretty good. I'll give it another go, thanks.
Haha I hope this is a joke? :sign15:
I always used to use norton but it was awful and slow. I want a free one anyway so i'm not willing to pay for a norton type product.

Mcafee was installed free on my laptop when i registered with the uni internet, but I disabled it because it's just awful.

    What about windows defender?

Yeh I always try to if i can, and everything i download I run a quick scan on that folder.

Don't really need one unless you go on a lot of porn sites and other dodgy ones

But as 99mph says, don't browse silly websites and they probably won't even be needed.

I wouldn't go completely antivirus free on a mac. Just asking for trouble.

There was a trojan virus spreading around, but it mostly affected macs in the US and Apple released an update ages ago.

To clarify, windows computers are still far more susceptible to viruses than macs, but having some sort of anti-virus software on a mac is probably still a good idea.

Its a compromise. Open architechture which allows many people to develop for the system, but consequently will have security holes, or a closed architecture which only licensed programmers can fully utlise, but therefore more secure.

    Each system has it's advantages.

Sorry to say this but the best anti virus is the user of the computer, amount of people that happily click on links from facebook or emails without thinking is unbelievable.

Agreed. Not worth risking for the sake of some free software and a minor performance hit though.

I know only too well you annoying a virus can be.
