It's about time Gino took a punt on an up-and-coming youngster from the lower divisions. Wilmott is the only one I can recall in the Pozzo era.

Andre Gray is going to be willing to move to Plymouth?

With his semi show biz lifestyle he doesn’t seem very Devon to me.

I suspect we'll see a lot more of this now, post-Brexit. It's going to be harder to bring in players from Europe.

If the funds are there after the Deulofeu sale then throw a million or two at Plymouth and see what their answer is. Either he bombs and we make our money back in loan fees or we have a gem on our hands.

Erm what ? Think you need to look back over one ground. I started a thread stating there was plenty on talent in the lower leagues which we choose to ignore season after season. See Toney.

We may be hamstrung at the moment given our finances. Which is a shame. The owner seems quite content to bleed money. From giving older players expensive long term contracts when conventional wisdom sees most clubs do the opposite. Bring in loans that were not Ivic wanted I am certain and then have one sent back and the other left up in the air. Again money down the drain.

Then the constant turnover of managers and their staff. Safe to say that has cost a shed load of money. It is a shame because now is a buyers market for those that have cash to spend. Not many clubs granted. But it is galling to see the likes of Norwich and Brentford hoovering up starlets in the lower parts of the pyramid. Both have been then very successful in selling them on for far more money. Not the case going forward I suspect but still an excellent model.

Both have been looking at youngsters at MK Dons, Bolton , Exeter and Peterborough. I suspect these teams by need or habit have decent academies. We are unable to do so now. In the past the scheme with Andy Scott was jettisoned. Prematurely or perhaps Andy left because his ideas were not considered. We really need to up our game domestically scouting wise as once was the case scouring everywhere. And keep improving the Academy and there are signs that it may start to bear fruit soon.

Jephcott is the fox in the box. Needs to learn to play against bigger, more clever and stronger defenders to see how he pans out and be more aggressive. He is not incredibly quick but he knows where to go to in the box. His build up play is not great either buy he has shown flashes of learning seeing his highlights. Who's to say he does not kick on and develop like Deeney did. Deeney I remember was derided for quite a while for not being the striker we are looking for. Again Jephcott may not work out. But that is the risk you take on younger players for relatively small sums.

If we can get him for a million then do it. Anything over unlike Toney is a more calculated risk but it is time that our scouting department work harder on sourcing players from the pyramid who are young, hungry, have potential to develop and clear ability instead of this searching PL academies to fill the u23 squad most of whom are not on an upward trajectory but on a downwards one.

Would love to see a young hungry domestic player with a point to prove - even if he turns out to be crap - compared to some strutting mediterranean peacock

Ignoring your passive aggressive nonsense and the fact this one is just a rumour are you actually happy with what the Pozzos are doing right now? Happy with what they have done over the last 18 months? You’re a big fan so interested to hear your views.

Yes absolutely delighted with how the last 18 months have gone. Of course I’m not and I doubt any Watford fan is but I feel there are more people to blame for me than just the owners.
I did feel that the summer after the cup final was where we made mistakes and after that it’s difficult to recover. Unfortunately we also then got the pandemic which along with reduced revenue has been a real major issue. We are where we are though and I can see the players that have gone or are going making sense. Most wanted to leave. Maybe we could have got more money but equally having a player who is desperate to leave is pointless.
They have made mistakes but every decision now seems to be greeted with a load of hate for Gino Pozzo simply because people don’t agree with it. Look at the reaction to Quina possibly leaving then go back to the match threads when he played. He was pretty much disappointing yet now he might leave Pozzo is an idiot. Teams that go down will always think they could have done more and I’m sure Norwich and Bournemouth fans are very critical of their owners because supporters always know more about running a business than them.
In short, Gino has made mistakes but there are lots of things that have happened and not all can contributed to him

Which mistakes do you lay at the door of Pozzo? You talk about it in general terms but let’s have specifics.

No upgrade at the back a couple of years ago and the long contracts for players over 30. Neither of these make sense to me.

It seems to me that a lot of UK football fans haven't yet caught on to the reality of post-Brexit football.

With overseas recruitment now very difficult the Jephcotts and the Goslings will almost certainly be the new shape of things for the majority of signings, at least for clubs not in the Premier League. I suspect it's just going to serve to make the gap between the Premier League and the Championship wider, but that remains to be seen.

I’ve seen things to this effect said repeatedly on here, but the new work permit rules are fairly liberal. Per the rules, we can sign pretty much anyone we want from a Big 5 league, and all players that have played a fair amount in smaller leagues like Belgium or Holland. Also, a lot more latitude for South American players, especially if they’ve played in one of the continental competitions.

Will cost money and considering we don’t spend money on transfers in the championship this is a complete no goer. I do expect another absolute out of the blue signing of a youth player we have no need for right now, most likely a CB or another GK. Probably lose Sarr and someone else equally as important.

    All hail Gino!

Alternatively, it'll probably be like the Grimes rumour.

It'll be fed to us to make it look like we are interested in a striker, but we 'wont be able to do a deal' and this rumour will just fade away.

£3.5m for a player who has had a decent 6-8 months is too much.

I want a striker who knows where the goal is as much as anyone - but they are over-valuing him IMO. I’d want to see goal scoring over a much longer period for that type of fee - especially from that level.

He’s obviously worth that to them because he’s in form and their hope to get a playoff spot maybe - they will want their pockets lined to forego that by selling him.

Yet to be convinced he’s not just an average striker who’s in form. If he keeps the form going until the end of the season, and we don’t go up, I’d look at it again. But I wouldn’t pay more than £1.5m for him now in all honesty.

First rule of negotiation: Start high when selling, start low when buying.

I suspect they'd settle for a lot less than £3.5m, depending on how desperate they are for cash right now (with covid & all that)

Yeah exactly. Publicly state you want £3.5mil. We will get him for £2-2.5mil. He won’t want Plymouth to turn us down. Championship football with the potential of premier league.
