Here's a few stats from the ever popular(!) WhoScored.com to evaluate our Premier League season. Not too much surprising, clearly backs up the impression that we weren't great to watch though. On the other side of the coin, we intercepted the ball a lot but didn't have to make many tackles - QSF deserves the credit for that as it all comes from his beloved defensive shape.

    Things we're good at

1st for long balls with 80 played per game
    2nd for penalties scored
    2nd for bookings
    3rd for interceptions
    3rd for fouls

Things we're not so good at

17th for goals from open play
    17th= for crosses
    17th for average possession
    17th for pass completion
    17th for tackles
18th for offsides given against our forwards

    Deeney

Deeney was 2nd for headers won per game behind Gestede but won the most overall due to playing far more
Deeney to Ighalo was the joint top assister-goalscorer combination (with Alli to Kane and Ozil to Giroud)

    Our Squad Stats

Nyom picked up the most bookings (8)
Jurado had the best pass completion! (84.1%)
Deeney had the worst pass completion of the outfield players (60.9%)
Ake made both the most tackles and interceptions per game
Britos made the most clearances per game
Cathcart and Prodl made the most blocks per game
Capoue was our most fouled player and also committed the most fouls
Cathcart made the fewest amount of fouls per game
Abdi scored our only goal from open play that was from outside the box
Behrami didn't have a single shot all season
Ighalo was offside the most, got dispossessed the most and had the most "unsuccessful touches"

Not difficult when it's either sideways or backwards.

Really? Surely a 20yd sideways pass is harder than one that goes 1yd forward?

    Less pressure on interception though.

To be fair I think I was being a little facetious.

Hardly surprising. The amount of times he would be strolling back from an offside position when we were ready to hit it forward was infuriating. Meant we only had Deeney as an option if we had to go long.

When we're first for long balls played, I think we should be glad if someone moves the ball sideways or backwards.

Flores didn't sign Gestede because we "aren't a long ball team".

    He was a serial liar.

The stat that struck with me was for all our new signings this season, only three goals were scored by them all season. Two of those by Prodl.

Pretty damning stats. I'm sure I wasn't watching that team for the first 15 games or so. The stats seem to paint a picture of a team that lost its shape and abandoned its early strategy quite dramatically. Not surprised QSF didn't hang around for that discussion with the Pozzo analysts.

Did he manage to beat Carlton Palmer's record for sideways and backward passing?

Even worse than that, once you deduct the contributions of Deeney, Ighalo and Own Goals, the rest of the squad scored 10 goals in 44 games in all competitions. That is pathetic!
