Lol, true but I think that was more to do with Everton than his coaching ability. The reason I brought up Barnsely being relegated is that it may make it easier for us to take Struber away from them. They actually took quite a lot of point and played some good stuff under them, I follow Barnsley from a distance as my Granny was from there and supported them.

I've already posted that twice, once on the page before you, and once a few days ago in the transfer suggestions thread.

@Smudger liked your post, but didn't like either of mine, not that I'm bitter or anything.

Haha my apologies - never seen.

My family is from Israel so seeing him in a Watford shirt would be the dream.

The two reports don't necessarily contradict each other, according to Leventhal we actually approached Struber to sound out his interest.

The BBC Sheffield guy just says we haven't approached Barnsley.

As someone on the Twitter thread below the BBC journalist points out we wouldn't have necessarily needed to have spoken to Barnsley yet given that we already know he has a £1mil release clause.

I know it happens so it’s naive think it hasn’t. But that’s essentially tapping up?
But in this day and age when managers and players all share agents, it’s pretty hard to claim someone’s been tapped up.

Still, given all the Everton/Silva stuff, we’d be a bit two-faced to engage in it ourselves!

Yup. A lot happens through intermediaries and agents. I think it's perfectly possible Watford can have legitimately expressed an interest without speaking to Barnsley formally.

This comment is just to annoy any Barnsley fans that might read it. We're a massive massive club, big step up for Struber if he comes here, no brainer. Also, If he signs a 2 year contract and gets sacked after 3 months, he'll be quids in!

Seriously though, I wouldn't be adverse to seeing him appointed if possible.

I don't see it that way at all. There's nothing wrong with any club approaching one of your players or coach if it's done through the proper channels. Once the official answer is given by the club then the next step can be taken. If it's a 'yes' then you can proceed, if it's a 'no', then you respect that and go elsewhere.

A massive difference from what Everton did. They made an official approach, which is perfectly fine, but they didn't like the answer so proceeded to unsettle Silva anyway to such a point the club had to issue a Cease and Desist order against Everton.

On a serious note though I would rather Ivic

Don’t get me wrong I would be happy with either. However I’m probably leaning more towards Ivic than Struber just because, while Struber has done a fantastic job at Barnsley, Ivic just seems to have this winning mentality. He knows what it takes to win things. That type of mindset is desperately needed here. He also seems to favour 4-3-3/4-2-3-1/3-5-2 which suits our set of players way more than Struber’s 4-1-2-1-2 diamond, or 4-3-2-1/4-3-1-2.

In my opinion, if we get Struber, we would have to sign a lot more players than we would with Ivic.

Rose and Stenft were definitely appointed at the same time as Struber. Not overly clear whether Struber was involved with their appointment.

Struber has played 3-5-2 quite a lot as well in his away games with Barnsley. He also occasionally switches to a more typical 4-3-3.

It's debatable whether Struber's 4-3-1-2 diamond or Ivic's 4-3-3 will ultimately suit our squad best. Struber's formation could give more opportunities in preferred positions to forwards such as JP, Cucho, Suarez, Welbeck etc. if we keep them, however it would mean Sarr would be more shoe-horned in somewhere on the off-chance he stays.

Ivic's formation obviously means we would have to adapt less initially, but who plays as our main CF(s)/#9 will be a big question-mark that will have to be addressed.

Ultimately I'm not sure our squad necessarily suits one system more than the other, especially given that it will likely see huge changes in personnel over the summer anyway.

I reckon Struber is probably more open and adaptable when it comes to working with younger players though, Ivic seemed to have a pretty experienced team at Tel Aviv.

I kind of understand what you mean about the winner's mentality with Ivic, but Struber has demonstrated a decent amount of that with Wolfsberger still, especially in the EL where he did excellently, while Ivic disappointed.

In a way I reckon Ivic might do better in the Championship and demand more in the way of immediate success, but long-term Struber might instil more of a consistent philosophy as well as being more likely to do a good job in the PL should we get promoted, whereas we could do another Joka with Ivic.

Both apparat to be Gruber’s men from what I can see. Max Senft was with him at Wolfsberger as his assistant manager.

Matt Rose joined Barnsley as First Team coach after Struber’s appointment. Whether that was his decision or the clubs, don’t know.

Just a minor correction on those two Barnsley staff, Max Senft worked with Struber at Wolfsberger.

It seems unclear as to whether Matt Rose worked with Struber at the same club before. However, the two supposedly did know each other already and he was appointed by Struber when he took over at Barnsley.

It does appear to have been his decision, according to the Barnsley website he was "Arriving at Oakwell as part of Gerhard Struber's first team coaching setup".

"Matt’s work across Europe over recent years allowed him to meet Struber, where their paths crossed on a number of occasions. The pairing have a solid working relationship and will now begin a new era together at the club. Rose joins in the role of First Team Coach.".

Yeah it’s definitely going to be interesting.

Like I said I would be happy with either, just personally lean more towards Ivic being what we need more than Struber. If finances and time was on our side to bounce back, then Struber is probably the better man for the job. However finances and time isn’t on our side and we need to bounce back immediately or we will find ourselves in a big financial mess.

Can Struber get us automatically promoted? Maybe? He’s done a fantastic job at Barnsley, but there were also games where he made some dodgy decisions that cost Barnsley the game, according to their fans.

Ivic, granted in the Israeli league, won back to back league titles, only losing 2 games in 2 seasons. Regardless of what league, that’s an impressive stat and winners mindset. When at PAOK won them the Greek Cup, something they hadn’t achieved in years. I just like Ivic’s mindset over Struber’s.

Struber comes across as another Javi to me, nice guy that will be friendly with the players. Ivic comes across as a manager that takes no bs from players, and you earn your starting 11 place by performing on the pitch and in training.

My concern with Struber is we would have another Javi situation.

Again it’s all opinion and only based on what I’ve seen and read in the various articles, but that’s why I favour Ivic over Struber.

I agree that the cold, dead eyed stare of Ivic is slightly more suited to our bunch of whingers than the bald friendliness of Lieutenant Gruber.

That said, both look like decent candidates, which will make it more infuriating when Guidolin is appointed.

I think we need to talk to him to see if there is a fit.

It is a good thing that we may get some fresh invention from a new coach, but I’m always mindful that the fresh face is simply one whose flaws are yet to be exposed. Snakey McSnakeface was a breath of fresh air once. Gary Monk, Carlos Carvalhal and countless others too. Even Hoofroyd was once.

We don’t want in nine months time to be back where we started having tanked spectacularly, with everyone desperate for some old gnarly hand like Allardyce to steady the tiller.
