"Watford have lost another member of staff to Malky Mackay’s Cardiff City, the Watford Observer understands. We understand head of football operations Iain Moody has left the Hornets and is set to head up the Bluebirds’ recruitment department. Moody will become the sixth Watford member of staff to leave the club to join Cardiff since Mackay was appointed manager on June 17. Mackay took first-team coach David Kerslake, youth-team coach Joe McBride and head of medical Richard Collinge with him to the Cardiff City Stadium and they were soon joined by Scotland international Don Cowie – who left on a free due to a contract ambiguity (see link below). At the time, Hornets chairman and legend Graham Taylor said: “Our manager made a decision to leave this football club. “Speaking on behalf of the owner and the board of Watford FC, we are both surprised and disappointed to learn of Cardiff City’s continued advances for this football club’s personnel. “Don Cowie becomes the fifth person to have joined Cardiff City from Watford this summer – when we add Malky to three members of staff and now a very talented player. “Let’s hope it stops here.” But we understand Moody has already left Watford and could formally join Cardiff as early as next week. Moody has been an integral part of Watford’s backroom staff in recent years. He was a football writer and then an agent before he joined the club as a press officer. But with time became more involved with players and their agents again and in 2007, was employed as head of operations. Moody’s role at Watford was wide ranging and was a well-like, and respected, member of the backroom staff."
In the future should this club agree a compensation package for one of our managers to go to another club, we really must have clauses put in the agreement to prevent this sort of thing happening :rant::rant: Maybe the clauses could be put in, in a similar way to add ons, e.g. If the manager comes back to poach players or staff, we should be paid an additional percentage of the original compensation for each player or staff member poached!!!
If a former press officer/head of operations was the reason for us staying up last season im seriously worried. Move on.
On the plus side if give Dychey the chance to get in his own backroom staff that want to work for him and they could be better then what we had.
i wonder how the figure of 6 compares to other clubs when they change management - is it more or less? As long as we find suitable replacements who are happy to work for us then I dont see too big a problem.
Heard that too but apparently if Elton is going to make any sort of comittment there does have to be plenty of give and take....
If I could triple or even quadruple their wages they would probably be fairly keen on working for me too.
This guy will be no loss. We just specifically hired someone to work on player recruitment, we'll be fine. Still, you have to laugh at Manky being unable to work outside his comfort zone.
MM is very narrow minded if he doesn't realise that there are other staff members out there who he can employ - ones that actually aren't employed by us.
More often than not, Managers will take the vast majority of their old backroom staff with them to a new club. It really isn't anything out of the ordinary!!
Out of interest, have you ever been involved in hiring before? If so, did you always hire people you knew for every open position? Cherry picking a specific people you worked with in the past who you know to be talented is nothing new. Making your entire hiring policy "did they work at my last employer?", however, hints at an inability to locate appropriate candidates without recruiting all your mates. Quite simply, no club outside of possibly the richest in the world (and even then...) have the absolute best backroom staff in every position inside the club. Given our financial position, I feel pretty comfortable stating that we did NOT have the best overall backroom team in the UK last season, so anyone who is engaging in wholesale poaching of the club's staff, rather than cherry picking, is clearly short on ideas.
I don't quite think thats the point being made. I have met the guy myself, when visiting the training ground last season. He was excellent, professional and very helpful. I assumed he was just a guy in an office, who shows you around then gets back on the computer and does admin. But then I saw the article on him in the observer and its clear he is an integral part of our club and the running of day to day things. A long story short, it will not be great losing this guy and if we do, I won't expect a replacement to be anywhere near as good.
Yes, I have hired somebody I've worked with before, and no, I don't always. Depends on what the business needs.
If somebody isn't happy with the company that they work for best thing they can do is leave. If the club have lost what they consider to be a valuable employee they have to ask the question why did he leave ? what are we doing wrong ? and how can we learn from this ?
fark em. I am now hoping and praying cardiff fail more so this year than ever. Our kids will show malky and his hangers on what they are missing.
