On the latest interview from the official site Aidy says that he will stand or fall on his own decisions and that Burkinshaw's influence grew less and less as time went on. He rules out a similar figure coming in. (Failing in the play-offs has done nothing to mellow his self-confidence and arrogance). Sounds like we have little money to spend unless we get rid of players. Also says that Marlon was on nothing like £22k / week. Last season he says we were about 5/6th biggest payers, next season we will be mid-table in the pay league for this division. If you are on Watford World it is worth listening to but doesn't inspire me with confidence for next season.
I've continued to support him, but surely the fact we got worse over time coincided with KB's influence decreasing...I can't believe that he doesn't accept that he needs someone to help him - he can't be a 'one man band'. All the best managers have a good assistant that they can trust but who will help question decisions
The overwhelming majority on here seemed to want Aidy to stay, but only if he had a new mentor to come in and work alongside him. Now that this has been ruled out, I wonder what those people's thoughts are?
I still say we should keep him. Because next season he and he alone will be soely responsible for the direction of this club. He and some fans will point to the disruption with Marlon, Bangura, Burkinshaw etc etc as reasons for our failure to gain promtion this season. If he feels he can do it alone, let him try, but he'll live or die (proverbially) by the consequences.
He was solely responsible for this season. The fact that you provided a string of excuses for him shows how easily he will be able to pull the wool over your eyes again in a year. 1. The new playing style disrupted the flow. 2. The new signings needed time to bed in 3. Ellington was arrested for impersonating a footballer 4. A long-term injury to Lionel Ainsworth hampered our season. etc.
I'm not denying that he should take the blame for this season. I'm just stating what he has said and might say again. There were a few things that may have hampered our progress but at the end of the day he and our players SHOULD be professional enough to let it go over their heads and focus specifically on the task on their hands. If next season starts like this one ended, we will be in deep trouble. And Aidy will be to blame. If that is the case, I'd back a change 'upstairs' as well as with the management.
And yet we'll all be giving it a sceptical 'Hmmmm' when he bangs in a hatrick for Derby this September
LOL I thought the moaning would stop when the season finished. I didn't appreciate there would be a whole new season to look forward to being depressed about.
You're right. We should all spend the summer fooling ourselves that with a player clearout, a reduced budget, the same coaching and a more competitive league we will soar through next season. Alternatively we could all design a new kit.
Mid Table - A Result! That says it all - we were 5th or 6th highest payers and where did we finish? Next season mid range payers - mid table will be a good result. We will retain Aidy as we can`t afford to pay his contract up (or hire him a mentor, which he can`t admit he needs, due to the financial situation) - so he has total responsibility, and will need to make it work, as the `R word` is too dire to even contemplate.
Let's just see what happens this summer first! I actually enjoyed the interview with Aidy on the fishal website! It was refreshingly HONEST (which is something i've wanted to hear ages ago). IF Aidy can trim the wage bill, and IF he can wheel and deal and get some good players in, then who knows what will happen! Aidy managed to assemble a promotion winning side in 05/06 with a very small budget (a fraction of what he had this season), and with a very small squad (we were fortunate with injuries)! I think next season will be one of the toughest divisions in years, but let's give Aidy a chance to show he can turn things around! As I have been saying for months, if Aidy can admit he's made mistakes (which he has), and if he can deliver a new dimension to our play (which he did, albeit a bit too late this season) then i'm more than happy for him to carry on! If he had come out with excuses and was too ignorant to change things, then I would have advocated sacking him! Let's just see what happens over the coming months!
Hello reason, its been a while since you came to these boards isn't it?! Complete sense. He knows where he has gone wrong and has probably learnt a good few things. If we have a transfer window like January's when we brought it three quality players then we have nothing to worry about. To me, last January shows that he has learnt an awful lot about the transfer market, and the play off games give hope that he also understands that when you don't have a rugby team you can't play rugby.
The emphasis was on the worry not the WFC. I will enjoy the crazy speculation and rumour on wfcforums and the panic that sets in when other teams start signing players and we don't. But I won't worry because other people are paid a lot of money to do that bit for me. Then I'll decide on whether I've bought into the new style when I see it.
Bubble should be Aidy's mentor ... a sympathetic shoulder to cry when times are tough and able to load a pistol if things get really tough !!
I still think Aidy needs a Peter Taylor (Cloughie), or a Don Howe, (George Graham), to become a top class manager, I don't think he can do it on his own, but I will be happy if he proves wrong!!!
I think the much lauded change in playing style is not down to Hoofroyd seeing the light, more probably that he discovered some home truths during the hour lock in after the Scunny game....but it doesn't surprise me that he is taking credit for it. Now he claims no assistant will be joining, heaven help us (and him) I see no redeeming features in the man & do not see him doing anything other than paying out lots of money to get rid of the expensive flops he purchased and blowing even more money on fools who have an agent with a good video of their hopeless clients who occasionally masquerade as footballers. And I was rather foolishly hoping the summer may bring some good news!
