I expect a lowly La Liga side will fancy taking him if we go down. He’d want the move so we’d probably have to let him go, but I don’t think he’s done enough yet to get the maximum value.
Probably a loan with an obligation to buy at a set price if certain objectives are met.

JMHO but I think he'll be here, as will Suarez, and barring a big offer Estupinan also. The Champ is a great stepping stone for their careers... as it was for Ighalo... and as the club will happily sell to them.

Ighalo had only really had success at Segunda B level though, was very mediocre in Serie A, whereas Estupinan has been great in La Liga this year, and the two Colombians are proven Segunda level strikers (with Cucho having a modicum of success in the top flight)

Athletic suggest he doesn't have a work permit and won't until at least January.

Gray, Deeney and Mediocrity it is.

Don't footballers only have to play for 2 years to qualify for dual nationality, which he has done, so wont need a wp?

Besides, it's not like he's some teenager wet behind the ears, he's 22 and has three years experience in Spain and a full international cap, if Richarlison could get a work permit, I don't see why Cucho wouldn't

I don’t think he needs one. Penaranda got in with dual nationality Spanish passport. Simple route for Cucho, Suarez, Estupinan (if it turns out the latter isn’t the greatest ever player and sold to Barca for £200M)

Posted this is the championship thread as we were discussing him.

    Here it is again.

This is what Cucho literally said in a interview in May of this year. 2 months ago

“They have given me incredible confidence,"

"I recently had the opportunity to renew and when you do, it is because they want you to be part of their project.

“They have let me know that they intend to count on me for next year. I'm not confirming anything, but there is that interest and that possibility of being there. I am very grateful and after several years belonging to Watford it is time to wear their shirt."

Why would the player himself say that? Unless we’ve royally messed it up like Gueye, then I fully expect to see him. Work permit no issue at all.

Pedro got a work permit and he's a wee nipper, would be absolutely astonishing if Cucho didn't get one

Well this is the Pozzos we are talking about!

He plays hard to get, he smiles from time to time,
It'd only take the premier league to change his mind.

Some people have suggested that 'Cucho' Hernandez (who was 21 years old in April) is waiting for a Spanish passport, which is the reason that he will not be able to join Watford until January. Perhaps I have missed something, but I have a question. How will a Spanish passport help Hernandez to obtain a work permit after 1st January 2021 when the U.K. will not longer be subject to E.U. regulations?

It won't, but it will make him a more attractive buy for Spanish and, I presume, other European sides as he won't take up a 'foreign' slot in their squads. By waiting those 6 months it should help increase any future transfer fee. ie., when he's sold on January 2nd 2021.

I don’t think the authorities have announced the post-Brexit work permit rules yet. But I imagine there will some bias towards EU players already on the books of clubs, otherwise it’ll create havoc.

You may be correct, but it does not make much sense (if you are correct) that Cucho has visited Watford's training complex twice during the past season and that he wrote on Twitter that he expected to join Watford next season. Perhaps Watford's relegation has changed the situation. There seemed to be a general expectation that he was the young loanee who was most likely to play for Watford next season and Adam Leventhal reinforced that view by suggesting in the Athletic that Cucho may not be able to join until January because of a work permit issue.

I was under the impression that no preference would be given to E.U. citizens, but there is a lack of clarity. Perhaps Cucho's situation will be different - as you suggested - because he is already on Watford's books, but who knows?

The player was injured when he joined Mallorca, or at least recovering from injury/surgery. I'm pretty sure at least one of the occasions he turned up at London Colney was to aid his recovery or to monitor how his recovery was going.

And I thought the tweet/message about joining us for next season was either deleted or played down by Cucho himself soon after?

We'll find out soon enough when he either joins someone on loan in the coming weeks or is announced in our squad list. If it's a loan and for the season then I won't hold out much hope of him coming here to be honest but if it's just a 6 month deal then I'd say the WP/passport issues will have been real and he'd come here in January.

Trying to second guess what is in store for our loan players is nigh on impossible, so I'll just wait until some obscure journalist in Spain, Italy or Belgium tells us which clubs they're playing for or their names appear in the forthcoming seasons squad list*.

*Not really - I'm now going to go through all the individual player search pages I have open and press refresh at least twice on each one in the hope I can find something out!

**Edit: No news on any of 'em.

The UK gov told the FA, PL and EFL to come up with a shared proposal. So far they have not been able to agree on anything.

The FA want to treat all foreign players the same and reduce the total number in a squad (increase HG) in exchange they will sign off on all work permits for players regardless of origin. The PL wants things left as they are. Not sure what the EPL wants.

In the absence of an agreement I guess the existing rules remain.

Being reported he’s about to join Getafe on a 1 year loan, no option to buy.

Cucho Hernández has arrived in Madrid ahead of joining Getafe on a season-long loan. There is no option to buy clause in the deal. [via

Yes, just read it. Good news that we are still keeping hold of him. It's the WP issue that's preventing him from joining, which is frustrating, as he'd be brilliant in the Champ.

The Champo is a great stepping stone for them but if they have no Champo experience, they aren't good enough anyway.
