There is so much that i don't get... our team has no identity, no specific style, no pattern of play, no pace and no conviction.

The last half a dozen games we have lacked tempo, its been slow and pedestrian. We get to the half way line hit a cross field ball, which every opposition coach, statistician & player now knows. We then work the ball back to the half way line. How many times did we get behind them today, once maybe twice ?

Why did Deeney spend most of the game at inside left ? was it to open space for Sarr to Ngakia ? if so it didn't work, A couple of times in the 2nd half you saw Kiko run into that space. Even then it created very little, in fact we created very little in clear cut chances all round.

Their goal was a shambles. We all know that Deeney wins the ball in the air by bullying defenders, not something that he can do in our box. We also know that he wins very little in the air against 6'3"+ defenders, so why the hell was he marking a 6'5" centre forward when you have Troost Ekong and Wilmott on the pitch ? And when the ball did fall loose, 4 players stood still, 3 turning their backs, while Moore gets a easy unchallenged shot away

Where exactly is Pedro playing? The lad must be confused, his running into space, looking for nice quick ball, but it never comes. Eventually he goes looking for it, far too deep and in of the field where his not going to damage the opposition. Understandably he looks frustrated, confused and you can see his confidence wilting away.

We only came to life when Hughes came on upped the tempo and ran with the ball. Why it took so long to make other positive changes, when the original game plan wasn't working I don't know. One definite fault of Ivic is his use of this subs and recognising the need to change things when they aren't working.

We've now become predictable and whats worse is that it's beginning to look like the players don't believe in what they should be doing.

And Eddie would say I'll get you promoted if you give me a 20 goal striker
And every 2 bob manager would do and say the same
The 20 goal Championship player the holy grail

    It was 1+1 years.

Have the Pozzos given a manager more than a 2-year deal at the start before? I don't think so, but can't remember for sure. Even Marco Silva and QSF were only 2 year deals initially.

It's funny, we're two games further into the revolution and yet tonight @Harrow Orn seems to have gone quiet.

Can you give us any kind of schedule for when you're going to walk in again and take the piss out of all those here who can't recognise how brilliant we are now that Deeney's back in the side?

The negative possession football is fine if your winning by 2 goals and seeing the game out. This slow ponderous play of waiting for that certain pass is boring predictable and not happening.

The players are losing faith and you can tell by the lack of motivation when not in possession, when in possession they’re instructed to play this way and I think we can tell they don’t like it.

Basics of creating space as a team is 1 -2 touch fast play and switching play. These guys are instructed to keep the ball and not lose possession so the forwards don’t gamble making runs and the midfield doesn’t gamble with getting there heads up and looking for that quick play.

Ok ivic has got away with it with a few 0-0 but it’s really highlighted when we lose like today Barnsley reading for example.

I get what you are saying but how would you suggest our tactics are if we don't possess a goal threat ?

  11. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

Every club possesses a goal threat. It’s for a competent manager to find it and draw it out of the side.

Ivic hasn’t really got any of our players playing to their strengths, however limited some of them may be.

We don’t possess a goal threat with these negative tactics. These negative tactics would be fine if your already protecting a 2 goal lead or you have world class players that can slowly break a team down and capitalize on that one moment in a game.

As for switching the tactics being more on the front foot utilizing our pace on the flanks getting players in the box becoming more adventurous we would have a goal threat.

OK so the match was pretty crap, we were too static and never looked like scoring. Not much to say about the football that hasn’t already been said.
BUT, despite that, it was really nice to be back at the Vic watching live football again. It was a bit surreal - especially walking down a pretty empty Vicarage Road on the way to the match. The Rookery, however, did manage to create more noise and atmosphere than I expected - it was a great feeling when the teams came out on to the pitch (before the actual football started and we still had hope of a great game ahead of us!).
Plus, being glass half full - I was back at home by 6.30pm; my fastest journey home ever.
Lastly, it’s no secret that, since getting a season ticket for the first time in over 20 years last season, I have failed to see Watford score at Vicarage Road. So I apologise for going today and would like to reassure everyone that my name is not in the hat for the remaining games on offer.

In about 8 to 10 years one of these players will write an autobiography and all will become clear.
This club is toxic and has been for sometime. Around about the bepe era and again from Walters reign until the present day. The players have egos bigger than their actual ability. The Pozzo's should stick to being just football agents and nothing else. I can have no confidence in a board who had warning signs at the weakness of our squad from around the semi final time. They ignored or weren't willing to pay wages that the likes of Southampton or Brighton would.
An improved defence, a better forward line were areas where we needed improving so they go out and buy Sarr! why??. I have given Ivic the benefit of the doubt but i now feel his rigid tactics stifling any progress.
I am sure social media will be full of praise for the team after we tonk Rotherham, but then normal Watford will turn up for the games after.

That’s a broader question. WBA and Leeds both got promoted last season without one of those. You don’t necessarily need a ‘nailed-on goalscorer’ if you get others (Sarr, Joao Pedro) hitting their straps more often than not. Or Garner getting a far better ratio of accuracy with his set-pieces. It’s been shown you can go up without a 20-a-season striker if you get a broader sense of decent form from the attacking unit at a whole.

We don’t tick any of those boxes. That’s why it comes down to the managers ability to motivate, pick the right tactics and pick the right players for me.

We are playing like a side that isn’t confident or enjoying it and a manger who is far too timid to attack. But rather than do something about it, we are stumbling from game to game hoping that ‘this is the game where it finally clicks’ - and you end up with false dawns like the Preston game, when the dawning reality is Wycombe/Barnsley/QPR/Bristol City/Forest/Cardiff etc...

When it comes to performances, our ratio of ‘Promotion worthy performances’ to ‘Mid/Lower-table performances’ is WELL off kilter. Keeping Ivic won’t change that and it won’t suddenly click, I’m utterly convinced of that now.

Rotherham managed to score draw with Muff the other day, and given how we've performed against some of the worst sides in the division, I'd be tempted to put a hold on any poultry-counting at this time.

Also the Cardiff centre half deserves praise for managing to clear Femenia's cross over the bar from a yard out. Was fantastic.

Don’t reward him for sub-standard games (Forest) with a start the following game. Put Hughes in, put Capoue in.

Drop him, let him know his place is not guaranteed and he should then want to go away and work harder in training to better his form and get back in.

And quite frankly, if Garner isn’t able to up his frankly awful set piece success rate, then he’s not the player to be taking them anyway.

Garners free kicks were criminal today. A professional footballer who can’t kick a ball properly, it would be funny if it wasn’t so annoying.

Not what I’ve said is it?

Drop him to let him know his standard wasn’t good enough. Make him want to go away and work on it, don’t reward him with another start.

If the player who comes in has the same faults, then a a manager should be questioning his training and his ability to get the best out of them.

Whilst the squad we’ve put together isn’t the level we thought/hoped it was, there’s plenty of talent in there still. Just because they aren’t as good as we believed, doesn’t make them terrible.

Eh? You asked how do you make Garner get a better ratio. I literally told you.

Don’t pick him in the next starting line-up after such a poor game and tell him why. If he’s got anything about him, he’ll go away and work hard on his faults. If he doesn’t, then he’s not the player for us.

And that same argument goes for every player in the squad.

But at the moment we have a coach who is both rewarding players with starts after bad games - or letting them return to the starting line-up without the requisite improvement after being dropped. That’s a big problem.
