A season without development and squandering transfer values

I can't remember a season where around this time, irrespective of our league position I haven't been slightly excited by one or two of our youngsters / fringe players stepping up and playing a few games and showing themselves as prospects for next season.
This year, we have witnessed players losing form, players clearly in need of a rest and an over reliance on some clearly favoured squad members who QSF would prefer to play out of position than give one of the youngsters even a cameo subs appearance.
If Jakubiak can't even make the bench against Villa when an out of form Ighalo should have been sent home on compassionate leave one wonders when QSF will ever give someone a chance.
For that alone I'm done with him, I get the impression that he has squandered the fees for Holebas, Behram, Guedioura and others who despite how well they play one week get dropped next game for the chosen few, come selling time, those players values will have plummeted.
One would have thought prudent fiscal management is also part of a managers job.

He's not the manager. Finances are not his concern. His job is to coach the players and pick a team.

It is a profit making business UEA and in my experience, not a single employee in a profit based organization can turn round and say the bottom line is not my responsibility, of course, many organizations not in the private sector may well be able to afford to pay scant regard to finances!

So you pick the almost 32 year old who cost £1.5m, the 31 year old who cost £3m and a 31 year old in November (whose fee wasn't announced but was described by all parties as a "bargain") as your examples. All low fees, with little re-sale value to moan about their fees being wasted? Not sure you have much of a point.

As reids says, not a lot of resale value in those players anyway; I'm more concerned that they won't want to hang around next year. Holebas and Behrami in particular are players I think we need to try and keep as they are capable of contributing far more than Fores has given them the chance to. Berghuis is another who has recently given hope he can make a difference next season if he can be persuaded to stay - and unlike the examples given he is a player whose not inconsiderable value will have fallen this year.

Outside of a £25m sale - and I'm not sure anyone on our books at the moment has that kind of potential earning power for us - player sales just won't contribute meaningfully to our profit margin compared the money for ending up 17th or above each season.

Well if you read my post I said "and others"
So, to make things a little clearer for you, I would suggest the following players values have plummeted under QSF, this could be due to not being played, meeting played out of position or clearly becoming disenfranchised, however, those reasons are not a necessarily full list for the pedantic!
Given Watford don't buy over around the 6 million figure, I am of course talking about cumulative value.
    The others would include:
    Ekstrand
    Oulare
    Murray
    Belkalem
    Berghuis
    Parades
    Abdi.

I could add that the purchase of Jurado and Suarez do not at this stage appear to be prudent financially, but it seems we are awash with money so no one is as bothered as they were when a certain Nathan Ellington appeared.

Ekstrand was seriously injured, Oulare is one for the future who may or may not be a good signing, Murray wrecked his own career prior to QSF's arrival, Belkalem was surplus to requirements, Parades is not Premier standard and Abdi has played fairly regularly.

Don't think you can blame QSF for Ekstrand, Belkalem or Murray. They were all out of the first team picture long before he arrived (long term injury, poor performance and poor performance respectively).

  11. reids

    reids First Team

Ekstrand - Injured. Hardly QSFs fault.
Oulare - Value has probably gone down indeed, but I doubt he was signed to make an impact this season, so his value may or may not rise in future
Murray - Didn't really make an impact for us last season, why would he in a tougher league?
Belkalem - Wasn't named in our squad, due to having much better options available to us. Not QSFs fault.
Berghuis - Wasn't up to scratch when first arrived as was obvious to all. Now seems to be up to the required standard, next season will be a big one for him, in which his stock should rise.
Parades - Why would he play? Nyom is better in every aspect, Paredes didn't cost a lot either (£2.5m if I remember correctly) and is aging (29? 30?)
Abdi - How has his value decreased by starting 22 PL games?

What do you think Ekstrand meant by this?

Belkalem and Murry, well I didn't see them in a Watford shirt this year so I guess you saw something the rest of us didn't!

Ekstrand's contract is up this summer, there's no point in anyone pretending that he will be around next season.

  14. Arakel

Ekstrand was injured until January. What did you expect QSF to do - dump a defender who was playing well for one who wouldn't be able to play 90 minutes due to coming back from serious injury? That's clearly ridiculous. There was no space in the squad and he wasn't fit enough to displace someone.

Belkalem and Murray were out of the first team picture long before QSF turned up. They failed to feature under multiple head coaches. Blaming QSF for that makes no sense whatsoever considering neither of them were anywhere near the team before him.

    The bar has been raised.

What we all must consider is that until this season we were a Championship club occasionally producing Championship quality players and the very odd PL player, it might well take a year or two yet to polish our hidden gems to a usable standard. We certainly don't want to be starting lads that we only hope will make the grade, not only could it be bad for us it might well be catastrophic for them.

Have we played some caca football, yes.
Have some players not played enough, possibly.
    Are some players unhappy, yes
Have we got players that we shouldn't have bought, possibly
Was it Quique or someone else buying them, who knows?
Are the Pozzos happy, who knows?
Are WD sports factual or just selling papers with their news, who knows and yes.

    Now the most important currently
    Are we premier league YES
Did we reach Semi final of cup, had a nice day at Wembley until the match K.O. YES
Will Quique continue next year, who knows.

    Enjoy it you miserable sods.

Dear me! You don't know much about personnel management, why would you include him in the revised squad in January then not even put him on the bench. If he wasn't fit enough as you claim, why was he included in the revised squad?
If, and I'm saying if the player was valued by the club it is not unreasonable to expect that he is made to feel valued, believed in and has a future. To not even get a slot on the bench is quiet a damming statement of your belief in a player, and no it is not necessary to dump a defender as you claim, a good man manager would speak privately to one of the defenders and explain that Ekstrand needed some first team exposure, if you think that wouldn't go over well, ask yourself why Deeney had Ekstrand was asked to lead the team out for the warm up at Highbury. Seems Deeney has more man management capabilities then the beloved QSF!
Ok you can say Aflek is making up stories with his headline, we will only know in the summer, but in this instance, I know who I believe.

Deary me! This isn't a Coffee shop, managing a football team has nothing in common with any personnel management that you know of. For one thing a football manager might keep players in reserve hoping they'll NEVER be needed and IMO Ekstrand may well be happy about his arrangements. Don't forget Quique sees all he needs to know in training.

  19. Thailandtimmy

Really? How do you know what personnel management I know of?
It is a well known in sports that team spirit and unity is a key component of successful teams, perhaps you can enlighten me on any team that has won a major prize where there has been disharmony amongst players who lack the desire to play for each other or the club.
I guess the term "lost the dressing room" is a figment of the medias imagination, maybe looking at the difference at Liverpool pre and post Rogers.

  20. Godfather

Lol we have a squad of 25 plus as many U-21's as we can name, all will be hoping to get pitch time but not necessarily expecting it. Also some (not just the kids) will be in development and they know it.

Lost dressing rooms tend to occur when you fail to include your big signings ... and that's hardly true for us now is it? The likes of Oulaire and Berghuis were probably only signed as back up in the first place.

  21. You really don't pick your examples very well do you? And for what it's worth, I happen to know that Godfather was Chief Executive of the Institute for Personnel Management for a few weeks back in '02.
