That’s f****** terrible business then. If we’re still paying tens of thousands for Deulofeu, or even Pereyra/Pussetto then we should bloody well get to use them! Shocking that we couldn’t palm them off to someone else who could pay actual money.
I mean surely Udinese was plan Z, we heard nothing of Geri going there until deadline day, there probably weren't any takers willing to take a risk on him. Bit surprised nobody was willing to even just cover the wages for a season, £3m ain't that much of a commitment really for someone who could be amazing (even for someone like Udinese, where even that part they're paying him makes him the top earner) BTW there's no indication we're paying Pereyra's wages, he left on a permanent for an 'undisclosed' fee. God knows how much Pussetto was on here
Pereyra went on a perm deal so unlikely we’re still paying him. No way Pusetto is on £30k a week. Delefeou could come back here if we got promoted so that one makes sense
Cleverley has signed a new 3 year deal https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-watford-senior-star-agrees-new-three-year-deal/
Only a 1 year extension but really doesn't make much sense. He seems a good character and all but can't be that hard to replace.
Excellent news. Will be a tremendous asset in the PL after we get promoted as champions. I would have made it 5 years myself.
Well....there is an option for another year!! Adam Leventhal @AdamLeventhal · 9m #WatfordFC contract news Tom Cleverley has agreed a new 3 year contract at Vicarage Road taking him through until June 2023. Understand there is also option for further year.
He is because they're obviously not spending money. Vlad has seen what he offers to the team and has made him Captain for a reason. I'm happy that he's signed the extension because of what he brings to the team.
This extension though is surely about what we think he'll be bringing to the team in 2022/23? That's my issue with it. I think for now he's a positive influence and happy to be here and playing, and probably at the right level too. And as you say we can't replace him anyway.
I understand that. But that bridge should be crossed if or when we get promoted. Our main concern is the here and now as you've said. He's Captain now and maybe that's why they've given him the extension to incorporate this. Not once has he rocked the boat, he's just got his head down and worked since Vlad turned up. He's seen this ultimately giving him the armband for not only what he does on the pitch but at the training ground. We could of obviously done with a few more Cleverlys during the Summer than some of the wasters we had.
Worth noting that Ivic has said Deeney is still captain mind you... I like Cleverley and he’s a good character to have obviously. But I really don’t see what the issue was with keeping him at the 2 existing years he had for now. Only sense I can see is if we have asked him to reduce his wage and he’s agreed on the basis of getting an extra years security.
I didn't realise Vlad had said that about Deeney. Will be interesting to see once he's back. Yes you're probably correct in your assumption of his contract. I'm still pleased that he has signed one because as you say he's a good character to have around and personally I'd prefer to have him as Captain than Deeney.
He already had a contract for the here and now. This season and next. The extension just reduces our flexibility further down the line to A) upgrade him if we go up or B) release him if he declines with age/injury. It’s a poor move in my book and shows they have learned nothing from the Prodl and Janmaat fiascos. Only can be justified if he is taking a big cut in return for a longer deal, and even then handing out more extensions to aging players when you already have players on long contracts nobody wants is just poor business.
Thought I’d check this thread in hope this would be the last season of having to watch you know who and you know who. But, alas, it’s this season and next. No way will they be bought, half a chance one of them could get a loan? Maybe we could pay the other one off? Anyone got any ideas the sort of deals players get in these circumstances? Half the contracted pay maybe?
Feels like I'll be watching Deeney play for us for a good few years yet. Just waiting for the contract extension be be announced.
Hughes, Chalobah and Quina will all only have one year remaining on their contracts after this season.
They'll only be staying if we go up. That's not going to happen now, so they'll be sold in the summer along with Sarr (obviously) Kiko and maybe even Sieralta. His form has been so good, offers are bound to come in for him and we won't be in a position to refuse. On the plus side Gray will stay.
Will anyone really want Chalobah? Leicester weren't as close to signing him as Leventhal let on apparently, and he's really a fairly average Championship player on what we can assume are Premier League wages
We can say goodbye to Hughes and Quina, we'll cash in on them. I think Chalobah's chance of a Premier League has gone.
GOOD. I don't understand why you lot moan about potential departures so much when you also moan about how bad the team has been since Wembley, it makes no sense. We need to get rid of as many of these half-a**ed duffers as possible. It's only a handful of players who are yet to disgrace themselves who are worth keeping in my opinion; Dele Bashiru, Ngakia, PZ, Sema, WTE to name a few. Build a new team.
The club have spent years giving contract extensions to the oldest players at the club who have absolutely no resale value. Now all of a sudden we have younger players who could bring in some cash entering the last year of their contract, meaning we'll get peanuts. I once fell for the Pozzo masterplan of buy cheap youngsters and sell them for massive profit. It's a complete myth at Watford. With millions and millions of TV money they managed to create a retirement home where players are still here seeing out their contracts and collecting a fat paycheck every week. And now we're relegated any talent we stumbled upon needs to be sold probably below their market value.
I agree with the names you mention. I would add Pedro, Wilmot and Sierralta, but other than that (assuming Sarr, Hughes and Kiko are gone) the rest can go.
I'm not moaning about their potential departures, I'm just pointing out the apparent short-sightedness of our squad plans.
I think he’ll also only have 1 year left. Leventhal has said a few times Watford want him to sign a new deal. Getting benched every week by Munoz won’t help that; maybe he’ll be more inclined next month when the new HC takes over.
Agree to an extent, but looking at those names, Quina hasn’t disgraced himself. Young player with plenty of potential. A La Liga side have been willing to add him to their squad, so that must tell you he has some value. Hughes is class and letting him go for nothing (or next to nothing this summer) would be horrendous management. Only Chalobah leaving for free is arguably not a terrible thing if he really is on £50k per week.
Sure Quina may have a future here and does deserve a chance. Unpopular opinion but I would sell Hughes. Hard worker but he's been a part of this problem ridden team for a long time now. He goes missing at times. Both parties need something different.
Sorry, it was a comment in relation to other people moaning about Chalobah's near exit the other day.
Utter piffle. Hughes is very close to the top of the list of WFC players we should keep if at all possible.
