It is getting ridiculous really. All of the greats from the late eighties up to this millenium have been doped. Spend some attention on the ones playing now AND on the youth development. That's where it all goes wrong.

I'll be at the Marlins home opener against the Mets on Monday 31st and the 3rd game between them on Wed 2nd April when I'm over in Florida from next week...can't wait!

Live MLB is the only thing that makes me subscribe to Setanta/NASN, looks like it's going to take pride of place as my "summer sport" now there's no British involvement in Euro 2008.

Interesting thing to note about the two sports soccer and baseball...
youth participation is massively declining for baseball, and soccer is totally dominant over all other activities in childhood participation here.

Furthermore, a friend of mine pointed out that the participation of African Americans in baseball has gone way down. The best young players are Dominican and Japanese it seems. I suppose that has a lot to do with the massive popularity of basketball and the dominance of football here.

I'm going to a baseball game tomorrow...A's vs the Angels in Anaheim.

    Yay.

I am not much of a baseball fan, but the company is paying, and my boss and my boss's boss are pretty much alcoholics, so there is a good chance I will get to drink a few beers. So I got that to look forward to.

If anything remotely interesting happens, I will post it.

But just pencil me in for not posting anything.

aaaah baseball. a sport thats actually worse than cricket

  10. Fitz

I'll say marginally better if only because it ends in one day.

  11. fan

that is something i never gave consideration too. mostly because i have no idea how cricket actually works. i can only stand 5 mins of watching/listening to someone explain it and i'm gone

I'm here at the game now...mercifully the beer is plentiful because the entertainment is, well, not.

I keep trying to draw my coworkers into conversations about soccer.

    Jesus this sucks.

given the level of drugs in the game there must be something recreational somewhere

gigantic neck muscles and a shriveled ***** are not what I had in mind. A quick puke in the bathroom is more like it.

It's 5 to 3 in the 6th, after a 2 run homerun. The home team Angels are winning. It is 2:30 and I have had 5 beers. Anyone know what that means?

  16. fan

it means you passed your three drink threshold and drunk muck shall run asunder?

It's four and yes I am on dangerous ground. Another homerun...6-4 LA.

Will you be continuing the binge at a nearby bar following the game?

It's not like that here...you gotta drive 20 minutes to get anywhere here. That said, I am due to meet a friend nearby for dinner and oxycodones after the game. I am probably kidding about the oxy.

    Ah I see. Fair do's.

i'm glad to hear its only a probably. when you come to tell people amazing anecdotes in 10 years, the time you got drunk on company money and crushed some oxycodones in a french restaurant will stand out!

    UPDATE:
    Baseball still sucks.

Someone asked me during the Galaxy match viewing party at Hermosa Beach which baseball team I supported.

It was very easy to answer: I hate baseball.

It's looking like the Phillies will make it to the big show having secured a 3-1 lead last night.

In the AL Ch. series the Tampa Bay Rays lead the Red Sox 2-1 and that series is still very open.

My money's on the Rays though.

A lot of excitement about the Dodgers here is going down the drain.

I like that there are several teams who usually don't get to the playoffs in contention now, and at least one of them will go to the World Series. Where they can be crowned

    WORLD CHAMPIONS!!!

Alright, so the Dodgers got bounced by the Phillies who are in the World Series.

The Red Sox forced a game 7 against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, so it's just about set. The Rays seem to be a little bit better of a team, but nobody wants to see a Phillies/Rays World Series...ratings will be sad as hell.

I wish the baseball season was 1/3 as long as it is, then I might pay attention to it a little.

We have a yank in the office who is a Philadelphia fan for everything. He is gutted that he isn't back in the US as the Phillies are in the World Series.

Too bad for him...Philly fans are devoted, though that devotion is generally translted in other cities as being low life scumbags. It's been a long long long time since a Philly team has won a championship. I think it was the 1983 NBA championship with Dr J. The 76ers were in the NBA finals but lost in 2002 or so.

Tampa Bay Rays Vs. Philidelphia Phillies

Tampa Bay had never made it into the Post-Season before now.
Now they've made it to the World Series, in their first ever play off attempt.

Phillies have been underachieving for a while now, and have nothing to show for a long time.
Will that change after their defeat of the Dodgers in the Championship Series?

    How they got here:

    Tampa Bay Rays:

Finished Top of American League East Division (97-65)

Chicago White Sox (Best Of Five Series) 3-1

Boston Red Sox (Best Of Seven Series) 4-3

    Philidelphia Phillies

Finished Top of National League East (92-70)

Milwaukee Brewers (Best Of Five Series) 3-1

Los Angeles Dodgers (Best Of Seven Series) 4-1

    Schedule
(all games 8pm ET or 1am GMT)

    Game 1 - Phillies @ Rays Wednesday 22nd October
    Game 2 - Phillies @ Rays Thursday 23rd October
    Game 3 - Rays @ Phillies Saturday 25th October
    Game 4 - Rays @ Phillies Sunday 26th October
    Game 5 - Rays @ Phillies Monday 27th October*

This is a difficult one to predict I feel. The Phillies have been rock steady in their post season and the rays went to 7 games before beating the second pair of sox.

I'm going to go with the Rays though as they have homefield advantage in the first game and thus one more than the Phillies in the best of 7 series. Mind you - I haven't kept up in post season as I root for 3 teams and neither made it (A's, Giants and Twins).

Doubt can tell, due to my fantastically neutral writing, but I am Rays all the way...
Saw them three times when I was in florida, just couldn't get enough.

So for me... a Rays win.

Got to be the philles, they have had more rest, and a better bullpen, they really only need to get to the 8th inninng with a lead and they have one the game.

  33. HORNETCP

although, the team with the longer rest for the last two years hasn't come out on top... and the rays have shown alot of class in coming top of a very very tough division.

Although, I love the rays, so I would say that!

  34. krisvad

And it doesn't help... apparently, as the Rays lost the opener at home 3-2.

And the Rays lost the series 4-1. Not exactly close.
