Do you feel Watford disrespected the cup and shortchanged the fans who travelled.

    I asked the Geordies about this in A. N. Other place. The money clause either ended in December or it's ending very soon. The feeling was that Rafa would stay with club until the end of the season because of a mixture of despair at the owner and solidarity with the fans...

  4. Even though:
    they need to get past Shrewsbury to get into the 5th round;
    we are above them in the league;
    we beat them handsomely at Molineux.
    Yes, that makes sense.

    I believe 'Wye Aye Man' was invented by Mark Knopfler,professional Geordie,in writing the tunes for 'Auf Weidersehen Pet'. Some think it is a secret code to George Michael,others Mark asking if anyone has seen his red bandana or sweatband.
    However this has not helped his main ambition in life,that is to become JJ Cale.

    Didn't manage to watch it yesterday - how did Wilmott look? And Penaranda, once he came on?

    Wilmot looked like a Cathcart clone, which is a good thing. Penaranda - neat and tidy.

    It certainly comes to something when Savage is defending our 11 changes. Shows you how much of an attention grabbing **** Sutton is. As for the above. Would be sooo good if it was a “never win anything with kids” moment.

    For clubs still in the lower leagues (thus with the incentive of a "giant killing").

    While our game was very far from being fantastic.

    Wilmott looked OK - nothing exceptional, but looks like there's a Premier league player in there. He started in midfield where he was competent, if unexceptional, before seemingly dropping into a back 3 with Britos and Cathcart, which is good - shows flexibility. Newcastle had a chance which he comfortably headed off the line. Either a routine clearance or great positional sense to get there to block it, depending on your POV.

    Peñeranda didn't do a huge amount, but he was instrumental in the second goal, by running forwards and then sending it wide to Quina, who crossed it nicely for Success to tuck home. Have a look at the highlights I linked earlier.

    As for the controversy, it never crossed my mind that there was anything wrong with this 11.

    Gomes for Foster - arguably very little between them
    Cathcart - our first name on the team sheet when fit
    Janmaat - arguably first choice RB, recovering from injury
    Britos - our third choice CB until now, but this was a chance for him to stake a claim - I believe he did it
    Masina - here we have a definite second stringer. Holebas is our nailed on LB at the moment and yesterday showed why. At the start of the season we had hoped Masina was coming in to replace Holebas. Now I'd argue we need someone to replace Masina as 2nd choice and to pressure Holebas' place.

    Quina - Has shown plenty in first team games this season. If Doucoure is injured, as he was against Bunrsley, then Quina would probably be a shout to replace him
    Wilmot - Not a first teamer yet, but has shown himself capable. As a fan, I certainly wasn't unhappy about the chance to have a look at him
    Hughes - A first teamer when fit. I like him a lot and am not as critical of his performances out of position as others this season. I feel he's not benefitted from a run in the side, but his competitiveness, like Cleverley, always gives you something, even if he's not at the top of his game. He's a low risk player to start any time IMO.

    Gray - our record signing - returning from injury. I am no fan, but it's perfectly reasonable to expect him to get minutes in a game like this. With only 3 out and out striking options in the squad, it would make little sense to start Deeney again and give him no chance in a cup game.
    Success - as above - he's been close to showing something at times this season, but for some reason, his terrible lack of brain power is holding him back. Still, in a squad of 3 strikers, it can't be seen as disrespectful to give 2 of the 3 a chance in a game like this.

    Overall, with the option of bringing on Capoue, Deeney and Deulefeou from the bench, with that line up, I'd say it was a reasonable risk/reward decision by Javi. Rested Pereyra, Clevs, Holebas and Doucoure and had enough ammunition on the bench if things went awry, which they didn't.

    So we gave 3 young English players a chance eh?

    Surely pundits like Sutton should praise that as they keep moaning about lack of chances for the yoof.

    To be fair, plenty of posters on here - including me - were saying the same before the start, and even well into the game. But Moog, with his usual cool logic, has demolished the idea that we played 11 secomd-choices

    The original debate came about because I was surprised that you, as a fan, preferred the highest PL finish to winning the Cup.

    I can accept (though don’t welcome) that the Cup is a “sideshow” to owners like the Pozzos. But I don’t agree that fans see it that way, and last night’s matches demonstrate clearly to me why it is still enormously valued by fans - and not just those of “earlier generations”. Will Everton and West Ham fans be shrugging their shoulders and reassuring themselves that they can concentrate on trying to finish seventh now? I very much doubt it.

    I kind of do understand the argument of 11 changes. We’ve been burnt so many times making excessive changes in the past. I would caveat this time though as a number of the players have started or featured quite heavily in the Prem this season. Something that, as others have pointed out, Sutton has no interest in investigating and just went for the headline change count. He wasn’t alone in that respect.

    Also, I do think it is quite important that you do keep all players involved as much as possible. It’s not as if, as I mentioned, they haven’t been involved in the Prem games to this point. Those that haven’t much are either young (Quina, Pandanera) or coming back off injury. Is it better to get them out for 90mins competitive action or 10-15mins here and there in the Prem. Rightly or wrongly, the cup competitions are a great chance to do this. I’d go one further and say that 2-3 may likely get far more game time having got these four games under their belt with drops in form/energy levels looking increasingly likely. Some of these players may help us avoid the seemingly seasonal collapse of the last 3 seasons.
