Good grief. We should commission a statue of Gino toot sweet. (It could become a regular stop off on the Dudley Moore Society tour.)
17m for a 23 year old verses 5m for a 30 year old. Meh. Young home grown players cost dough but have resale value.
Gomes makes sense if he's 3rd choice next season. By all accounts we have 2 great young keepers in Bachmann and Dahlberg but with Foster #1, it means one will likely play in the cups with the other not getting any game-time at all. Therefore with both of them being young itll be a detriment to their development if they both stayed, therefore a loan is likely for one of them....with us needing a third keeper as a result of that, Gones provides that as an inexpensive option, with the benefit of knowing the club and getting on with everyone + whatever he can bring to Joao Pedro when he arrives, really it's a no brainer. That is however if he is third choice. If he's 2nd choice it's a lot less understandable.
Agree. But we all laughed at Muff buying Mings for 8m but I imagine they could recoup that now even though he’s basically been a failure. Target for 17m probably has less downside that first appears?
If we have no overseas player surplus then fine I suppose as #3. If we do then rather Bachman at 2 and a recall clause on Dahlberg loan.
We have a whole Bernard Matthews shed of turkeys but they are cheap, Lidl’s turkeys. And they are our turkeys. Who was the Brazilian futsal fellow?
Maybe but you have to finish 17th or better first otherwise the economics may well implode. Shame about Mings. Seems like an exemplary young man.
Agree. But this is what home grown players with premier league experience cost. We’d do well to develop a couple of our own and sell them for similar inflated fees but our academy output is pathetic over the last decade.
It's only at this late hour that I've realised that Craig Dawson and Michael Dawson are not the same person. Told the kids our new signing had played for both Spurs and England. I'm worried that their view of me as the perfect man may now be spoilt
Dawson C did better than that. He played in the Olympics. On your earlier Spurs reference, I’d assumed a weird autocorrect intervention: type Rochdale, get Tottenham.
Best plan is just to stick with it going forward. You're going to have to robustly challenge anyone you hear referring to him as Craig at a match.
Jurado was unpopular with fans cos he had no end product but he was a key member of our 1st year survival/FA cup semi final team. His value to the team was that the ball stuck to his feet meaning the other players had time to get back in position while he was on the ball. It was an important role at a newly promoted club but the lack of end product was very frustrating to watch. Suarez actually made us worse almost every time he played and blocked the arrival of Doucs.
You have certainly got a good memory and appreciation of the many different players and the parts they played and when, on our Premier League tour! It seems we have had so many I had erased from my memory both Jurado and Suarez, thanks for reminding me of them both!
Can’t believe how negative some people are being about Dawson. We are desperate for CBs and we have gone and nabbed one of the championships best and for an amazing price. He’s a big upgrade on what we currently have. Britos out / Dawson in. What’s not to like about that?
He’s good and it’s nice to see the club are making moves in the right direction. But he’s similar in ability to Cathcart and I’m not sure I’d call him a ‘big’ upgrade. I don’t think anyone is being negative about Dawson in particular as a player - I just think some people see a potential 5 year deal as unnecessary and not something another club does. And the wish for many is that this isn’t the sum total of our defensive recruitment. I really hope there is a top quality CB on the way as well at some stage. And I think that’s a bit harsh on Britos who personally I think has more ability than Mariappa. I think we’d have been better with him with Cathcart last season.
Dawson is on a par with Cathcart and better than Maps, Kansele etc. You can easily spend £30m on a defender and get no better e.g Keane at Everton
Just a thought - what are people’s opinions on Wilmot as a centre back? Because he’s probably 5th choice when Dawson comes in, that will become 6th if we sign another (as most of us hope). I’d like to see him given a chance but that would mean having to sell Kabasele and likely Mariappa too or he’d never get a look in.
Coming into? He should already be very much in it. It's true that central defenders tend to peak later than other outfield positions, but they tend to start declining at around 31/32. If he does a Prodl and hits the wall as soon as he turns 31 then he'll still have 2 years left on his contract when we need to shift him. This is quite an interesting article on player's peak ages: https://www.espn.com/soccer/blog/ta...goalkeepers-and-central-defenders-peak-latest
As I've posted elsewhere, to me he appears to be lacking a number of physical attributes to make it for us as a regular centre back. He seems scrawnier than Cathcart, while not as quick as Kabasele. I could be proven wrong, and he might still develop with more time, but to me it's not a surprise that at least at the moment Javi seemed more willing to use him as a defensive midfielder. He would have been able to play more minutes as a CB at Udinese as they play with a back three, so his deficiencies were less likely to be exposed.
More than happy to welcome. Hopefully Wilmot will also gain from the Two Craigs. Still think we need another maybe younger CB if Prodl moves on.
The problem with our defenders has been their propensity to make careless errors. Dawson, to my memory, is much more disciplined. Pulis defender.
