I know that a lot of you have not been around as long as me and many of you have been around even longer, but for me it has to be Tommy Mooney as he was and still is (see his two interviews on the Watford Legends thread) Watford through and through and always gave 110%.

Even though I'm old enough to have seen the likes of Barnsey, Cally and Luther play, Tommy is still my No.1 :notworthy::notworthy::notworthy:

Tough one to answer! For me Tommy would probably be my number 1, but I have quite a few players that I loved watching over the years of watching Watford all for different reasons. I always enjoyed watching Colin Foster and Keith Millen...Johnno will always be stuck in my mind for that last minute screamer against Wolves at home (My first ever game!) Heidar for his spirit, Robinson the same. Kevin Miller was superb at his peak, as was Chamberlain. Rambo for possibly being the most gifted player I have seen in the shirt, however he made me pull my hair out as well for being too laid back! To be honest I could go on for ages mentioning players I loved watching, unfortunately none of the current team come in to that category apart from possibly Smith. I am sure in years to come though I am sure Doyley will come into it for comedy value alone...I will never forget him picking the ball up at home to QPR last year!

Can I have two? Tommy Mooney and Richard Johnson. As they both gave everything for the cause, and as a kid I was in awe Johno's missiles! On my 10th birthday, home to Northampton Town he scored a 25 yard screamer, will never forget that...

Of course theres still loads of other mentions... Smith, HH, Gibbs, Palmer, Robinson, Chambo, Bazeley... basically the 98-99 squad for me!

I wasn't around for most of the 80's so I can't say Luther or Barnes.

Depends under what criteria you would judge a "favourite player"

In pure footballing terms i would have to go for John Barnes. I would certainly say that he was the most gifted footballer who has ever represented our club.
In terms of effort put in for the team then players such as Les Taylor, Wilf Rostron, Nigel Gibbs and Mooney are all worth a mention.
Luther is and always will be an icon of Watford fc.

But my personal favourite has to be (the original) Ross Jenkins.
Not natuarally gifted and almost discarded when GT came to Vicarage road..he went on to prove all his critics wrong by spearheading our rise from obscurity to the pinacle of English football. He played for us when we were placed 92nd in the football league..and (after a short sabbatical playing in the US) was there when we finished runners up to Liverpool.
Throughout he maintained a special relationship with the supporters..who i believe appreciated the amount of effort he had to put in to keep improving his game.
His was the name i shouted when i scored a goal in the playground and he will always be my favourite all-time Watford player.

Great thread VoR! Love reading everybody's favourites and the little reasons why, brings back loads of quality memories.

Being fairly young, the likes of Barnes, Jenkins etc were before my time, but i still love reading about them and how good they were, just wish i'd been able to see them in their prime.

But there have been some awesome players here during my time as a Hornet. Impossible to overlook Nigel Gibbs simply for his service, without mentioning the fact he was fantastic player.

Johnno also stands out, i'll always remember that screamer he scored at home against Northampton as one of my favourite goals.

Mooney for obvious reasons, had such a special relationship with the fans and never failed to give any less than 110%.

Heidar and Robbo also deserve a mention just because of the passion they showed for the cause when with us.

One thing about this club during my lifetime is that it's never boring, we're either up or down and despite the criticism we give the players so often, we have had some quality players that have been a joy to watch for a number of reasons. Going back and remembering these players does make me proud to call myself a Hornet.

To chose one of the above is a difficult task and I'd have to say Barnesy.

Greatest Watford memory I have, that goal, and so I'll have to him.

I am a latecomer to Watford (first match: 1996) so I didn't see Barnes, Callaghan and Blissett LIVE in the GT mark 1 side so my four favourite post 96 players are:

    Tommy Mooney
    Robbo
    Heidar Helguson and
    Tommy Smith

plus an honourable mention to Chamberlain and Gibbs

I think Heidar Helguson would be mine. I've only been watching Watford for about 10 years so wasn't lucky enough to see Blisset, Barnes et al.

for pure football skill undoubtedly John Barnes

but favourite all time player yeah i'd go with Mooney.

i think fans like players they can relate to. If i played for Watford i would play like Tommy Mooney, but with the best will in the world will never be John Barnes. I love players that just go mental when they score like Mooney did, forget all those poncy Thierry Henry type celebrations.

Also Don't forget Mooney played through some fairly lean years before the upsurge of the late 90s but was always a bright spark and loyal throughout.

Happy new year one and all

Personally the Viking,Sir Tommy and Robbo. As a fan the least I want from my players is fight and spirit and the willingness to die for the shirt.

These three had it in spades. :notworthy::notworthy::notworthy:

    Johnno too.

I will never forget one particular moment of genious, when in the penalty area away to Everton, he displayed great vision & awareness to sit on the ball

Though not my favourite by a long shot, I always had a soft spot for good old Dominic Blizzard.

Those days were fun. Blizzard in the middle, Jack Smith and Foley occasionally popping up to boot the ball somewhere entirely incorrect.

Well I missed the glory (in terms of our history) years but still had fun watching the likes of Robbo, the 2 Tommys (Smith/Mooney) and Heidar.

Chamberlain was the rock at the back for so long too.

Did get to see Gibbsy and Luther too but not at their peak.

For somebody coming from a long spell in the Premiership and International football I liked Alan Nielsen and the way he kept on going withouit moaning despite being placed on the transfer list under ****** and sticking around during Lewington's 1st season.

Other midfielders like Johnson and Steve Palmer were probably my favourites at the time.

As other options when we weren't very good during the mid 90s I quite liked Andy Hessenthaler but then he did leave in somewhat iffy circumstances....same with Kevin Phillips.

Agree with Rontaylor about Cliff Holton, but must include Stewart Scullion, Dai Ward, Tony Currie, Tom Walley and Keith Eddie.

It may seem hard to believe to you youngsters but we have had some graet players over the years.

I first went to The Vic in 1966 and Terry Garbett was my favourite as a kid. He went on to play for New York Cosmos in the same team as Pele and Beckenbauer.

Others to impress were Billy Jennings (he could jump and hang in the air for ages), Alan (Scratch) Garner who won over the fans after joining from L*t*n, and then any of Graham Taylor's team. If I had to single out any, then Luther, Barnesey, Ross Jenkins, Wilf Rostron and Les Taylor.

More recently, Richard Johnson, Peter Kennedy and Heidar.

My Dad always raved on about Cliff Holton, but I never saw him.

    Good call for Billy Jennings.

    Then Tom Walley and Blissett.

Of the current crop, Harley, Smith and Doyley are the ones with the character to be legends.
