Aside from some industrial football in the latter stages the "bad times" associated with Aidy's stint at WFC are more to do with the ineptitude of Ashford & Simpson. You don't go giving the manager money you can't afford to give him or dish out contracts you cannot afford to fulfil, irrespective of what the manager asks for.

All the success he had was down to Keith Burkinshaw. Our style of play and the type of players we decided to buy were based on his advice. When he left the house of cards collapsed and Aidy ran out of ideas.

Ady was crap. Got lucky one year and ended up signing crap players like Stewart, Sadler and Kabba while never giving talented players like Rinaldi, Aloi and Cavalli a real chance

INDEED, lucky in the first half, then **** in the second.

Stewart was constantly one of our best players in the premiership.

There is no way you can get a side (that is favourite to be relegated) promoted and attribute it to luck.

I would say he was lucky that Nicky Forster and Sam Parkin turned him down and that Junior couldn't get the right permit which lead to him signing King and Henderson.
I would say he was lucky that Tony Coton told Ferguson that Watford would be the ideal club for his development due to having decent fans.
I would also say that he was lucky that we had Ashley Young on the books.

So I would say he was very lucky that season and it could easily have been very different. His luck ran out and it hasn't returned.

One season wonder? - Was that his first full season when he got us to the plays offs, his second when we reached the FA Cup semi final or his 3rd season when we reached the play offs again?

Everyone needs luck to an extent. There is no way he would have got us promoted without some other positive managerial attributes!

Boothroyd's acheivements are less than Iain Dowie's.

As far as I'm aware Aidy wasn't in Dr. Who.

Compare their records, I think even you would agree Aidy did more for Watford. :dismay:

I don't understand why some people are so strung up on past Managers and Aidy in particular. It is not like he ruined the club, he gave us a year at the top, and now we are back down where we belong. Why does a thread need to be started every time he joins, or does poorly at a club. Sure he has not turned out to be the manager some of us thought he would be, but he is not in charge of us now, so leave him be, and focus on the task at hand for the club now.

One could argue that Dowie allowed us into the top flight. His contribution in that semi final was as important as Aidy's.

Really? He took us forward(saved from Div1 and then promoted) but you rekon we went back 10 years! How many years have we spent in the topflight? Aidy has a part in our history now, yes he does Moog. Who the hell do you think we are?

We were not in the bottom three when he took over, if my remember correctly. And he left having wasted all the financial support he was given, with us poorer than when he started. One of three to blame for a three sided ground.

Excately!! He might have given us some measure of success by getting us to the prem for one season and an FA cup semi final, but instead of giving us a platform to build upon & put the dark days of the post vialli era behind us we ended up back where we started from within a season & abit. And tobe perfectly honest if the club hadnt replaced him when they did we would have been relegeated from the championship without doubt. Yes, he gave us some good memories but he has come nowhere near to being the manager we all thought he could have been.

Aidy does have a part in our History, as does Petchey and Bonser and Perryman et al.

Doesn't mean he isn't a cancerous blight on our club, responsible for a crisis from which we are still recovering.

Every time we hear that we have to sell a player, or lose a manager, or are outbid on a good signing, or have to delay our ground development it is Aidy's legacy still having an effect.

So we managed to get one season in the top flight? And came down dead last at the first opportunity and are still paying the price.

Would I rather we'd not got promoted, but had a sound financial base today, a decent infrastructure at the club and a secure future? Damn right I do. Our club nearly ceased to exist thanks to Mr. Boothroyd and his wastrel behaviour. Thanks for the memories, but please don't ever come back.

We were not "at the bottom", or even nearly "at the bottom" when Idiot Boy took over, we were 15th and needed 5 points from the remaining 7 games to stay up - needless to say 3 games and 3 straight defeats later, we were 21st before we got lucky and played relegated Rotherham and already packed up for the summer Stoke

The measure of Hoofturd is that he took over the 21st worst team in League 2 and has turned them into the rank worst team in the entire league in the space of just 6 weeks

Mind you, were I a Northampton fan, I'd quite fancy a year or so in the Conference and some local derbies against Luton and Rushden and I'd be sure that we'd got the right manager to ensure that we'd be heading that way in double quick time - no wonder they're happy with him

As a regular visitor to Sixfields this season I can tell you performances have improved considerably since Aidy took over. Unfortunately he has to work with the dreadful squad that Gary Johnson left him with.

But Moog you miss the point, we are a cohort of Luton, Lincoln, Shrewsbury, Gillingham, Aldershot, etc they are the sort of teams we have played over the years not Leeds, Forest,WHam etc how far do you want to go back?
Do you blame it on Elton and GT for leaving? Aidy gave it a go in his first managers job and yes he made mistakes who wouldnt? The promotion season shines bright in my memory, and so does getting relegated into div4. And that is why I will always be grateful to Aidy who helped raise this club into the top flight way above our normal station, we might not see it again our bank balance may suffer but this is a football club and I wont let a few people who know everything after the event change my opinion.

If I'm going to take any real notice of posts on this thread about Aidy Boothroyd in 2012 I think your post is the ONLY one with any substance

I've read Moog, Lizsrd & myoldarling's whining whingeing claptrap about AB too many times to give thejr opinions any credence

One word to describe THEIR take on Boothroyd's time with us:
    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!

maccatwo nice try but the Aidy bashers won't have it any other way....

They will ignore the successful promotion year and suggest it was just luck and will never ever accept that the players or A£s£h£t£o£n & Simpson pulling the purse strings and encouraging his profligacy had anything to do with his departure

I'm surprised they aren't blaming him for the recession and the Italian cruise ship disaster too.
