I've woken up this morning feeling extremely nervous about our prospects for the rest of the season. After watching the shameful dross served up against Pompey and Reading followed by listening in to the heavy defeat at the hands of Birmingham, it's left me in no doubt that if we do not change things around for the better this week, WE ARE DOWN. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that we wont buy until we have sold and with Mapps and Sordell as good as gone IMO, what on earth could we possibly attract and will there be the time to do it? This isnt a knee jerk post.. the mistakes started when we replaced 27 goal Danny Graham with the woeful shot shy journeyman Chris Iwelumo and since then, the trend has continued. For me, this week is Dyche and the boards last chance to get things right and make decisions that will ensure we do not go down because surely that is objective and priority number 1. I watch and wait in hope (everything crossed)
Dyche said after the game on Saturday , that we played well , kept posession well , and casued them a few problems....this convinces me that the man tends to wear his wooly hat actually over his eyes
I wouldn't take too much notice of the press conferences, as it's normally just a sugar-coated PR excerise. I am sure Dyche knows that the players he has brought into the club, on an attacking level, have all pretty much bombed, but he's hardly going to admit that. He knows that the quality has to improve, but I just hope they have learnt their lessons, that journeymen are not always the answer.
bringing players in like iwulemo was always going to be a big gamble. Especially the goal record he has, which everyone knows is woefull
Totally agree, we desperately need some1 not just on the left wing, but some1 who keeps hold of the ball and doesn't hoof it every time. Kightly did exactly that and actually challenged defenders by running at them, allowing Sordell and Deeney to drift into space waiting for a through ball. It really ticked me off in the last 3 games especially when ****inson and Hodson get the ball and ping the ball up to the front men. The balls are not accurate enough and leaves Denney and Sordell with too much work to do. We have a midfield there for a reason so use it. From what I have seen Hogg, Eustace ad Buaben can pick a nice through ball, which is exactly the delivery that our front men want to get on the end of.
Dyche did say we would have to rely on loan players (presumably he knows in order to get the top price we will need to `go to the wire on sales in the window`). I have real fear if Mapps goes, and Marv will be difficult to replace. This could be a nervous time - particularly if McGinn & Tiny are not in evidence.
His goalscoring record isn't actually bad, got double figures nearly every season for his past few clubs. This move just hasn't worked at all.
In reality we need to (only) probably win 5 or 6 though, and a couple of draws we'll be ok. The sooner the better though and the next 3 v Millwall, Barnsley & Forest are instantly winnable with the injection of some creativity/goal scoring prowess. Am sure Dyche knows all this anyway and the club our doing something about it. Just hope that Dyche doesnt think lengthy periods of keeping possession in the middle third of the pitch constitutes creativity!
I think in this window, we will almost certainly be looking to bring in loan players and not permanent ones. Firstly, McGinn will be hopefully fit enough to play in the near future and he is a star in the making. Number one priority has to be a striker. In effect, we have sold Danny Graham and replaced him with no one. Deeney is playing in DG's position and was already at the club. We have wasted money on Iwelumo, who only warms the bench. He's one of the top earners at the club. Garner can't even get on the bench, so looks like another poor signing, and the punt on the Beattie loan didn't work out either. We lost Cowie, and replaced him with a backup/development player (Forsyth) and have asked him to do a man's job, which is very unfair. On the other flank, Yeates was a bit of a punt, and although he's nowhere near as good as Buckley, he has done some good things without pulling up any trees, and tends to be very inconsistant. You can see money has been spent, but it's been wasted on too many cheap players, whereas fewer, but classier performers may have been the better thing to do.
Dyche didn't seem to be in any hurry to get new players in.. BTW Where is Sordell going if he is "as good as gone"?
Another reason to worry he might not be the right man for the job. If he thinks the current squad as it is is good enough he's deluded.
After spenind well over a hundred notes watching that ******ous performance , i think i would prefer a little honesty , other wise he just comes across as clueless
I agree, I would prefer honesty also, but if he was honest, he would be undermining himself to a degree. He has to put a positive spin on things, it just goes with the job. Very few managers actually open up in a press conference. Redknapp, Di Canio, Holloway are exceptions to the rule, but most come from the same media school and dont deviate from the rule of actually giving a straight and honest answer. There was a survey recently which said football managers would make very good politicians, as they have to navigate around awkward questions without losing face. I think Dyche is pretty good at this.
Balls , to fly in the face of what 18000 people saw , shows cluelesness , rather than media savvy IMO
Remember how before the recent run of games everyone jumped off the deep end and declared us doomed and said Dyche should be sacked (myself included). Dyche showed that he understood the problem and rectified it with the signings of Kightly and Nyron. Lets give him time to do the same again. We wont go down, we'll finish 18.
I agree, he managed to turn it around before and I think he's learnt a lot since coming into the job. Get the right players in, then I think we'll be ok, fail to do that, then I don't think even Fergie could save us.
The current team will get us relegated, simple as that really. If we don't invest now it's going to cost a hell of a lot more when we're paying wages we can't afford in League One.
Ok enoughs enough... sitting back listening and reading the uttter B******s thats coming out of the mouth of Dyche and the club at the mo I'm feeling that my thread here is becomming more relevant by the second. Its FRIDAY for FFS. How many days till the close of the transfer window? Zero ambition. Reports of lack of money resulting in us missing out on targets.... we are actually proper f*****d right now and desperate need of quality players or we go down. It's that simple. It's utterly irrelevant IMO if Mapps and Sordell move on... we need a goalscorer and TWo wide players. Two quality QUICK wide players be it on loan or permanents. My worry is this Ross Wilson hasnt exactly covered himself in glory since replacing (was it) Stephenson chap who f*****d off to Brighton for a bit. WHAT'S LINED UP? I stand by my original post.. this week is MAKE OR BREAK... S**T OR BUST. Let's stop f*****g about and fix what's been clearly wrong in the side for the best part of 6 months. GET A F******G MOVE ON DYCHE AND WFC.. QUIT WITH THE B******T EXCUSES!!
While I agree that having a couple of quick wingers with reliable delivery and a goalscorer would be great, failing to get them need not spell the end of Watford's championship stay. The question is whether the manager can find a system that makes the players he has got play as an effective unit. I can't watch the team this season but it sounds to me as if it is trying to play like a team with two good wingers and a target man for Sordell to work off. That is patently not what the team has and perhaps will not find for the rest of the season. But it's not the only approach - high quality distribution can be effective even when not matched with pace (think Neil Ardley's midfield conversion days, or Andy Reid in his Charlton pomp, or the likes of Gera and Buszaky), but that would involve a radical re-think (and quick).
The loan window is open long after the January window shuts though I think. I agree that the sooner we get players in the better, but we do have longer than this week to do it.
First off... did you not have your weetabix this morning ? Secondly... The past 6 months have not been that bad, we even had a unbeaten run during this period and apart from the last 2/3 games in my eyes we have been playing well and improving. I agree that players need to be found and a few of the duds need to move on.. but this is not going to happen (ideal players in and all the duds moving on). The club is currently trying to improve its image (on and off the pitch) and with the recent posts from Bass and Dyche about the clubs transfer stance i think in all we are trying to be stronger in the market and not get taking for a ride. We have signed the odd gem for next to nothing... I belive we are good enough to stay up... and that we have a team that can do this... a loan signing to help the team would be helpfull... but i would leave any major signings till the summer when the club has more time and a better idea of what is needed to be brought in (as we look to lose sord and mapps in that period and the money from those sales would be a large transfer kitty). Just my two cents on the matter..... and look i didnt need to swear so much either (jk)
Wouldn't say do or die but if we lose to Millwall and Forest we're deep, deep, deep in the ****. I think we have some money to spend. Jonny Hayes has 6 months left on his contract and plays for ICT, surely we can afford him? And Collins from Shrews too, plus 1/2 loan signings in the attacking department and I think we'll be fine.
I think tonights game will be the turning point, 4-0 to the hornets and so will begin the playff push. Not.
They have to actually want to come ofcourse. Its not just about paying whatever it takes to being any old chap in. King James - Maybe we could get Sol Campbell in eh? The fact we've gone in for players suggests some ambition has been shown but we aren't in a position to offer mega bucks and don't forget Dyche was allowed to bring in quite a lot of fairly average signings last summer...
And the point about tonights game is when we are motivated and select the right players we can play decent football. Yes you could argue that it was a cup game and 24 shots without a goal proves we require replacements but I don't think we need too many, just someone to assit Marvin upfront and a decent winger. Looking at performances tonight we may already have those??
Anyone else notice sordells tweet tonight re not knowing where he'll be tomorrow? (ie monday) #justsaying
