What a nasty man Samuels is. What a perfect match he is for the Daily Mail. Just wish I hadn’t added to their click tally to read that bile

  2. My point is that factually he is correct, but has drawn the wrong conclusion.

Where does he say something factual that is not parallel with what is in Duxbury's interview?

I am saying we shouldn't be concerned by him saying we are a stepping stone club, or a small club (which is exactly what Duxbury said).

His ignorance is not exposed by recognising what Duxbury and Gino have always known and embraced in order for Watford to thrive, but his interpretation that Silva's disloyalty is justified by, even justice for, a disloyalty by the Club which is a figment of his own imagination.

After sacking Marco Silva, let's hope Watford's hapless owners the Pozzo family get what they deserve

    Martin Samuel

So what did they expect? Loyalty? He was passing through. Everybody is, at Watford. The manager, the players. Hell, English football had to change its rules to guard against the transitory nature of the Pozzo family's vision.

Remember plan A: 14 loan signings, 10 from Udinese in season 2012-13? The Pozzo blueprint ran so against the spirit of the game that, after one campaign, both the Premier League and Football League wrote new rules to prevent it happening again.

The conveyor belt of disposable managers, however, is beyond their remit. Watford have dumped or lost nine now, since dismissing Sean Dyche in July 2012.

Placed in that context the wounded innocence of their statement, having claimed another victim, is a peak of irony.

Marco Silva was eyeing the exit door before his employers had the chance to steer him through it. He coveted the opportunity to succeed Ronald Koeman at Everton.

Who could blame him? Watford have ditched their manager at the end of the last three seasons when, in the opinion of most neutrals, each has done a reasonable job.

Slavisa Jokanovic won promotion, Quique Sanchez Flores stayed up and reached an FA Cup semi-final, Walter Mazzarri kept Watford safe despite a mind-boggling mix of nationalities — he had used players from 21 different countries by mid-September. Gone, all gone.

Silva may have started well but he is no fool. Watford isn't a long-term project. He used Hull and he was using Watford — as they were using him. He saw them as another step up the ladder — he just didn't expect the opportunity for elevation to come so soon.

Silva's successor? Javi Gracia, late of Pontevedra, Cadiz, Villarreal B, Olympiacos Volou, Kerkyra, Almeria, Osasuna, Malaga and Rubin Kazan.

Watford will be his 10th club in less than 10 years. With such a keen sense of commitment, he should fit right in.

Disagree. This is results oriented thinking in action.

Sell your head coach right after appointing him and you send out a message that we're a easy pickings for any other club in the league. The club has set out its position clearly: no, you can't have our head coach (other clubs) and no, you can't sulk after not getting your way (our head coach). Those are two good positions to take.

Develop a reputation for being easy to push around and you'll be pushed around. Silva's disgusting lack of professionalism doesn't make that fact incorrect.

I'm shocked we put up with him for so long under those circumstances.

Sacked Marco Silva ostracised players and annoyed Watford with his demands

To the outside world sacking your manager when you are tenth in the Premier League looks like a shock indicating a sudden panic or loss of nerve, but in reality Marco Silva’s dismissal by Watford has been coming for a long time.

The Portuguese head coach’s position at Vicarage Road has been weakening since he began to persistently agitate for a move to Everton in the final week of October, as The Times revealed last week, creating uncertainty in the dressing room leading to a dreadful haul of only 11 points from the past 45 available. Under Silva, owner Gino Pozzo concluded, Watford were sleepwalking towards relegation, with the club moving quickly to appoint former Malaga coach Javi Gracia as his replacement tonight.

Watford confirmed in a statement released this morning that “a significant deterioration in both focus and results” following Everton’s “unwarranted approach” was the reason for Silva’s sacking, although the decision was undoubtedly hastened by a growing fear of relegation. Following a dismal run of just one win in nine matches Southampton’s visit to Vicarage Road nine days ago was designated as a must-win game and Watford could only draw, albeit showing some spirit in coming from 2-0 down to equalise in the last minute courtesy of Abdoulaye Doucoure’s sleight of hand.

Highlights: Leicester City 2 Watford 0
Watford’s players were honest enough to admit their good fortune after the game, although by that stage the manager’s luck had run out. Silva was informed of the club’s decision in a meeting at the training ground today, but he had been a dead man walking for the previous seven days with Watford already exploring potential replacements in the build-up to Saturday’s defeat away to Leicester City.

Watford made little attempt to disguise their anger at Everton at the time or since, with their rival’s approach having a deleterious impact on two levels. The club’s relationship with Silva never recovered from the damaged sustained by his reaction to Everton’s interest as he agitated to leave, demanding meeting after meeting with the board to state his case.

More significantly Silva’s command of the dressing room also declined, with the players sensing his lack of commitment and some even seeking to follow him to Goodison Park, as The Times reported last week. Furthermore it has even been suggested that Silva wanted to take Andre Carrillo, the Peruvian winger on loan from Benfica, who he previously worked with at Sporting Lisbon, with him to Everton and that the pair had discussed such a scenario.

Watford felt that Silva’s diminished standing manifested itself in his players losing focus at crucial times — they have conceded more goals in the last 15 minutes of matches and dropped more points from winning positions than any other team in the Premier League — as well as magnifying existing flaws in his make-up. The 40-year-old’s use of substitutes was under the microscope due to his side’s habit of collapsing late in games, as was his handling of club-record signing Andre Gray, scrutiny which has increased further since the Everton affair.

Okaka featured in Silva’s final game as Watford manager but found himself frozen out for a long time under the head coachMARK THOMPSON/***** IMAGES
In addition Silva’s man management skills had been viewed as poor from the moment he joined the club due to his penchant for ostracising unwanted players such as Stefano Okaka, Étienne Capoue and Sebastian Pr*dl, and unfortunate habit of antagonising the hierarchy by repeatedly making the same demands and asking for transfer targets that were unattainable. He has barely shut up about Islam Slimani, for example, despite the club making it clear that Leicester’s valuation of £40 million was unrealistic and unaffordable. While this was the source of some irritation Watford still wanted Silva to see out the season, and it was his loss of the dressing room and the creeping fear of relegation that proved the final straw.

The Pozzo regime have a reputation as trigger-happy owners who are quick to dump their manager at the first sign of trouble, yet in Watford’s case at least such a caricature is not entirely accurate. While it seems curious that the club are looking for their fourth manager in little over three years despite successfully establishing themselves in the Premier League after promotion under Slavisa Jokanovic in 2015, there have been very different reasons for all of those departures, which have not prevented Watford kicking on each time.

Silva is the first manager to be dismissed during the season since Billy McKinlay’s extraordinary eight-day, two-match reign in 2014, which culminated in Jokanovic’s arrival at Vicarage Road. Watford wanted the Serb to stay after he guided them to promotion after less than a season in charge, but considered his wage demands to be exorbitant so turned to Quique Sánchez Flores for their first Premier League campaign for nine years. The Spaniard also enjoyed immediate success, but the club felt that he switched off completely after guiding them to the FA Cup semi-final and began to enjoy his social life in London too much for their liking, and opted for a parting of the ways at the end of the 2015-16 season.

Watford are convinced that their success in staying in the Premier League last season was achieved in spite of rather than because of Walter Mazzarri, who struggled to communicate with his players and never commanding the complete backing of the dressing. After reaching 37 points with a win over West Bromwich Albion on April 4 Watford’s results and performances declined spectacularly and they won just one of their final eight matches — losing the last six — so it was no surprise when the Italian was dismissed.

Watford are adamant that this season is different however, as despite somehow remaining in the top ten they are far from safe and their form is that of relegation certainties. Silva’s awful record against other relegation candidates was another important factor in the club’s loss of confidence in him, as Watford have lost to Crystal Palace, Huddersfield, Brighton and Swansea in the last six weeks, games which the Board are convinced they would have won last season.

Despite sacking Silva less than three months later and losing out on £15 million in compensation Watford have no regrets about rejecting Everton’s four offers on a point of principle, and because of the concern that changing managers after just nine matches would destabilise their season. The fact that their season has imploded anyway is being attributed to Silva’s handling of the situation, rather than their own decision-making.

Ironically the Silva debacle will strengthen Watford’s belief in their recruitment and technical model, on the grounds that if a manager can have his head turned after just nine matches in charge why would the club let him sign the players? While Gracia has been appointed on an 18-month contract his position is likely to be reviewed at the end of the season, like all his recent predecessors.

Did Wally have a break clause? I though he just had a standard 3 year deal. No matter. The technicalities aren’t really the issue. Nobody will agree with me but rightly or wrongly the club show little interest in building a long term managerial relationship. This has a negative impact on manager’s loyalty when they work here.

Has his written that damming article about Wolves yet - surely using one agent to basically buy a brand new team is against the spirit of the game?

No wonder they are miles clear at the top!

Yes, what evidence do we have that Everton is the ‘seventh’ team in the PL? Newcastle and West Ham fans may wish to take issue with that for starters.

It all feels very depressing. Something had to be done to stop the rot because we cannot afford to go down and I don't think we should be. There are at least 3 teams with less quality. I accept it's not all about quality, it's also about fight but we've shown we do have hunger to snatch wins and draws.

The defence has been a mess and we stopped working as a unit. Hopefully we also benefit from new manager bounce but I'd rather beat Stoke than Southampton

The irony of that odious fat turd Samuel complaining about us yet failing to acknowledge Silva would be replacing a manager at Everton sacked much much sooner than Silva.

They played pretty well yesterday defensively against Spurs - we might need a performance of the quality we showed early in the season. However - the new manager bounce and all that...

Blimey - the third post on what was a quick comment by me. Lloyd wrote that we were celebrating wildly. Perhaps one or two did seem to be. I think most of us here are very sorry things did not work out with Silva - we hoped for great things. When he totally switched off and looked like he was going to get us relegated we were pleased he was gone. I am. But the idea we were have almost street celebrations is wide of the mark. Most of us are nervous. The new guy does not come with fantastic credentials and I for one will now regard avoiding relegation by one place as we did last year a success. Earlier in the season I hoped for a lot more.

Yeah, cup has to be sacrificed or used as a full match training session for the new guy. Ignore the result but be in a good place for stoke.

Don't get me wrong - I largely agree with your viewpoint. The new guy seems solid and the Silva situation to an outsider did seem to be unfixable no matter how much I liked him as a manager. Hopefully it will work out. I just found some of the early joyous comments on Silva's exit a bit unnecessary that is all. And on the wider front I hope we can give this new guy 2/3 seasons to build something.

Ha! Silva is such a snake!!

No wonder Silva's language changed, suddenly keen to deal with the Carrillo situation at the end of the season.

I feel we have quite similar views - neither of us wanted Silva to go but eventually it became necessary. If we could have got a couple more wins in the last few games then I think the Pozzos would have preferred to keep till the end of the season. That would have been the time to see if the air could be cleared once and for all or whether it was right to replace. This appointment is high risk. I would love to see us pick up five or six points in the next few games and so take a degree of pressure off - and then start looking upwards again.
