There’s no such thing as a ‘transfer list’ in football these days - certainly not at the upper levels of the game. The most you’ll get is us telling him and his agent they are free to explore a move but the terms have to suit us etc etc.

Of course the press will take a whole interview and only pick out the more interesting lines - but the point is that Deeney knows that and has done it anyway. If you’re wary of the media’s tactics, don’t give the interview or don’t say stupid stuff.

Sorry. There’s no pushing the blame for his idiocy on to the media for this one. This is all on him. I can accept all the flirtations with going back to the PL, and all the other wishful statements he makes - but I find the repeated admittance that he wasn’t fit for the season and his quite frankly astonishing statement that he shouldn’t have played at the end of the season, beyond the pale. That’s quite literally saying ‘f*ck you’ to fans who saw it happening and are paying the consequences through relegation.

Yes he will have a place in the record books. And I can happily say thanks for his time with the club. But that admittance removes any semblance that he’s a ‘club legend’ for me. Club legends don’t act like a millstone around the teams neck in times of crisis just to satisfy their hero complex.

If he ends up staying he'll have no one to blame but himself. I'm sure the club will recognise everything he's done for us but will be happy for him to leave now.

A fantastic servant to the club who over the last 10 years has probably given as much to the club as they have given him.

I’m very much in the nonplussed / on the fence category as to whether he’s here next season or not - and to me it would be a shame for him to leave in the current circumstances with no fans in stadiums etc etc.

I just really really wish he’d keep his mouth shut in the media sometimes.

He’s big enough and ugly enough to deal with this criticism. Pressure where he comes from is putting food on the table, not impressing Geordie bloggers

He knows he’ll get stick on social media but football is a game at the end of the day and he relishes the banter with the opposition... did I mention he’s a big man?

On a general point it does show how the view of Steve Bruce does contrast between Newcastle fans and the general football media who really rated what he did last season very highly.

( Of course he is British ..)

Newcastle spending big wages on Ryan Fraser, £13.5m on Jamal Lewis and £20m on Callum Wilson - how’s this playing into the false narrative that Mike Ashley doesn’t spend money on them or even care?

Its reported that he says he wont hand in a transfer request, or that he has been told to go. So its up to the PL clubs to buy/obtain him as it stands.

He certainly won't put in a transfer request as traditionally that means the player has to give up a pay off from the selling club.

Good and I hope he stays, however, I think it's unlikely he'll be part of things now. It seems like we've moved on, with signing Perica and Murray. It's unlikely we'll have Deeney too, but I'd be delighted to have another striker in the mix of his calibre. I'd want to keep Welbeck too, but even I would consider that a little OTT.

But, playing 2 games a week, whoever is in the 30 man squad, will all be used. I think everyone will get plenty of game time.

The Geordies are really raising doubts about this deal - especially the £30m wages over the contract length...

If there is only one transfer left for Watford this Window, I would want it to be this blow hard leaving.

He's the figurehead of everything that was wrong last season. He's part of the dressing room that drops tools every season when they get tired of the coach.

He's the mouthpiece for the players that have taken us down.

We need a new era without him and it needs to start ASAP.

I find it hard to believe the club don't realise this. Even a large proportion of the Deeney loyalists want him gone. Only 9% of Watford fans on this forum want him to stay.

In this case I tend to agree with his many alter egos.

Presently Troy is still under contract as a Watford player , officially still club captain , hasn't asked for a transfer , played when injured , his wages were agreed by the club officials and were in reflection of his statue at the time of renewal.
So until he leaves ,i will give him my support , if he ever plays again and puts in a poor performance or effort, i will like others give him criticism.
Mumerous managers have come and gone in his 10 year service , but how many have publicly called him a bad influence .

  25. Burnsy

Mazzarri had his number I think...

But do you really expect, given the short leash we give head coaches, for any of them to have ever come out and criticised the captain publicly? Really? And why are you giving him kudos for playing when injured?! It’s that egotistical nonsense from him that’s partly landed us where we are!

I genuinely think that if he was the exact player he is now but just didn’t open his mouth so loudly and publicly, he’d get his move to the PL. A lower end club would go for him.

I think his mouth and ego have done the opposite for him that he’s planned - I think they’ve turned a lot of clubs away from him.

i think you will find that it is quite common for professional players to have injections etc to allow them to play through injuries , the dodgy knees weren't kept secret, it was the lack of a quality replacement that necessitated the managerial team selecting him.
As for Mazzarri, he couldn't even be bothered to learn English so how can he make any statement

  29. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

I mean - that’s a pretty flimsy argument on both counts.

Mazzarri dropped him. That’s all the statement needed. Why would they need to criticise him publicly when they have the power to drop him?

As for the injections - a poor excuse when the player himself has admitted he shouldn’t have played. You’re giving the player excuses that he won’t even give himself! And he’s been full of excuses in recent years. Every season (maybe bar the first) in the PL he’s admitted he’s not been fit for. But it’s always after the event and never before it. It’s two fingers up to fans and nothing less. I can accept his character or even the constant whoring himself out to the media - I don’t like it but I could accept it if we were at least getting the best version of him at his primary function at the club - being a footballer. But he loses any goodwill when he admits time and time again that he’s not fit to do the job he’s paid for, while he stands around criticising other professionals or digging out his own teammates. It’s a wonder someone bigger than him hasn’t smacked him for his level of disrespect at times.

We have a player/captain who’s ego/hero complex became bigger than the plight of the club and it’s clear as day and the evidence was staring us right in the face - plenty saw it at the time. And yet some are still loathe to criticise the man. I just don’t get it.

You can be grateful for the good stuff he’s done in the past and yet still be heavily critical of what he’s become. It’s not one or the other.

Absolutely. If you tot up all the interviews over the recent seasons, have there been any when he's been fully fit? It's a constant refrain from Deeney - he wasn't motivated, he wasn't fit, he was injured etc.

Also worth pointing out the inconsistencies, when we were in the break, he gave an interview saying there was no problem with him coming back later than others as he was the kind of player that could get fit in two weeks. Then all of a sudden he's playing "on one knee". He just says whatever pops into his head, whether true or not.

Although I voted for him to leave I disagree with the wording and vitriol from some of the posters in this thread.

He is a watford legend. But it time for him to go. He seems to have too much influence in dressing room and has lost some (but certainly not all) of his skills.

Good luck in future Troy and thanks for the last 10 years. I hope you get your dreams.

I'll calm down the vitriol when he's ****ed off. In fact, when he's retired. I don't want the risk of him coming back.

I agree. Saying you ‘hate’ him is a bit silly in my opinion. However, Troy didn’t think twice before being personal about Joelinton or Haller’s footballing ability. So any criticism of him as a player or professional is more than warranted.
