If only he could play 10% as well as he talks, he'd be knocking them in for England.

    Totally ineffective.

Absolutely spot on. Thinks it’s all about him. I hated the interview after Stoke where he focussed attention on himself rather than the team. He’s the ******* captain for Christ sake, act like one and talk about the team.
I’ve always backed him but we clearly need him out of the team now. This is no way for a captain to behave. We were **** Troy and you were one of the worst

    I agree.
I knew there was no salvation when I heard him talk about himself in the third person.
How on earth he is allowed to do it is beyond me.
    Has Gino no backbone?

The big Coventry CB won't get many easier games. Gave Deeney absolutely nothing - he really is useless.

Try 5 years, he's been a useless ****head pretty much the whole time, but for 3 1/2 years of that time, we at least had enough about us elsewhere on the pitch to allow the club and fans to put their collective heads in the sand

Troy's keen insight is wasted in those interviews. He should be on some godawful radio show dispensing his pearls of wisdom.

God that stinks, just further confirms why things go wrong with managers so quickly. They all want to play a style that renders Troy's style useless hence why it never happens as he can't be dropped.

Just comes across as a bully now, Pedro doesn't seem to have any bond with him, nor does Sarr. He should be a positive influence on them but can't see it.

I loved Troy and really want him to leave before I start to hate him.

Many players are ****, many footballer are arrogant people, but the way this club bends over for Troy is emabaresssing. Every week that goes by I feel less and less of a Watford fan

People were crying last week when he didn't do an interview, this week he does an interview saying we were **** and still people moan.

This is a bang average squad without any style or method to it. Yesterday I saw Deeney clearing corners, sitting in midfield, hitting the bar with a header and even picking up balls wide right at one point. It is an absolute *********** of individuals playing for themselves.

It's not that he gave the interview that's the problem, it's just that he's saying all the wrong things...complaining that we're not tailoring our 'style' enough to him when he's proved an utter failure this season, complaining at the state of the pitch when Cov managed it fine. We have strikers with ability, we have, well, one midfielder with ability, yet because Big Man Troy has to start every game, we shunt them to one side and jeapordise any chance we have of getting promotion

I'm looking forward to when his biggest fans can shove it in our faces with a "He made space for himself, and took his chance really well, that's 3 (non-pen) goals in last 10 starts".

I don't want him "sitting in midfield"!

  14. leighton buzzard horn

Quite. I'd like him in the box and burying plenty of opportunities coming his way. Whilst we are creating nothing and he is scoring nothing, penalties aside, it is major frustration and something that means we are likely to end up mid table. I don't really care who does the creating or the scoring but at the moment none of them are stepping up to the plate.

We need a striker and someone creative, a modern day Abdi and Vydra.

The one game he hasn't started since coming back to fitness was when Ivic was a lame duck, Ivic had a pop, and Duxbury came out and defended him...no matter how badly he plays, no matter who we have to sacrifice, he's always in the team

Yes, but that doesn't mean he has to start - for me it shows the lack of squad depth. Who else could we have? Sarr looked lost when he played as a striker at the start of the season, Perica is made of plasticine, Success is a Baileys guzzling donkey. The only striker any good is Pedro. That shouldn't be the case and the blame for that lies with whoever is responsible for recruitment.

As is the Watford way I'll always rather have limited players giving it their all rather than more talented players being half arsed such as Capoue when he played (turned up...) this season.

Perica has been injured lately, but he's started, what, 2 league games all season? He's still been chronically underused, and as JP, I get he can't play every game, but that doesn't mean we absolutely have to rotate him every second game. Perica may be fit again, but you can bet your bottom dollar it's gonna be Deeney and JP at the weekend, and then Deeney and Gray in the next game...

What is Deeney meant to be then? Is he a "sitting in midfield", type of player, ora "winner of backward headers" man? Maybe a "defender from corners" or a maybe he's there to "pick up balls wide on the right" kinda player. Is that what you think he should be doing for £70k a week?

He's meant to be our centre forward for christ's sake, and he's totally useless at it!

Exactly, he's bad enough at goalscoring apart from when it's a free hit 12 yards out. I don't want him roaming the pitch and being useless at other things as well. I don't know why the guy refuses to get in the box.

Odd that as every other team apart from us manages to get someone,be it a forward or a midfielder on the penalty spot or edge of the area,Mount just now for Chelsea.

I’d like our £40k + midfielders to be sending our £60k a week winger on countless runs per game so he can deliver a load of quality balls and our £70k a week striker to bury a few of those chances. At the moment none of that is happening and our formation is a jumbled mess all over. If one part of that simplistic chain isn’t working then it should be changed by a head coach. If the head coach can’t change it then change the head coach. If a series of unsuitable appointments are made at head coach then you are...where Watford are right now.

I've just seen Gray's interview, and then I see what Deeney says, and I hope it is Gray gets out of this slump first. He's an arse, and he is has been useless, just like Deeney (apart from penalties) but I think Gray puts a lot of effort in each game and I think he badly wants to get out of this slump, it is his lack of ability and a lack of luck that is stopping him from scoring.

Deeney has a lack of ability too, but I don't see the effort there often enough. I think he just blames everybody else, thinks that he's beyond reproach, and isn't really bothered at all.

In Deeney's case it must be that he cannot get there, that is to say his knees are gone. He does read the game quite well.
Whether he now sees himself as an amalgamation of Rooney and Sheringham I'm not sure but if he can't get there due to physical limitations he should not play.
    How difficult can it be?
It presents the coach,Gino,Molly Rush with the ideal answer to remove him from 'The Troy Deeney Show' masquerading as the team.
If I were the boss it would be a gift from the gods.

Just do me a favour and watch Deeney properly during games. He doesn't keep up with play, he saunters about, is happy to stand with a CB (or both of them) and if the ball comes over, he is beaten in the air almost every time. Yesterday's header was the only time I can remember him winning a header and getting close for months and months. He never darts to the near post or the far post. He is static and predictable. He is continually moaning about not being passed the ball, but he is inevitably being marked anyway.

But I agree with you on one point. The Coach should change things and get Sarr, Pedro, Zinc and Perica as the attackers.

Yes, that was a bit patronising, I'm sorry.
But I don't care that you have a different opinion to me, as this is about what is happening/not happening, not opinions. Everything I have said in my previous post about what Deeney does and doesn't do is clear for everyone to see.

Tell me what you think Deeney does that helps him get goals, apart from running up to get the ball when there is a penalty.Tell me what you think his attacking qualities are?

    Thank you - apology accepted.

In fairness I don’t totally disagree with you in terms of what he offers. I don’t think Deeney is what we need and he’s certainly past his best, but my annoyance is at the club for not replacing him a long time ago. He doesn’t do any of the things we need him to be doing and that could be down to a number of reasons. I’m not convinced he is free of injury, I don’t think he has the pace or mobility anymore and I don’t think he gets much to work with.

But I do think he grafts and gives his all which is why he retains my respect. I’d far rather a limited player giving maximum effort than a talented player playing at 50% such as Capoue, in the same way I prefer Cleverley over Chalobah. As long as a player gives their all that’s fine by me - if that player simply isn’t good enough then that’s on the club for poor recruitment (Gray) or in Deeney’s case poor succession planning.

Looking at Deeney's performances this season trying to be as unbiased as possible:
L*ton: came on comically overweight and didn't really do anything, but it was funny when he almost put their ********* centre back in a neckbrace when he started on young Ngakia
Coventry home: again, didn't do much, thought we'd turned a corner when he didn't automatically get to take the penalty on his 400th appearance, but alas we reverted to type
QPR away: very bad, although it was a horrible second half performance all round as we tried to sit back on our lead
    Bristol City: woeful
Preston: played well, scored a pen, linked up well with JP, albeit against very depleted opposition
    Forest: woeful
    Cardiff: woeful
Rotherham: only open play goal this season, and also an assist
Birmingham: anonymous like the whole team for much of the game (we didn't even have a shot for 70 minutes ffs), but a nice pass for Perica to win the penalty which he slammed home
Brentford: again, slammed home the penalty, but was completely and utterly overshadowed by Toney and Perica
Norwich: actually got into dangerous positions, but fluffed his lines badly
    Swansea: woeful
Huddersfield: probably the worst yet, lucky to stay on the pitch with that tackle
Barnsley: again scored a pen, played OK but nothing special apart from that
Stoke: probably his best performance of the season, anonymous first half, but a trademark penalty, nice assist and a good shift in the second half
Millwall: had a chance which he should have taken, otherwise awful
QPR home: yet another penalty, but woeful otherwise
Coventry: did some good defensive work, hit the bar, but generally so unthreatening

So, overall, not the worst, but not the best, an average record at best, not worth keeping JP and Perica out of the team, and certainly not worth the £70k or so we're paying him. With the margins we're playing with, we need more, much more

The only thing you think he offers is that he "grafts and gives his all". Nothing else, no attacking attribute at all.

And we even disagree on that, I've felt he has only had about 2 good games in that respect.. He does not give his all, and he does not graft. Far from it.

Yet despite that I’m not sure we have anybody any better - which goes back to my earlier point about lack of squad depth. Deeney is definitely playing a different, deeper role this season but it’s yet more square pegs in round holes. We don’t have an effective striker and we lack creativity from midfield.

We’ll disagree on the effort front.

The long and the short of it is that Deeney should have moved on long ago and been replaced but he hasn’t. Keeping players for too long can be detrimental. If Deeney had gone to Leicester and we’d recruited well we would be ok. If we’d sold Capoue and Doucoure when they wanted to go rather than keeping them when they didn’t want to be here then we might still be in the PL. Ifs, buts and maybes but there is no doubt we lack quality and depth in our squad, particularly in attacking areas.

Could Andy Cole be digging Deeney out?

On Talk***** today he said "I didn't want to take penalties. If you're relying on penalties to score, then you are not good enough. I said to myself that if I can't score in open play, I am not good enough"
