?

Do you feel Watford disrespected the cup and shortchanged the fans who travelled.

I'm sorry, I just can't make sense of this. How do you expect him to get to the point where he's capable of making the squad for league games, if you're never giving him any minutes on the pitch? Of all the changes made, giving one of our potentially most important players the chance to work his way back to fitness is surely one that made total sense.

On train back. We deserved to win. As to performances well yes success should have done better and Gray skyed a chance before he scored but Gomes never had to make a save. That was a strong Newcastle team affirmed by Geordies we spoke to after the game. We are a very decent team with some strength in reserve relative to us being top of the 14 also rans in PL. happy days

About the line-up I expected and wasn’t disappointed pre-game at all. We have a big squad and we need to use it. Eleven changes is obviously an eye catching stat, but if you actually take a look at who came in, I don’t think it was disrespectful to the competition at all. Lots of first team squad members who are coming back from injury; lots of talented players who would expect to command a place in the team, trying to prove they should be starting league games. Nothig wrong with the selection in my book.

First half wasn’t great - can’t remember very much happening really. Seemed to change from 4-5-1 to 5-3-2 towards the end of the half. Wilmot wasn’t involved too much in the middle but looked happier dropping back alongside Cathcart and Britos.
This allowed Hughes to play a bit more central and he (shock horror) made a goal as a result. He and Quina playing narrowly but drifting wide to the respective flanks when required was better in this system. Doing it in a 4-4-2 means there’s not enough width when attacking, but with the wing backs overlapping (happened more so 1st half) we still had that width. Maybe this shape could be utilised again?

As for the forwards, I thought Gray had been useless all game and then he popped up with a goal. Took it well in fairness but it doesn’t mean his performance otherwise should be excused.
Success did what he always does. Brings it down on his chest well, then falls over a lot. Has to be cleverer at linking play. He has the physique but makes the wrong choices too much.

Finally a word onChalobah, who grew in to the game and I was impressed by his second half display. Big improvement on his last few outings so hopefully the player of the start of last season can re-emerge and take the league by storm. Maybe take him off free-kick duty though!

As simpleMASH has just alluded to, '11 changes' is really a very stupid, sensationalist red herring. It doesn't tell us anything about the actual players themselves; as we know, some of those players who were 'changed' were not themselves first XI players, but were forced to play the previous game for one reason or another.

Cathcart is our first choice centre back, only missing the last game thanks to injury. Will Hughes, exactly the same; has been a starting player for the majority of the season. Personally, I prefer Kiko, but it's not even clear now whether he or Janmaat is our first choice right back, and in Daryl we are talking about a Holland international who has come third in a World Cup, and is still just 29; no question of being 'over the hill' or significantly past his prime. It's also not like we played a child in goal; Gomes has been our first choice goalkeeper for the vast majority of the previous 4 seasons. Plenty of teams have second goalkeepers who play the cup; I didn't hear Sutton wetting his pants about Utd fielding Romero last night. Chalobah is an England international, midway through his journey back from an extremely serious injury. What better possible time is there to give him minutes?

Essentially, as ever, context is King, and as ever, it's being purposefully ignored for the sensationalism of the eye-catching stat. Nothing to concern ourselves with.

  14. With West Ham losing, the PL teams left in apart from us are:
    Man U
    Man C
    Tottenham or Palace
Wolves if they win replay with Shrewsbury
    Chelsea if they beat Wednesday.
Brighton if they beat West Brom

Astonishing. When was the last time there were only 7 PL teams in 5th round (and it could be as few as 4) ?

    Answer 2017 (7)!
    But normally it's 10-12.

But, still, the Cup’s just a sideshow, eh @lowerrous? Something just for the older generations wearing their rose-tinted glasses?

So by tomorrow at least 10 Premier teams are out, that's only 10 left in (4 of the top six) 6 of the rest at the moment with possibly some more to fall before the 5th round, we really have a chance this year if the draw is a little kind,, home next please!

I still don’t totally agree with the starting line up but I’m estactic as that went pretty much perfectly with the added double bonus of Chalobah still being alive and kicking and some rested players for the Spurs game.

I’d have thought we are 5th favourites to win the cup now which feels strange for us in the 5th round.

I said several weeks ago that our squad is deeper than those clubs around us. We were able to change the whole starting line up and yet it didn't seem to be a second string side.

I think our squad strength will be crucial over the next 3 months, and I can't see any of the teams below us thinking that they are in a better shape, considering our position, our team, squad, form and coach.

No, I've heard that they may play a reserve side as they are concentrating on the world cup so our reserves may be ok.
However I would play Cathcart just to nullify their star striker, Pele, named after the famous striker who played for Marseille and Lyon in the 1990s.

  21. At least 13. 7 left in, 3 or 4 of the top 6, 4 or 3 of the rest.
Which means we have at least a 60% chance of drawing a lower league team.

I was freezing cold and wet. But OMG I’m soooo glad I went.

Terrible first half with us just edging it overall. Quina good shot and Chalobah did well.

Seconded half when Gray missed his first chance I thought god here we go but he shut us all up with a stunning finish across Woodman to give us a deserved lead. Newcastle woke up a bit after that and had Wilmot not done a great header off the line it would of been a different game.

But low and behold, Chalobah sets off Quina who puts in a peach of a cross for Success to angle in. Job done.

First ever visit to Newcastle and the town is massive and quite impressive. Locals talk like they’re pissed and wtf does Weh Eye Man mean?

Thought the lads did well today and our second string is looking pretty handy. We definitely have the strength and depth to handle a game and I thought Britos was pretty strong. He charged down a few and put a good performance in.

It was nice for gray to put in a good performance and actually show us what he can do. Chalobah looks a bit rusty still but some of his touches were class.

Thank you to all other hornets and hornettas for making the long journey north in a horrible cold day.

Thank you to the guy sat near me on the coach who shared his sarnie too.

Great win, fifth round and to get home to see Snakey out and Wet Spam gone too... we might just have a shot at this.

Vocals need to come back ahead of Spuds on Wednesday now. Sit back and watch Sheff Wed knock out Chelsea tomorrow knowing our job so far is done.

  25. Kings Langley won 3-1 in what was a commanding performance.

After a solid start from the home side, Staines started coming back in to the game and threatened on a couple of occasions, but the Langley turned it on in the second half and stretched to a big lead.

A late staines goal did nothing to temper the celebrations and kings Langley went on to a comfortable win.
