Liverpool have announced that that their new stadium plans have been put on hold due to the credit crunch!!! If a team like Liverpool are struggling financially, it is hardly surprising that little old Watford are in a similar boat, is it?
There are two points to be made here: 1stly one side of their current Stadium (yes they have the right to call it that) does not resemble a derelict cow shed. 2ndly in terms of cost I think you will find that the New Anfield is a little more expensive than the Vic Rd makeover which they are having to fund without help from a Health Trust.
All their money is borrowed anyway isn't it? Hence their want to sell up to the far east consortium?! Maybe I have it wrong?
We're not in the same boat as Liverpool; we've got a big screen and despite all their millions and legendary ground, they don't!
No, it was ringfenced for the development of the ground. They said that quite clearly in autumn 06 Doug. http://www.watfordfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10400~904050,00.html No mention of the East Stand specifically. Those numbers relate to the cost of the whole redevelopment.
Then the club have been conned. A lick of paint and some plasma screens do not cost £3m. That money was clearly meant for the east stand, and I have not seen 3m's worth of development so far.
I don't think they've said it's all gone. How much do you think the extention to the Rookery cost? And the refit of the Upper Rous corporate facilities? And the installation of a director's box in the same stand? And now the new South West building? None of those involved just a 'lick of paint'.
