Sorry Mr Pedant is back in town! but i think you may have missed one. Promotion from div 4 to div 3 in season 59/60. We amassed 57 points that season that would amount to 81 points in today's terms. I also made up a table the other day comparing our promotion seasons and our current standing. I thought it was interesting that we are 4 goals shy of the lowest number of goals scored in a promotion season.. but we have also currently conceded 6 goals fewer than in any season in the clubs history.
Looking at the stats for 1998/99, while it can't be denied what a magnificent job GT did, it's no wonder we got relegated by some distance the following season.
That 1998/99 team rode a wave, but don't forget we went into the Premier League with essentially a third tier team and Des Lyttle.
GNW didn't feature until later on in the season due to the assault by a Sunderland player in January 1999, Mooney was not PL level. Losing Johnno to injury was a blow but there were rumours about a move to Leeds anyway. Even without our injuries we would not have avoided relegation that season, we may have posted 30 points but still not enough.
Mooney on form and at his peak was PL level. Like Ighalo on his purple patch was good enough when people thought otherwise. Mooney propelled us into the play-offs and was certainly on form and at his heights before his injury. Seem to recall a few other injuries too such as Wright.
