Looks like Coventry have won the race.

Coventry City have met the release clause valuation for Barnsley midfielder Callum Styles, personal terms to be agreed #PUSB

Wasn't that the 250K that Gino was debating over when we were first interested? Anyway, glad he got a club. With the system VI is playing it's doubtful he would of fitted in, but saying that having extra bodies is never a bad thing.

Good signing for them, don't think he will be able to replace Hamer but a good body to have.

Supposedly he was playing against us last weekend. I only just remembered.

To think some here were really disappointed we didn't push the boat out to sign him last summer. I stuck to the position that "l don't see that he's what we need." as he'd cost a fair bit of money while not being an upgrade on anything and would probably end up on the bench.

Turns out most Sunderland fans now have the same sort of opinion of him from his spell with them based on their typical recent comments about him on their forum:

"We don't need to sign squad options for fees. We need to sign improvements. If he is a CM, we already have half a dozen players than can play there with similar results. When we are being so financially rigid I'm not sure how we can justify signing him for a fee simply because he could be a squad player.its a wage and fee that is taking away from more glaring issues and lack of depth in other roles"

"He can’t tackle. He doesn’t handle the ball well under pressure. He may have made a couple of 5 yard passes but we don’t need some one to do that. People will cite his versatility but he’s been 5hite at both full back and wing back. If we sign him it’s a total waste of the apparent limited funds we have."

"Very decent 4th choice left back who doubles up as 6th choice central midfielder and is probably only 3rd choice left wing back when we need to switch to scraping for points against teams like Millwall at home next season"

"Agree if funds are that limited why waste a chunk on a player that lets be honest if we stay relatively injury free he won't get in at full back and I'd be hoping we are looking at better than him as a midfield signing"

"Can any of those defending him explain what it is he’s good at, as I’m yet to see it"

"this bloke has played in different positions to not a particularly great level."

"Can't believe how slow styles is. For that goal he has a few yards head start yet barely gets back in the box by the ti e their lad hits it."

Well lots of players don't live up to the hype and expectation I guess.

We've had a few - including this season!

And some who people don't think are worth signing turn out to be decent or do a job.

    Livermore for example.

Football would be pretty dull if every signing turned out as expected.

Livermore was better than Styles, for sure. And he was more the typical destroyer-type DM which Ismael had a clear preference for.

So Ismael and the club made the right call.

Bit of a strange thing to bring back up.

I also dont agree with you.

Even if he's not had a great season I think there have been many time this season we could have done with having a player being able to fill in multiple positions.

We had to persist with TDB being torn to shreds at right back for about 10 games. We also had to deal with Morris (who is not up to this level) at LB way too many times.

Were there any people on here who were ‘really disappointed’ we didn’t sign him? Lots of people suggested him and wanted us to sign him - but I don’t remember anyone losing their mind because we didn’t.

If they wanted us to sign him then it follows that they'd be disappointed we didn't.

It's true that there hadn't been the massive meltdown about it as there have with some other transfer decisions so perhaps the "really" was unnecessary, but there was certainly plenty of disappointment. Here are some examples:

Hogg-Deeney disappointed: "Shame, there are areas of greater need, but Styles would walk into our team"

reids frustrated: "Bit frustrating watching lots of players we've been linked with move - Camara to Charleroi, Hayden to QPR, Styles to Sunderland whilst not strengthening ourselves."

skyla complaining: "Gino was squabbling over 250k when we were on the verge of signing Calum Styles"

Goldenorn had been really keen on him: "Would be buzzing to get this across the line asap."

Malteser disappointed: "Expectations were also raised with usually reliable sources implying we were going to sign Styles and the South Korean striker (and Lewis). Those expectations were soon dashed"

simplemash: "Unrelated but have you heard any more on Styles? Wish we’d just pay the release clause already."

Chumlax thinking it absurd that we were: "steadfastly refusing to pay the £2m that would be needed to secure a current proven performer in Callum Styles"

dynamo considering if because the club seemingly weren't willing to pay the too high £2mil release clause for Styles that we were just low-balling them: "a case of the club repeating it's old trick of trying to low ball the selling club to get the player because we seemingly cant help ourselves"

And it will probably be the same this summer and the summer after.

It's not as if we have done a whole lot better without him tbh..

And might have been more useful than a TDB at right back or Lewis at left back.

    We'll never know.

Considering Styles is left-footed and his versatility only extends to the left side of the pitch, then he would have been of zero use for playing instead of TDB at RB.

From what I've seen of him and the views of Sunderland fans he's probably about the same level of ability as Morris (while being 2 years older). Sunderland fans also seem to think full-back is his most useless position. So £2mil on a 24 year-old to play LB while being no better than Morris would have been a complete joke.

  27. lowerrous

We do know, because Sunderland fans think he's barely good enough to be a back-up LB for them, so he won't be good enough to be starting for us.

He also 100% would not have been more useful than TDB at RB considering he is left-footed and his versatility does not extend to RB.

Haven't seen Styles enough at Sunderland to make an opinion. Imo though he's still a decent option at LWB if TC stays with that formation. All dependent on how much he costs.
Would rather they went for someone like Burrows at Peterborough, especially if they don't get promoted. I believe his contract is up in the Summer. Very good figures all round this season.

Just had a quick look and he's played on the right 16 times in his career, so he's clearly capable of it. Also as TDB was absolutely useless there! He probably would have been an improvement.

Just because he was cack at Sunderland (who have been rubbish since Mowbray left) doesn't mean he wouldn't have been good here.

Saying Livermore was the better signing is even funnier as we were told by West Brom fans that he was passed it, and he turned out to be one of our better players this season.

Some fans opinion of players is not always good.
Some of our fans think Bayo is the way forward . Seriously.

  32. lowerrous

The majority of them don't think that though.

It's true many fans aren't the best judges of a player (some posts here would be a fair case in point), however, it's easier and less prone to errors for them to compare one player in their squad to another player in their squad when evaluating their respective ability. i.e. it's easier for fans to compare two players who they have seen playing for their team in the same season week in week out, then it is for them to try and weigh-up how they might do compared to a hypothetical unknown future signing.

Given that most Sunderland fans think that he's worse than what they already have in all the positions he typically plays, and that Sunderland are also a very middling Champ side, it doesn't bode well. Sure, you can sometimes have players revitalised at a different club, but Styles had looked pretty mediocre both at Barnsley lately and now at Sunderland, so the odds of him rather having being good here seem even lower.

Pointing out that Pozzo has a history of trying to low ball signings, then walking away before renewing interest isnt the same as disappointment fyi

Disappointment would be our performance today.

Also, what a strange thing to bring up a week after playing Sunderland... its going to be a long summer on this forum I suspect

  35. lowerrous

Your post seemed to very much indicate that you were disappointed Pozzo did appear to try and supposedly "low ball" Barnsley rather than just stumping up his £2mil release clause. And it's good that he didn't bother, as opposed to paying that for him.

It took me that long for the fact that Styles had even been playing to pop back in to my head, given he was so anonymous during the actual match. I don't know what the exact trigger for the recollection now was tbh.
